GB U21s secure opening 2019 Sultan of Johor Cup victory

Great Britain’s U21 men began their title defence with a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in their opening 2019 Sultan of Johor Cup match thanks to decisive goals from Thomas Russell and James Oates.

Having taken gold at last year’s tournament, the team began the 2019 edition in fine form and looked threatening in attack throughout the opening quarter.

With three penalty corners going in their favour, Louis Beckert was kept busy in the New Zealand net as he denied Jon Bleby’s side on numerous occasions in the opening 15 minutes.

Though GB had the ball in the back of the net, it was to be ruled out, enabling New Zealand to quickly counter and fire just wide of the target in an action packed first quarter.

New Zealand earned their first penalty corner shortly after the restart with Oliver Payne’s left-handed stop preventing the team from taking the lead.

Great Britain replied well, enjoying plenty of possession in the opposition’s circle and asking more questions of Beckert, who did well to tip one effort over the crossbar just before half-time.

It didn’t take long for GB to get on the scoreboard after the break, Russell showing good composure to control and swiftly finish the ball after it had been whipped into his path from distance.

Russell nearly had another only two minutes later, however his attempt flew just wide of the target as the team looked to double the lead.

Successive penalty corners went in favour of GB, ‘keeper Taylor Craigie blocking the first before Ioan Wall’s second attempt from the set piece going just wide.

GB were able to get another on the board just before the full-time whistle as Oates finished well to put the game beyond doubt and secure a 2-0 victory after a commanding performance to begin the tournament in the perfect manner.

Their next game will see them face Japan at 9:10am BST on Sunday 13 October, a match you can live stream HERE.

New Zealand U21 fall to Great Britain in gutsy first match at Sultan of Johor Cup

The New Zealand U21 side have fallen 2-0 to Great Britain in their first match of the 2019 Sultan of Johor Cup. The two sides were tied at the half time break as the New Zealand side played some outstanding hockey and put the Great Britain team under immense pressure through the first two quarters. Great Britain came out strong in the second half and made the most of the opportunities they created to seal an important win for their campaign.

The New Zealand U21 side started their match against the defending champions Great Britain in a positive fashion, early on in the match Sean Findlay was finding some great space in the midfield and was creating havoc for the Great Britain defence. Midway through the first quarter, Findlay found an open Tim Neild in the circle, Olivier Payne was up to the challenge in goal for Great Britain as he shut down the attack with some aggressive goalkeeping. With minutes to go in the first quarter, Moss Jackson was left open in the circle and played a great unselfish ball to the far post, unfortunately for New Zealand, the diving Dylan Thomas couldn’t get the touch into the goal. At the end of the first quarter, the two sides couldn’t be separated in what was a highly entertaining contest.

New Zealand continued playing well in the second quarter earning a penalty corner in the opening minute of the spell, Benji Edwards stepped up for the drag flick, the Great Britain defence just managed to stop the high flick as the scores remained tied at 0-0. The New Zealand side was forced to absorb some significant pressure from the Great Britain team, despite being on attack for large portions of the second quarter the British side was struggling to create any significant chances. At the end of the first half, the match remained tied at nil-all.

Great Britain opened the scoring early in the second half when a crash ball couldn’t be controlled by the New Zealand team and Thomas Russell was able to put the ball through the New Zealand goalkeepers’ legs and into the goal. New Zealand then looked to hold better possession as the quarter wore on, despite some great sequences of play the kiwis were struggling to break through the British defence. Heading into the final quarter the New Zealand side found themselves trailing 1-0 and needing a big push in the final quarter to get themselves on the scoreboard.

Great Britain was reduced to ten men midway through the final quarter and New Zealand immediately went on the attack as they desperately searched for the equalizing goal. New Zealand then had several penalty corners, unfortunately for the New Zealand side, they were unable to crack the Great Britain defence. Just before the end of the match, the Great Britain team scored their second of the contest when James Oates drove along the baseline and threw the ball through the New Zealand goalkeepers legs.

The New Zealand team don’t have a lot of time to recover before they return to the turf on the 13th of October at 11 pm (NZT) where they will take on India.

Australia brace for hard time from Malaysia

AUSTRALIA had to work doubly hard to edge Japan 2-1 in hockey’s curtain raiser of the Sultan of Johor Cup at Taman Daya Stadium in Johor Baru yesterday.

