Match pages: Match 1 | Match 2

Summary: Meetings between India and Australia are seldom short of entertainment, something which is unlikely to change when these two giants of the game go head-to-head at the Kalinga Stadium. India have made an excellent start to their debut FIH Hockey Pro League season, currently sitting third with eight points. The team claimed five points from a possible six against the Netherlands before claiming another three in a stunning 2-1 victory over Belgium, the reigning World and European champions. The Red Lions bounced back with a 3-2 win in the second match, but few would dispute that India – coached by former Australian international Graham Reid and captained by newly crowned FIH Men’s Player of the Year Manpreet Singh – are playing some of their best and most consistent hockey in years.

Australia have an outstanding recent record against India, having won 22 of their last 30 meetings and not tasted defeat since a 2016 test match in Bendigo (AUS), when Raghunath Vokkaliga scored twice in a 3-2 win for the Indians. Australia - coached by Colin Batch, who was recently named 2019 Men's FIH Coach of the Year - also have an imperious record at the Kalinga Stadium, a venue where they have not suffered a defeat in regular time since a semi-final loss at the hands of Germany at the Hero Champions Trophy in 2014. The Australians were unbeaten in all six matches on the way to claiming the title at the 2017 Hockey World League Final, and won five out of six matches at the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018, with only the Netherlands getting the better of them in a semi-final shoot-out after regular time finished 2-2. As well as being extremely comfortable in their surroundings, their recent performances against Great Britain – where they claimed five points from six, recovering from a difficult opening weekend against Belgium in which they earned just one point from their two matches – ensures that the Kookaburras will be in confident mood coming into these fixtures.

Rise USWNT Sweeps Series with Canada

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - On the final day of competition between the U.S. Rise Women's National Team and Canada's U-18 team, USA swept their opponents with another two wins, while scoring an impressive 15 goals and conceding zero, at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The first match started with a relatively even first half that was characterized by some staunch Rise USWNT penalty corner defense to keep Canada at bay and a pair of well executed penalty corner routines at the other end to get the red, white and blue on the board. Claudia Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) opened the scoring with a sweep from the top of the circle in the third minute and then Courtney Kenah (Telford, Pa.) deflected in a well delivered ball from Abigail Tamer (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) two minutes later. Annika Herbine (Macungie, Pa.) got in on the action just before the end of the first quarter when Alexandra Morgan (Winnetka, Ill.) found her on the far post to round out a back-to-front series of passes. Another goal was added before halftime after an eerily similar passage of play and a nice line break from Josephine Palde (Schwenksville, Pa.) who found herself in space and 1-on-1 with the Canada goalkeeper and took her chance well.

USA would go on to add two more goals early in the second half through Grace Norair (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Reagan Cornelius (New Albany, Ohio). Norair finished off a baseline attack by Herbine just after the break and then Cornelius found the bottom corner after picking up the pieces as the ball broke loose in the circle. The final score stood 6-0 to USA.

“Throughout the game we focused on reshaping which created depth and width," said Palde. "This then opened up space for our center midfielders to pop into the empty pockets, for our outside midfielders to stretch the sidelines and our forwards to be high and on the baseline. We established a passing flow and that resulted in goal scoring opportunities."

“We really came together and figured out some of the little things we had been working on all weekend," commented Tamer. "Using quick transitions and changing our point of attack, we were able to capitalize on our chances."

In match two, three goals in a 4-minute span to start the second quarter got USA going with what proved to be a decisive lead. Lauren Wadas (Annville, Pa.) fired home a rocket from the top of the circle for her first of the afternoon after she won the ball on the press. Two-minutes later Alexandra Wesneski (Forty Fort, Pa.) opened her account as she put the finishing touches on a quick strike counterattack that was started by Kelly Smith (Downingtown, Pa.) deep in USA territory. Wadas then found the target for the second time after some good two-touch possession from USA.

Canada stood firm until the end of the third quarter when Wesneski was awarded a penalty stroke after a robust tackle and she duly obliged and converted. With a 4-0 lead heading into the final quarter, USA added another five before the final whistle. First, Mia Leonhardt (Media, Pa.) used her body well to protect the ball before finding the backboard with a quick shot and then Hope Rose (Dauphin, Pa.) added two in quick succession. Rose’s first came after a sublime deceptive pass from back-to-front from Erin Reilly (Saline, Mich.), the second through the speed of Caroline Nemec (Darien, Conn.) down the right baseline. Next, Wesneski completed her hat trick with a direct hit from a penalty corner before Elizabeth Yeager (Rye, N.Y.) added the final goal with a backhand strike from 12-yards out to make the final 9-0.

“We developed a lot from the first game to the last," added Wesneski. "We started slow but we picked up the tempo and started to create chances. We had a really good connection with each other throughout."

