Seasoned goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made a comeback while former skipper Sardar Singh was dropped from the 18-member Indian hockey squad led by Manpreet Singh for the upcoming 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

The Indian team is in Pool B along with Pakistan, Malaysia, Wales, England and will begin their campaign on 7 April against Pakistan.

While Manpreet dons the captain's armband, the responsibilities of his deputy will be shouldered by Chinglensana Singh Kangujam.

It was under Manpreet's leadership the Indian team lifted the coveted Asia Cup 2017 followed by a bronze medal feat at the Men's Hockey World League Final in Bhubaneswar, last year.

Veteran custodian Sreejesh is back after having suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury during the Azlan Shah tournament in 2017. His brilliant show during the New Zealand tour saw him get his rightful place back.

He will be backed by the 22-year-old talent Suraj Karkera who played a crucial part in the team's good show in Bhubaneswar last year in his senior counterpart's absence.

Sardar's exclusion was on expected lines as he performed below-par at this year's Azlan Shah tournament. However, a few eyebrows were raised with Ramandeep Singh being dropped despite his decent show in the same tournament.

Youngsters Dilpreet Singh and Vivek Sagar Prasad, who made their international debut during the New Zealand tour have been rewarded with this opportunity for their good show. Both the players scored in important games.

Freeman and drag-flick expert Rupinder Pal Singh will form India's wall of defence along with Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh, Gurinder Singh and Amit Rohidas.

India's midfield will see skipper Manpreet Singh in the lead role, ably supported by the experience of Chinglensana along with young blood in Sumit and Vivek.

The Indian attack will feature a lethal combination between experience and youth as SV Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh and Dilpreet Singh are all in the team.

"This squad has been picked keeping in mind the performance in the previous tournaments since the Asia Cup 2017. We have tried out different combinations in the past events and we believe this will be the most effective combination for the Gold Coast 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games," said chief coach Sjoerd Marijne.

He further stated that the team has a winning mindset and will look to aim for the best in the quadrennial event.

"This team has been improving with every match and while we could not produce a podium finish at the 27th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2018, it will have no influence on how we are going to play in Australia and we will be going there with a mindset to win," said the 43-year-old Dutch Coach.

In the previous two outings at the Commonwealth Games, India has finished second behind Australia. Skipper Manpreet Singh, however, is confident of turning the tables this time.

"Our first aim is to do well in the group stage because we have some strong teams in our Pool. It's extremely crucial to top our table and make the semi-final but if we do meet Australia in the knockouts, I believe we will be up for a strong challenge," said the 25-year-old Manpreet.

Squad: PR Sreejesh, Suraj Karkera (goalkeepers); Rupinder Pal Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh, Gurinder Singh, Amit Rohidas (defenders); Manpreet Singh (C), Chinglensana Singh (vice-captain), Sumit, Vivek Sagar Prasad; Forwards: Akashdeep Singh, SV Sunil, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Dilpreet Singh (midfielders).

Sardar Singh dropped, Manpreet to lead India in CWG 2018

After leading the Indian men's hockey team at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, veteran midfielder Sardar Singh has been dropped from the 18-member squad for the prestigious Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, which is slated to begin on April 4.

Sardar's exclusion seems to have come in the wake of his below-par performance at this year's Azlan Shah tournament. He has been an integral part of the Indian team for a major part of the last decade but has fallen out of favour over the past one year.

The Indian team is grouped in Pool B along with Pakistan, Malaysia, Wales, England and will begin their campaign on April 7 against Pakistan.

Midfielder Manpreet Singh has been named as the captain of the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games, while the responsibilities of vice-captain will be shouldered by Chinglensana Singh Kangujam.

Hockeyroos’ Commonwealth Games Team To Be Named On Friday

Ben Somerford

The 18-member Hockeyroos team which will aim for a fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal on the Gold Coast next month will be announced publicly on Friday.

Australia, currently ranked fifth in the world, will have plenty of tough opposition for the gold medal, with England (currently ranked second) including several members from the Rio Olympics gold medal winning side.

The Hockeyroos’ Olympics conquerors New Zealand (currently ranked fourth) will also be in contention, with Australia likely to want some revenge for their Rio quarter-final defeat.

India (ranked 10th), South Africa (14th) and Scotland (18th) are among the other contenders.

The Hockeyroos are grouped with New Zealand, Canada, Ghana and Scotland.

Australia enjoyed back-to-back series wins over Spain (11th) and China (eighth) in Perth earlier this year as lead-up to the games, ensuring selection will be tough for coach Paul Gaudoin and the national selectors.

More recently the squad has been in an intense block of training in Perth, playing a series of intra-squad matches.

Edwina Bone, Karri McMahon and Madison Fitzpatrick returned from injury in recent months and are in contention for the Games, along with Brooke Peris who injured her quad in the final Test match against Spain in January.

