Junior hockey teams start campaign at Youth Olympic Qualifier with big wins
BANGKOK: The junior Indian men and women's hockey teams started their campaign at the Youth Olympic Qualifiers with emphatic wins on Wednesday.
The women's team blanked Singapore 14-0 while the men's side beat home team Thailand 25-0.
In their first Pool B match, the women's team opened their account in the second minute via a goal from Sangita Kumari. Three minutes later, Mumtaz doubled the lead with vice-captain Lalremsiami adding to the tally in the seventh minute.
Ishika Chaudhary and Sangita made it 5-0 at the end of the first period.
Singapore had no answers to the pace and skills showed by the Indian team in the second period. Deepika scored the sixth and seventh goal in space of two minutes. Sangita, Lalremsiami and Mumtaz came to the party scoring four more goals between them as at the end of second period India were leading 11-0.
There was no respite for Singapore in the final period as Lalremsiami and Sangita added three goals in the final period with the match ending at 14-0. Sangita ended with six goals (2', 8', 15', 17', 21', 28') to her name while Lalremisiami scored three (7', 17', 21').
Meanwhile, the junior men's team gave no home ground advantage to Thailand. Seven goals in first period and 10 in the second and eight in third left the Thailand team gasping for breath.
Mohammad Alishan (4', 10', 17', 20', 25', 29') with six goals and Rahul Kumar Rajbhar (2', 12', 18' 22', 23') with five did the bulk of scoring across three periods.
Rabichandra Moirangthem (10', 15', 20', 29') and skipper Vivek Sagar Prasad (7', 9', 27', 28') hit the back of the net four times each. Except for the goalkeeper every member of the squad was on scoring sheet at the end of the regulation time.
The junior men's team will take on Japan in their second pool game on Thursday while the women's team will take on Korea.
The five-day tournament is a qualifying event for Youth Olympic 2018 to be held at Buenos Aires, Argentina which will follow the futuristic Hockey 5's format.

Good start in Bangkok qualifier

KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's under-18 team started their Asian Youth Olympics Qualifier campaign with a bang when they whipped Hong Kong 10-1 at the Queen Sirikit Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
And the men also had a wonderful time, when they hammered Cambodia 23-0 in the hockey 5s tournament.
Only the men's and women's finalists will qualify for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aries on Oct 6-18.
Putri Nur Batrisyia (first, 23rd), Siti Zulaika Hussin (fourth, eighth, 18th), Nurmaizatul Hanim Syafi (fifth, 11th, 28th), and Siti Nur Arfah Nor (19th, 20th) scored for Malaysia.
Women's coach Yahya Atan said: "This big win is a good start for our campaign to try and qualify for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aries. The players adapted well to the 'new' concept of hockey 5s and I believe they will not disappoint in the next matches as well."
"I'm really proud of my players who not only claimed three points, but also won by a big margin. Tomorrow (today) we will play China and I believe it would be our toughest match in the tournament.
"We need to tighten our game against China, especially when under counter-attack after losing the ball in attack."

Our boys and girls get off to flying start in Asian Youth Olympic qualifiers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian boys’ and girls’ teams got off to a flying start in the Asian Youth Olympic hockey qualifiers in Bangkok.
The boys’ team thrashed hapless Cambodia 23-0 in a Group B match at the Queen Sirikit Stadium while the girls’ side crushed Hong Kong 10-1 in Group A.
Muhd Amirul Hamizan Azhar (7th, 26th, 27th, 27th, 28th, 29th) was the toast of the boys after scoring six goals against Cambodia.
Mohd Akhimullah Anuar Esook (9th, 10th, 13th, 23rd) netted four goals while Syarman Mat Tee scored a hattrick (12th, 20th, 24th). The other scorers were Muhd Noor Firdauz Rosdi (5th, 18th), Alfarico Lance Liau (6th, 24th), Mohd Kamaruzaman Kamarudin (10th, 25th), Muhd Arif Syafie Ishak (15th, 28th) and Muhd Muhibuddin Moharam (16th, 17th).
Team manager Megat Azrafiq Termizi said it was a good start but Cambodia were not much of a team.
“Our main challenge will be against Pakistan and Bangladesh as both these teams have featured in the Youth Olympic Games. There are a few things we need to improve, like our finishing,” said the former international.
Siti Zulaika Hussin (4th, 8th, 18th) and Nurmaizatul Hanim Syafi (5th, 11th, 28th) each scored a hattrick against Hong Kong.
Putri Nur Batrisyia Nornawawi (1st, 23rd) and Siti Nur Arfah Mohd Nor (19th, 20th) contributed the other goals for Malaysia.
Hong Kong’s consolation goal was scored by Aliya Khan in the 21st minute.
Malaysian girls’ coach Yahya Atan was satisfied with his team for playing to his instruction.
“My girls played well to collect full points and it was a morale boost for us as our next match is against favourites China tomorrow.
“My players need to play a defensive game against China as they play a fast attacking game. We also need to play a tight marking game and can’t afford to make mistakes,” said Yahya.