This coming weekend, the U.S. U-16 and U-21 Women's National Teams will meet their counterparts for three games each taking place on Friday, February 21, Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23 at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

Eugene Magee retires as one of Irish hockey’s best ever

Ireland’s most capped male player Eugene Magee has formally retired from international hockey after 15 years and 295 caps at the top of the game, playing at the 2016 Olympic Games and winning European bronze in 2015.

It brings down the curtain on one of the finest careers in Irish hockey with many hailing Magee as the greatest player of the modern era.

The Banbridge man had previously indicated he would retire at the end of the 2020 Olympic cycle, something which came to pass last October in cruel fashion in Vancouver.

His last international touch was a delicious shoot-out dummy that put Ireland 4-3 ahead of Canada but the side could not see out the victory that would have brought a ticket to Tokyo.

Those skills were indicative of what he brought to the game, a unique skillset with a heavy hurling influence from his days with the Down minors combined with a rock-hard will, always eyeing a direct line to goal.

Magee rubber-stamped his decision to step back on Monday evening with interim head coach Mark Tumilty – who worked extensively with Magee at Bann – leading the tributes.

“He has been a fantastic servant to Irish Hockey and played a key role in the success of the team over the last decade. Eugene will rightly be regarded as one of the best to have worn the green shirt.”

For Magee, himself, he added: “I have enjoyed 15 years as part of the Irish men’s hockey team and it has been my privilege to represent my country among so many talented players.

“To be able to play hockey with your friends is one thing but to compete on an international scale takes a huge amount of work from a lot of people and to them I am truly grateful.

“International hockey has been a huge part of my life and although it will feel strange to retire, I feel very privileged to have gained all the experiences I have had and to have played my part for the team.”

German double in the Euro Indoor Cups

The EuroHockey Indoor Club Cups both were won by German clubs as Club an der Alster and Düsseldorfer HC landed the titles last weekend.

For Alster, they were in danger in their group but eventually ran up a 10-8 win over Belgium’s White Star to reach the semi-finals after an earlier 5-4 loss to Austria’s SV Arminen.

They added a 6-5 semi-final win over Polish hosts WKS Grunwald Poznan to reach a final rematch with Arminen in which they nailed three penalty corners via Niklas Bruns, Anton Boeckel and Patrick Schmidt for a 3-0 lead.

Arminen pulled one back from Alexander Bele but Alster held on for a 3-1 win the European title for the first time since 2012 and their third time in total.

For Düsseldorf, they won five out of five matches in the Hague, culminating in their final win over hdm.

Sabine Markert opened the scoring from a corner in the opening minutes but the Dutch side fought back to lead 2-1 in the third quarter thanks to Tessa Clasener and Pien van Nes.

But the German club finished well with three goals in the last 11 minutes with Luisa Steindor making it all square at 2-2 going into the fourth quarter. Markert and Sara Strauss netted to close out the win.

No room for error for TNB Cup semi-finalists

By Jugjet Singh

Charity Shield and Malaysia Hockey League champions Universiti Kuala Lumpur are favourites to lift the TNB Cup this season.

ONLY one shot — that’s all the four TNB Cup semi-finalists will get today at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

After decades of hosting two-leg quarter-finals or semi-finals, this year’s edition will see teams which fall into slumber mode, even momentarily, being ejected from the competition.

Charity Shield and Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) champions Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) are the overwhelming favourites against Maybank, while the other semi-final between Tenaga Nasional and Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) might need a shootout to decide the winners.

In the MHL, UniKL recorded 4-2 and 4-0 wins over Maybank while Tenaga defeated THT 4-2 in the first round but lost 1-0 to the Terengganu side in the second.

UniKL chief executive officer and hockey club president Prof Datuk Dr Mazliham Su’ud is looking forward to a treble finish.

“As champions, we must play like champions. UniKL’s target this season is to win all three trophies,” he said.

“We have come this far in realising our dream, and UniKL’s unblemished record in the league speaks volume of our strength, commitment and more importantly the professionalism in the team.

“While I congratulate the players for their effort in winning the Charity Shield and league, my biggest fear is complacency setting in. Our mission is not completed as we need to advance to the TNB Cup final and win it as well.”

UniKL coach Arul Selvaraj said: “We need to be focused and also enjoy the game with a deep sense of commitment.”

Yesterday, the UniKL management honoured their players with awards.

Midfielder Baljit Singh Charun received the most consistent player award. Other players honoured were Faid Farhadh Shah (most improved player), Farhan Zain (most supportive player); Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil (most courageous player) and Izwan Firdaus Tajuddin (most memorable goal).