Ehren Hazell was the saviour for the team from Down Under when he scored in the third and 33rd minutes. Japan replied through Takuma Niwa (15th).

In other matches, India defeated Malaysia 4-2 while Britain beat New Zealand 2-0, with goals from Thomas Russell (34th) and James Oates (58th).

Australia coach Ben Bishop said he had expected a hard time from Japan.

‘Last year we faced the same predicament in our first match against Japan (which Australia won 2-1).

‘So this year we came onto the pitch expecting another tough fight, and Japan gave my players exactly that.’

Bishop feels that Australia need to improve their penalty corner battery when they face Malaysia today.

‘We had a handful of penalty corners but failed to score any,’ he said.

‘We need to improve on this aspect because I expect another tough fight from Malaysia.

‘Malaysian players are fast and skilful, so we need to be ready for everything.’

King lifts hockey team’s spirits ahead of clash with Britain

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah wants the national hockey team to forget about the past and think of the future.

Malaysia have failed to qualify for the last four Olympics and the focus will be on the side coached by Roelant Oltmans to overcome the past failures and reach the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Malaysia will play two playoff matches against Britain on Nov 2 and 3 at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in London to win a slot for the Olympics.

Malaysia are ranked 11th in the world and the last time they featured in the Olympics was in Sydney in 2000.

Al-Sultan Abdullah said all Malaysians want to see the national team defy the odds against world No. 7 Britain to win a place in the Olympics.

“I pray victory will favour the Malaysian Tigers. I hope all players will continue to give their best.

“Make sure that you are all super fit... eat sufficiently. Insya Allah (God willing) after departing (for London), you will all play to your best form for the country.

“Play for the whole rakyat (nation) of Malaysia and not forgetting the King and Queen of Malaysia, ” said Al-Sultan Abdullah at a hi-tea hosted by him and the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah for the national hockey squad at Istana Negara.

The royal couple were met by Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal.

Al-Sultan Abdullah, who was the MHC president from 2008 to 2015, also plans to invite other national athletes to attend similar programmes during his reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“I am looking forward to today’s event... to invite athletes or national players. Not just the hockey team. But today is rather special. Just to let you know you are the first team to come to Istana Negara to have tea with me, ” he said.

The Malaysian team will depart for Amsterdam on Oct 25 to get used to the chilly conditions in Europe and they will also play two matches against club sides before taking on Britain in the playoff matches.

Salima Tete, Sharmila Devi get Olympic Qualifiers camp call-up

Two back-to-back games against USA will be played in Bhubaneswar in November with the winner on aggregate booking a ticket for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Indian women’s hockey team would kick-off the final phase of its preparation for the Olympic Qualifiers at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar with the coaching camp beginning Monday.

The two back-to-back games against USA would be played at the same venue on November 1 and 2 with the winner on aggregate booking a ticket for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Hockey India on Saturday named a 22-member squad for the camp, which would be pruned to 16.

While most of the senior team members figure in the list, the selectors have also called up youngsters including Salima Tete, Sharmila Devi and Jyoti for the camp.

Incidentally, this would be the first time the team would be playing in Bhubaneswar, which has seen several major men’s tournaments in recent years. It would also be the first home game for the side after two years, the last time being a five match test series against Belarus in March 2017. The last competitive outing for the side at home, though, was the SAF Games in 2016.

“There is a lot of excitement among players to compete in Bhubaneswar. It is important for the team to get used to the pitch and we are also looking at playing practice matches amongst ourselves which we have requested should be open for public to come and watch. It will not only boost our confidence but it will also help us prepare better,” coach Sjoerd Marijne said.

India had recently toured England for a five match series against the reigning Olympic champion – although details about the first two games of the tour are sketchy – winning and losing one game each while drawing the remaining three.

The squad: Savita, Rajini Etimarpu, Deep Grace Ekka, Reena Khokhar, Salima Tete, Gurjit Kaur, Udita, Nikki Pradhan, Nisha, Sushila Chanu, Monika, Lilima Minz, Neha Goyal, Namita Toppo, Sonika, Rani, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami, Navjot Kaur, Sharmila Devi, Jyoti, Vandana Katariya.

Nance: We’re stoked to be sitting on top

It would be wrong to describe them as the early season surprise packets, but Adelaide Fire’s Women’s Team has taken all before them in the opening fortnight.