Rot-Weiss bounce back to move clear again in Germany

After last week’s games closed the gap to Rot-Weiss Koln at the top in Germany, the latest series of games saw the league stretch out once again with important wins over UHC Hamburg and Harvestehuder THC.
Against UHC, Mats Grambusch scored the last two goals of a 5-3 success to eventually kills off their regular rivals who had been on a good run of form.
A day later, Rot-Weiss beat HTHC 1-0 with Florian Adrians’ seventh minute goal the only strike of the game. His side hit the post from both a corner and a stroke but it was another very even game that Andre Henning’s side edged in the scoring stakes.
The result means they top the table by three points as Uhlenhorst Mulheim only got a draw against UHC Hamburg on Sunday. Lukas Windfeder and Timm Herzbruch put Mulheim in front two times but Leo Harms and Julius Schmid responded in kind both times for a 2-2 draw.
Uhlenhorst had beaten HTHC 6-4 on Saturday with Thilo Stralkowski scoring twice in a comeback from 4-2 down with a pair of strokes.
The results elsewhere saw Harvestehuder drop out of the top four and into fifth place with Mannheimer HC and Berliner HC in the playoff places.
Mannheim drew 2-2 with Club an der Alster with goals from Patrick Harris and Gonzalo Peillat coming in between two goals from Dieter-Enrique Linnekogel.
A day later, Mannheim won a crucial game at Berliner HC, Lucas Vila scoring the only goal in the 20th minute. Berlin had beaten TSV Mannheim a day earlier.
Next weekend sees sides from the top half face the bottom half. Rot-Weiss face sixth place Club an der Alster in the pick of the games; HTHC face Crefelder HC; Uhlenhorst Mulheim go to bottom placed Munchner SC and Mannheim host Dusseldorfer.

USMNT Kicks off Extensive Europe Training Tour
NEUSS, Germany – Following a successful training camp in Moorpark, Calif. earlier this month, the U.S. Men’s National Team continued their extensive regiment this week in the first of multiple camps in Europe for 2018.
The USMNT started the first training block on Monday, April 23 in Neuss, Germany with three training session as athletes got over jet lag and days of travel. The following two days, USA had more practice before scrimmaging a local club team as part of the team’s third overall training camp this year. After this block, USA will continue their European training camp tour in The Netherlands from April 30 to May 2. The team will then return state-side for another camp in Moorpark, Calif. to round out the month.
USA will then begin the summer months by returning to Europe to participate in two friendly matches in Lille, France on June 23 and 24. Next, they will travel to Madrid, Spain for a three-game friendly series July 3-6 against the host nation, who currently hold a FIH Hero World Ranking of 8.
Following Spain, the USMNT will head to Glasgow, Scotland to begin test series matches against No. 23 Scotland and No. 10 Ireland.