TODAY: S-Finals — Men: Tenaga Nasional v THT (4pm, Pitch I), UniKL v Maybank (6pm, Pitch I).

Women: Terengganu Ladies v PKS UniTen (4pm, Pitch II), HockAdemy v Police Blue Warriors (6pm, Pitch II).

Don’t let your guard down, UniKL players told

By K. RAJAN

PETALING JAYA: Their aura of invincibility has been erased. And Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) now know they cannot let their guard down.

A 1-1 draw with Tenaga in the final Malaysia Hockey League match marred the runaway leaders’ perfect record and UniKL president and CEO Datuk Dr Mazliham Mohd Su’ud has told his players not to be complacent when they take on Maybank in the semi-final of the TNB Cup at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

UniKL, who started the season with the Charity Shield win over Terengganu last month, were crowned champions last week and are expected to swat aside Maybank whom they had beaten 4-2 and 4-0 in the league’s home and away matches.

“As champions, we must play like champions. UniKL’s target this season is to win all three trophies. We have come this far in realising our dream. UniKL’s unblemished record in the League speaks volumes of our strength, commitment and more importantly the professionalism in the team, ” Mazliham told a press conference after a victory luncheon.

“While I congratulate the players for their effort in winning the league, my biggest fear is complacency. We won the Charity Shield and the League title. The show must go on and there must be no room for complacency. Our mission is not over and I would like to see the players move a level up and reach the final of the TNB Cup and win it.”

Mazliham also praised the forward Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil who underwent surgery for a fractured jaw but bounced back just three weeks later to steer the team to the title.

“He approached us and said he wanted to play. We were worried about his injury but, after consulting the specialist who treated him, we allowed him to play... he has shown great character on his return and has scored seven goals.”

Meanwhile, UniKL coach Arul Selvaraj (pic) warned his players to not take Maybank lightly.

“It is all right to sit back and enjoy this moment and the players deserve it but our mission is just 50% completed. We have a lot of work to do still and it is not over yet, ” he said.

“But you must stay focused and enjoy your game with a deep sense of commitment... remember our mission is to win the TNB Cup now and we have to go in and complete that job.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Siti Asma’a Ahmad Kamil is eager to stand between the posts in the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Guzal Bakhavaddin of Kazakhstan when Terengganu Ladies Hockey Team (TLHT) take on PKS Uniten in the semi-finals of the Vivian May Soars Cup tomorrow.

Guzal, who helped TLHT finish second in the Malaysia Women’s Hockey League (MWHL), has returned to Kazakhstan for a national team trial.

TLHT lost the league crown to newcomers HockAdemy by two points.

Last year, TLHT won the league title and were joint champions with China’s Liaoning Infinite Space HC in the Vivian May Soars Cup.

Siti Asma’a, 22, said Guzal absence is a loss but vowed to give her best in the semi-finals today.

“Guzal will be missed but we don’t want it to be an excuse when we face Uniten tomorrow,” said Siti Asma’a.

“We must try to defend our Cup after losing the league crown.”

Guzal said: “I have no choice but to return and join my national team. If I get an opportunity, I will definitely return next year.”

HockAdemy can continue despite controversy

By K.M. Boopathy

HOCKADEMY will be allowed to play in the Vivian May Soars Cup semi-finals today despite the controversy surrounding their eligibility.

Terengganu Ladies Hockey Team (TLHT) sent a letter of protest on Monday claiming that HockAdemy, formed less than six months ago, were not affiliated with the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Association (KLHA) and thus should not have been allowed to play in the Malaysia Women’s Hockey League (MWHL).

The newly-formed KL-based club won the MWHL crown recently.

Upon receiving the protest letter, Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) chief executive officer Norfaraha Hashim wrote to KLHA president Datuk Seri Megat Shahriman Zaharudin on the same day seeking a written explanation and to provide the necessary documents.

Megat, in his written explanation, replied that HockAdemy had applied via email to become a KLHA affiliate on Jan 3.

“The application was approved in principle. However, KLHA have not had their supreme council meeting to endorse the application due to shortage of time and lack of quorum,” said Megat.

According to the KLHA constitution, any affiliation must be approved in a KLHA supreme council meeting.

Megat also submitted HockAdemy’s affiliation fee receipt and recommendation letter from the Malaysia College Old Boys Association,

Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) competitions committee chairman Datuk Anil Jeet Singh said the matter will be deliberated by MHC’s technical committee today.

“MHC have received a reply together with the supporting documents from Megat. MHC will allow HockAdemy to play Police Blue Warriors tomorrow (today),” said Anil.

“Based on the letter, it indicates that Megat did not follow procedures. However, it is for the MHC technical committee to deliberate and make recommendations.

“MHC will take all aspects into consideration before making the final decision.”