We caught up with former Hockeyroo and Adelaide Fire midfielder Gabi Nance about the team’s early surge and the excitement building ahead their first home game of the season this Sunday against Brisbane Blaze in what has been tagged the ‘inferno’ rivalry.

Hi Gabi. Thanks for taking some time out ahead of your big game against Brisbane Blaze on Sunday. After playing two away games, you’re at home for the first time this weekend. What’s the buzz been like at training this week?

GN: “I think the trainings we’ve had this week have been really relaxed. We’re heading into our first home game with 10 points on the board, so that already makes us feel good for Sunday. But the buzz around Hockey SA has been great and I think the girls are very keen and even a little disappointed we have to wait until Sunday.

You obviously would have had lofty expectations at the start of the season, but did you envisage you would be sitting on top after two rounds?

GN: “Honestly we weren’t really sure how we were going to go. All of the teams are super strong and each week it changes, so it was hard to know what to expect. As we went through preparing for the season, I was pretty confident we were going to do well, so I’m stoked to be sitting on top.”

The Adelaide Fire girls have been playing some great hockey. To beat the Tassie Tigers 4-0 down there last weekend is one thing, but all the girls look like they’re really enjoying their hockey and it’s showing on the pitch. How have you seen it?

GN: “South Australian hockey has always shown a very team-based brand of hockey, and I think we’ve carried that into the new league. Everyone is really excited and up and about and it’s so nice to see so many girls from so many different local clubs come together and put the performance out on the park each week.”

What has it been like for you to play in the first two rounds of the Sultana Bran Hockey One League and what have been your impressions so far?

GN: “I absolutely love it, particularly travelling to different states and seeing the hype around it all. I’m really impressed with how Hockey One has been run so far. I think the next five years are going to be so crucial and that we’ve already made leaps and bounds for hockey. It’s really exciting.”

Both Adelaide Fire and Brisbane Blaze have players missing this weekend due to Hockeyroos commitments. What are you expecting from Brisbane this week?

GN: “Every round is dangerous, and I think with the potential extra point if you do score a field goal, no lead is safe. Brisbane, or Queensland, have historically been a really strong side and we’re looking forward to the challenge. I think we’re just going to focus on ourselves and try to get another five points on the board.”

With the rule change which sees teams receive an extra one on one shootout opportunity from a field goal, has that changed the way you train or try to score?

GN: “I think that we’ve had a few shootout goals now, and we’ve missed a couple, so we’ve started to incorporate more one-on-ones under fatigue at training. I think having the opportunity to score a field goal off a short corner, so bringing it outside the five is something we’ve been working on. Having that extra shootout and having it across the board so everyone can do it in the team is a good challenge for us. Not everyone loves the one-on-one but everyone has been stepping up, so it has been good.”

What would you say to the local community in Adelaide, both hockey lovers and general sport fans, to encourage them to come out and get behind you, especially with your success so far?

GN: “I think for all the fans of the Adelaide Fire, both men and women, it’s a great opportunity to showcase hockey at its highest level in Australia. Hockey SA have always put on a really good match day experience and the vibe there has always been great, so I would encourage everyone to come down and watch the men and women. There are other great things too, not just the two games being played. We have the Heineken Hill, so you can grab a couple of beers and that’s always an incentive to watch a bit of hockey!”

This weekend could almost be dubbed the ‘Inferno Rivalry’, with the Fire taking on the Blaze. Are you ready for the heat?

GN: “I think it’s whoever is coming in more hot (laughs)! We have a media commitment tomorrow morning at the fire station, so we’re taking this very seriously.”

Without getting ahead of yourself, if you win on Sunday, are you confident that you can continue to ride the wave and secure a spot in the top four?

GN: “It’s hard to not get ahead of yourself week to week, but if we get a win this weekend, it’s just building our confidence and brand of hockey. I think we have every chance of being in the finals, we just have to keep putting a good performance out each week on the park and training hard.”

NSW Pride Take King of Jungle Title in First Ever Hockey One Cat Fight

Thanks to massive individual goal hauls by Blake Govers and Abby Wilson, the NSW Pride took all the points in their round three Sultana Bran Hockey clash with the Tassie Tigers at Sydney Olympic Park yesterday.