SA’s top hockey players gear up for 2018 Varsity Hockey season

Seven of SA’s Commonwealth Games men’s hockey team represented their universities in Varsity Hockey as the platform for talented hockey stars continues to grow. The 2018 and third season of men’s Varsity Hockey, kicks off on 4 May 2018 at Wits, as the UJ men look to make it three from three.
In 2014 UJ won the inaugural men’s tournament and defended it again in 2016. Maties have typically been strong contenders with the likes of Keenan Horne leading the charges up front. Wits and Tuks have made up the top four, with strong attacking line-ups.
Varsity Hockey has become a highlight on the local hockey calendar with a number of matches broadcast live on SuperSport, entertaining match day experiences and innovations such as the Power Play.
Unique rules
This season the Power Play returns as once in a match, each team may force their opponents to remove two players from the field for a duration of three minutes. During those three minutes no more than six opposition players are permitted to be in their 23-metre area and all goals will count two.
“I think the Varsity Hockey rule changes have certainly had a positive effect on the game,” said Gregg Clark, former South African national player and coach. “Both attacking and defending teams have had to put a lot of time and thought into how they are going to play their hockey…both in and out of the Power Plays.”
In addition, all field goals are worth two in every Varsity Hockey match, as Varsity Sports encourages and rewards an entertaining brand of hockey.
“We are excited to announce this Varsity Hockey rule change,” said Varsity Hockey Code Manager, Jana Arlow when the rule was introduced last year. “By awarding two goals to a team scoring a field goal, we hope to encourage an entertaining brand of hockey for spectators, while offering something unique for the players too.
“Matches will now also be contested right until the final whistle even if a team is two or three goals down.”
So look forward to matches going down to the wire, even when teams are trailing by two or three. Keep an eye and ear out for the intense two-minute Power Plays as teams defend with nine players while their opponents look to score double.
There are also no draws in Varsity Hockey, with drawn matches going straight to a shootout. It’s scintillating action from the first to the final whistle!

Young UJ squad face stiff Varsity Hockey challenge

As two-time defending champions, the University of Johannesburg men’s team know the pressure will be on them when they begin their campaign in the Varsity Hockey tournament next weekend.
UJ hockey manager Elize le Roux said they would not be getting ahead of themselves and would focus on each game as it happened.
After the women held centre stage in 2017, the men’s version of the competition will take place this year, beginning with a round of four matches at Wits in Johannesburg from May 4 to 7.
UJ have lost a number of experienced players, including Gareth Heyns, Brynn Cleak and Taylor Dart, from the winning team of 2016 and have entered a rebuilding phase.
Le Roux said several players had graduated or were past the eligible age of 25, but that the youngsters available added a fresh element to the squad.
“We are taking a new view into this tournament as we have a young team during this rebuilding period,” she said.
“Naturally, we would love to defend the title, but we are taking it game by game at this stage.”
As the title-holders, she added that there would always be pressure to perform, but they were trying keep the players focused on their plan rather than be influenced by any external expectations.
Under coach Garreth Ewing, the squad have been training for over two months in their preparations.
“Holidays and league fixtures have interrupted a couple of sessions, but we have also used league as part of our preparation,” said Le Roux.
“We have a mini camp planned this long weekend ahead of the competition next week.”
As usual in varsity events of this nature there are a number of innovations which will test the teams.
“I think the men like the format. It gives running hockey a chance to be seen and the men play a faster-paced game in general.
“The power play and the goals systems mean you face the challenge of managing each game in a different way, according to the opposition.”
The power-play rule can be taken by one side at any stage of the game.
The side choosing to initiate the power play force the opposition to remove two players from the field for a short period. Any goal scored during the power play counts for two goals.
Le Roux said their efforts would depend on the entire team, which included two talented goalkeepers in Matt Martins and Gary Cooper.
“Kyle Lion-Cachet, who is captain, and Courtney Halle are SA U21 players, while we will also draw from the talent and experience of Chad Burke and Dylan Swanepoel in our link line and SA U18 players Che February and Spencer Botes.”
The remaining universities in the competition are Wits, UCT, Stellenbosch, Nelson Mandela, North West, Pretoria and Free State.