Georgia Wilson suffered an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament injury in training prior to the Spain Test Series, while injuries have also forced Mariah Williams and Georgina Morgan out of selection contention.

Emily Smith, who was part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games team, appears set to lead the side on the Gold Coast.

Final teams have been increased from 16 players to 18 for the Commonwealth Games, meaning there will be two goalkeepers spots available for Rachael Lynch, Jocelyn Bartram and Ashlee Wells.

The Hockeyroos will travel to the Gold Coast on Wednesday 28 March.

Australia’s first match at the 2018 Commonwealth Games is against Canada on Thursday 5 April.

Knowles: Azlan Shah Was Perfect Comm Games Preparation

Ben Somerford

Kookaburras captain Mark Knowles says Australia’s Azlan Shah Cup triumph is the perfect preparation for next month’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The world number one Kookaburras won six games from six matches, including victories over England, Malaysia and India, who they’ll likely meet on the Gold Coast to secure their 10th Azlan Shah Cup title.

The triumph comes after last year’s Oceania Cup, International Festival of Hockey and World League Final victories, while they shared honours in the Test series against the Netherlands in Perth and Narrogin earlier this year.

Australia are aiming for sixth consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in men’s hockey, with the Azlan Shah Cup setting them up ideally.

“That’s why Australia loves this tournament,” Knowles said, who has announced he will retire after the Commonwealth Games.

“Every year we pencil this in as the start of our block. This year we have the Comm Games next month, the Champions Trophy and the World Cup.

“This is the start of an amazing year for these players. I don’t go all the way, but I’m still so motivated to win everything I play in.

“This is the absolute perfect start and four Tests against the Dutch in Australia.”

Knowles was named Player of the Match in the final but has no regrets about confirming his retirement already.

“To be able to finish with the Commonwealth Games is something that my family will be very proud of after all this time,” the 318-game veteran said.

Kookas midfielder Daniel Beale was named Player of the Tournament, while the side also won the Fair Play award.

Australia edged England 2-1 in the final and will likely meet the English again on the Gold Coast.

“They’re a huge rival of ours,” he said. “We knew it was going to be tough.

“We’ve been playing fairly consistent throughout the tournament.

“They came out really hard, they’re a good team, that’s why they’ve been at the top for so long.

“Corners played a part again, same as the World League Final. It’s important for us to keep moving forward.”

The Kookaburras’ 18-member team for the Commonwealth Games will be named on Friday.

RIVERSIDE Hockey Club played host to the first official bootcamp for the South African men’s hockey team ahead of the Commonwealth Games in April. Fans were able to rub shoulders with some of their heroes from the team who not only took part in the popular Durban Park Run but also help open training sessions at the local hockey club.

The team took part in a combination of fitness, skills and other important training drills at Riverside Sports who sponsored the team’s turf time at their world-class facility.

According to SA Men’s team hockey coach, Mark Hopkins, this is an exciting time for the team who are currently ranked 15th in the world but have high hopes of breaking into the top 10 world rankings.

“The bootcamp created the right environment for the players to be as successful as they can be. I believe the squad is gaining great momentum after winning the Africa Cup last October and we as a team have our sights set firmly on striving to not only be better players, but more importantly, role models for the young players in South Africa,” Hopkins said.

‘Glasgow set to host Pakistan-FIH Pro League next year’

Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI: The secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Shahbaz Ahmed on Monday said plans are afoot to launch Pakistan-FIH Hockey Pro League in Glasgow next year.

“Glasgow will become home to Pakistan hockey once the ball is set rolling,” he told Dawn. Shahbaz and PHF president retired Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar recently visited Glasgow and held discussions with the Scottish Hockey officials in this regard.

“We’ve discussed ways and means for the successful launch of the Pro-League and it will involve some $2,00,000,” he said.

According to the PHF secretary, Glasgow will serve as home ground for Pakistan for bilateral series against various hockey playing nations.

Meanwhile, Scottish Hockey has expressed its pleasure to announce that Pakistan men’s team will play their home matches of the FIH new game-changing Hockey Pro League at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

“The PHF was looking for a neutral venue with a track record of delivering world-class hockey events for their home matches, and found Glasgow as the ideal location. The Glasgow National Hockey Centre, a 2014 Commonwealth Games legacy venue, will now host Pakistan’s home matches in the FIH Hockey Pro League from 2019 until 2023,” the Scottish Hockey said in a statement.

The men’s FIH Hockey Pro League will feature Pakistan, England/Great Britain, Australia, India, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, and will run from January until June each year from 2019 for a minimum of four years. The competition is a new initiative where the world’s top teams play each other in a series of televised globally home and away matches, leading to Olympic and World Cup qualification.