In the first game of the day, the NSW Pride men came up against a very physical and composed Tassie Tigers team lead by Kookaburra’s captain Eddie Ockenden. In their most challenging game of the competition so far, the NSW Pride had to battle some tough, wet conditions for their 4-2 win.

NSW took the lead early in the first quarter thanks to a clinical Blake Govers drag-flick, before a flurry of goals from the Tigers put them ahead heading into the first break.

Govers put the Pride back in the driver’s seat during the second term with two goals right before the main break. He was unlucky not to put them further ahead, after a field goal conversion attempt rebounded off the right upright with one minute to go in the half.

Just three minutes into the third quarter, Govers netted his fourth goal of the game. A stellar goal-keeping display from Grant Woodcock denied the Pride a bigger lead and kept the score line within reach of the Tigers at the final break.

A commanding midfield effort led by Flynn Ogilvie and Kurt Lovett in the final term kept the Tigers firmly pinned in their defensive half until the final two minutes of the game where they unable to capitalise on multiple short corner attempts in the dying minutes.

The win sees the NSW Pride men extend their lead at the top of the Sultana Bran Hockey One League ladder and puts them in a prime position to nab a home semi-final next month.

In the second game of the day, the NSW Pride women registered their first win of the competition with a dominant 5-0 performance over an inexperienced Tassie Tigers team.

Abigail Wilson opened the scoring for the NSW Pride early in match with a darting backstick goal. She then doubled the lead with a successful field goal conversion attempt with an almost identical shot.

She then extended the Pride’s lead shortly before half-time when she slotted a short-corner home. Debutant NSW Pride goal-keeper Jess Parr made some crucial saves during the third term to keep the Tassie Tigers scoreless heading into the last 15 minutes.

After a scrappy final quarter, Wilson put the result beyond doubt late in the final term when she got on the end of some great build up play by her team-mates in the dying minutes. She became the equal highest goal-scorer of the tournament after beating the Tassie goal-keeper to convert her field goal.

The NSW Pride return to Sydney Olympic Park against Hockey Club Melbourne for their final home game of the season next Sunday in a must-win clash for both teams.

The Michigan Wolverines field hockey team snapped Ohio State’s two-game winning streak in Friday’s 2-1 overtime win at Buckeye Varsity Field.

No. 11 Michigan (9-3, 3-1 Big Ten) bested No. 18 Ohio State (6-5, 1-3) in three major categories. The Wolverines had 24 shots, 15 on goal, while the Buckeyes managed just four shots and three on goal. Michigan also had 10 penalty corners to Ohio State’s two.

Michigan’s game winner came off a nicely placed through-ball by sophomore midfielder Sofia Southam that senior midfielder Meg Dowthwaite was able to chip into the corner. It was Dowthwaite’s sixth goal of the year, tied for the Wolverine-best. The goal came in sudden death overtime, and the Michigan players ran onto the field to celebrate together with Dowthwaite and Southam.

The Buckeyes played a player down through parts of the game, as they got penalized with yellow cards three times, twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth. Michigan didn’t have any yellow cards called against them.

“They worked hard today,” Ohio State head coach Jarred Martin said. “I think our ability to fight and sustain, despite being a player, or players, down for a majority of time was great.”

Ohio State sophomore goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez was a major reason that the Buckeyes kept the Wolverines scoreless into the fourth quarter. She had a season-high 13 saves in total, including multiple diving efforts. Hernandez, who was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the season, has 48 saves and a 74 percent save percentage on the season.

The first goal of the game came in the 50th minute off of a Michigan penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Emma Tamer put the ball past Hernandez to put Michigan up 1-0.

Ohio State freshman midfielder Mackenzie Allessie responded almost immediately with an unassisted strike from close range. The goal is Allessie’s 12th of the year, and her sixth game in the past seven with at least one goal.

Despite the loss, Hernandez and the Buckeyes allowed just one Michigan goal on its 10 penalty corner attempts.

“I want my calls to sound confident, like reading who’s at the top of the circle. Saying with confidence, ‘Alright, we’re going to do this guys’. And then going out with confidence,” Hernandez said.

Ohio State falls to 24-44-3 all time versus Michigan. Ohio State hasn’t beaten Michigan in field hockey since the 2011 season, though the Buckeyes have played close games and forced overtime in each of Martin’s three years as head coach.

Ohio State has a quick turnaround before its next game on Sunday, hosting the No. 16 Stanford Cardinals at 3 p.m.