Sardar likely to make a return

New Delhi: Disappointed with the performance of the team in the Commonwealth Games, Hockey India (HI) is likely to bring back veteran midfielder Sardar Singh in the national team.
Sources said that on Tuesday when HI sat down to review the performance of the team in CWG, it was felt the absence of some experienced players in the middle cost India dear in their medal-less campaign.
A veteran in the national team for the last 12 years, Sardar found himself out of a major tournament for the first time in his career when he was dropped from the squad for the Commonwealth Games. Interestingly, he led India in the Azlan Shah, which was played just before CWG.
Given the way things are shaping up, there is every possibility that Sardar could be back in the squad for the Champions Trophy and the Asian Games because of his immense experience in international arena.
It is for the first time since 2006 India finished without a hockey medal in CWG. It not only raised questions about the showings of the players but also opened the door for the review of the coach Sjoerd Marijne role.
"Some of the senior players like skipper Manpreet Singh, PR Sreejesh and Rupinder Pal Singh, met top HI officials and explained why India could not do well in CWG this time," said a source.
The players have believed to have requested HI to send the team for a tournament before the Asian Games.
There are a lot of speculations on the fate of the Dutch coach Marijne after the poor performance of the team in CWG. While India is known for sacking hockey coaches on a regular basis, Marijne's position becomes even more vulnerable since India would play Asian Games, Champions Trophy and World Cup this year.
"Hockey is a team game and the coach is also accountable for players' performances. It will be too early to comment anything but Sjoerd too will have to come up with answers for the poor show," an official said.
The coach, however, is currently not in India and would return before the national camp in Bangalore later this month.
Under the presence circumstances, it will not be easy to sack the coach since time is too short to find a replacement before India play three important tournaments in the next seven months.
Marijne was originally the Indian women's team coach but was shifted to the men's team in September last year after another Dutchman Roelant Oltmans was removed by HI. The appointment came as a surprise since Marijne was named the coach only a couple of days after HI invited applications for Oltmans' replacement.

MJHL: Thunderbolts miss each other

KUALA LUMPUR: All four Thunderbolts received a favourable draw in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian TNB Cup starting on May 2.
Anderson of Ipoh, Pahang Sports School (AHP-SSP), Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) and Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) play under the Thunderbolts banner and are sponsored by Tenaga Nasional.
The four will not meet each other in the quarter-finals, and it was a relief for Anderson team manager M. Kaliswaran after an open draw with the top-four seeded was conducted.
"At least we (Thunderbolts) passed the first hurdle and will not plat against each other in the last eight," said Kaliswaran whose side will play MBMB Warriors from Malacca.
Coincidentally, Anderson finished second in Division One, while MBMB Warriors second in Division Two.
"Yes, but that does not mean we will be playing against a weak side. I watched Malacca play in the Division Two final, and they have a very good side. I believe if we take them lightly, we will be in trouble," said Kaliswaran.
Division two champions from Penang, MSSPP-PSHA, were drawn to play Pahang's AHP-SSP-Thunderbolts.
All four Thunderbolts teams not only receive funding from Tenaga Nasional but also equipment as well as coaching expertise from former internationals who also played for Tenaga.
Defending champions SSTMI were drawn to play against PJCC Tigers, and even though the Tigers ended sixth in Division One and barely made the quarterfinals cut, they held the champions 0-0 in the League.

Penang side brace for tough challenge from Pahang team in MJHL quarters

KUALA LUMPUR: Division Two champions Penang State School Council (MSSPP)-Penang State Hockey Association (PSHA) face a tough draw in the knockout stage of the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).
The Islanders are drawn to meet last year’s losing finalist Pahang Hockey Academy (AHP)-SSJ-Thunderbolt in the quarter-finals at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 2.
The semi-final matches will be played on May 4 and the final is scheduled for May 6.
Penang coach Jiwa Mohan said the Pahang team are an experienced side with a good set of players who finished third in Division One.
“They featured in the final last year and will be going all out to achieve it again. As for us it will be a challenge to play the Pahang team.
“But nothing is impossible. My players are in high spirit and they too are hoping to create an upset to reach the semi-finals,” said the former international after the draw was held in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Division Two runners-up Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) Warriors too face a tough draw against Division One runners-up Anderson-Thunderbolt in the quarter-finals.
Defending overall champions Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI)-Thunderbolt have been drawn to face last year’s league champions Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Tigers in the quarter-finals.
Both the teams played to a 0-0 draw in the league match.
SSTMI coach Wan Roslan Wan Abdul Rahman said the pressure would be on his team to get the better of MBPJ team.
“MBPJ gave us a good fight in the league match and they were the only team that we did not score a goal against. It was the first time in nine matches we failed to collect full points.
“We can expect a torrid time against them in the quarter-finals as they want to end our unbeaten run in the league,” said Wan Roslan.
The fourth quarter-finals match is between former champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS)-Thunderbolt against SMK Datuk Bentara Luar-UniKL-PHJ.
SMK Bentara Luar finished fourth in Division One while BJSS a rung below.
BJSS will be eyeing to avenge their 3-2 defeat to SMK Bentara Luar in the quarter-finals.
The winner of the match will face SSTMI-Thunderbolt in the semi-finals.
