England will vye for their first men’s World Cup medal for 32 years with new coach Danny Kerry entering his second showpiece tournament in five months and the belief that his fresh-faced side can “threaten” the world’s best in India.

England sit seventh in the world rankings but will be aiming to make inroads on two fourth-place finishes at the last two World Cups.

Barry Middleton will once again travel for a major sub-continent tournament – this will be the 34-year-old’s fourth World Cup – and, along with Adam Dixon, will be two of the most experienced players overseeing 13 World Cup debutants.

Zach Wallace (18), Jack Waller (21), who made their international debuts 42 days ago, and travelling reserve Rhys Smith (21) are the youngest players to be selected after Kerry rubber stamped his side after key assessments in the last few weeks.

Notable omissions include Henry Weir, Ollie Willars and Chris Griffiths, while Sam Ward has overcome a minor injury.

“The athletes have been working hard and embracing new ideas over the last eight weeks in the build up to World Cup selection and we could not have asked more from the team in terms of attitude and application,” Kerry said.

“We understand the challenge our pool represents and will have to be at our very best to progress to the latter rounds of the tournament.

“We realise that many teams will start favourites ahead of us, we also know we are capable of threatening all teams.

England’s co-captains: Phil Roper, George Pinner and Ian Sloan

If odds were to be set as a pre-World Cup barometer, England would certainly be an outside bet after losing to France and finishing fourth at the recent 4 Nations in Valencia.

But the squad felt that there was reason for optimism after producing some incisive performances in Spain, notably against the Dutch.

In their World Cup Pool, England face Australia, gunning for their third title in a row, Ireland, who they lost to twice in Valencia, and China.

The 20-strong squad includes Smith and Brendan Creed as two travelling reserves. They will certainly be two key assets after the World League last year in Bhubaneswar when some teams were depleted through food poisoning.

England’s last World Cup medal came in 1986.

England squad:

George Pinner (Holcombe), Harry Gibson (Surbiton), Adam Dixon (Beeston), Liam Sanford (Reading), Mark Gleghorne (Beeston), Jack Waller (Wimbledon), Michael Hoare (Wimbledon), Luke Taylor (Surbiton), Harry Martin (Hampstead & Westminster), David Ames (Holcombe), Ian Sloan (Wimbledon), Barry Middleton (Holcombe), Zach Wallace (Surbiton), James Gall (Surbiton), Phil Roper (Wimbledon), David Condon (East Grinstead), Will Calnan (Hampstead & Westminster), Sam Ward (Old Georgians)

South Africa announce squad for World Cup

Courtesy of the South African Hockey Association

The South African Hockey Association has released the names of the 18 men who will go to the FIH Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar in India for the 14th edition of the premier International Field Hockey tournament for Men.

South Africa will head to the tournament for the 6th time looking to outdo their previous best of 10th place, achieved in both 2010 and 1994. To do that they will have to get out of a tough group featuring the hosts India, the world number 3 Belgium and world number 11 Canada. The new format of the World Cup means that one victory could secure you a third place spot in the group where a crossover match awaits ahead of potential quarter finals. South Africa will most definitely be inspired by the journeys of Ireland and Spain at the Women’s Hockey World Cup earlier this year, in looking to cause an upset that would really cause waves in India.

In goals South Africa will call on the experience of Rassie Pieterse and Gowan Jones for the battle for number 1. Both were in fact in the South African squad for the 2014 edition so neither should be overwhelmed by the opportunity. European based duo Rhett Halkett and Austin Smith, both centurions for South Africa will lead the defensive line alongside 2018 IPT Player of the Tournament Mo Mea, 2018 PHL Player of the Tournament Jethro Eustice and of course U21 IPT victorious skipper Tyson Dlungwana.

“It is critical that we continue to focus on developing our offensive and defensive strategies and execute our game plan consistently”
South Africa Coach Mark Hopkins

If fans are excited about the defensive combinations available there is no doubt they will be absolutely salivating at the thought of Nic Spooner donning the green and gold again. The previous Hockey India League player is a star in Germany and his star quality is there for all to see. He is joined by arguably South Africa’s most consistent performer over the past 12 months in Tommy Hammond, as well as a man playing his best hockey in the past few years in Taylor Dart. Keenan Horne has continually impressed for club and province and gets the nod as well as the exciting Northern Blues man Peabo Lembethe. Of course the midfield will be anchored as always by national captain Tim Drummond, a man who shows you how the game should be played both on and off the pitch.

Up front the goal scoring form of Richard Pautz has made him a name that can’t be left out and he is joined by veteran striker Julian Hykes, who appears to be getting younger rather than older in the past 6 months. Another centurion in the team is Taine Paton who also featured at Holland 2014, and then the line-up is complete by the two most exciting young talents in the country. Big game goal scorer Bili Ntuli and the sensational hands of Dayaan Cassiem.

Coach Mark Hopkins shared his thoughts on the squad:

“The entire squad has focused on building our brand and culture off the pitch and our style on the pitch. I am extremely excited by the squad that is going to represent South Africa at the FIH Hockey World Cup, and humbled by the work behind the scenes to ensure we are as well prepared as possible. We have selected a squad that is able to play a style of hockey that we will get the most out of our talents and also compete against some of the best in the World.

It is critical that we continue to focus on developing our offensive and defensive strategies and execute our game plan consistently. The squad will be led by Tim Drummond and I am sure everyone will get behind him to ensure we deliver our expectations.”

Argentina and Canada ready for Indian adventure

Bhubaneswar, India - November 28 to December 16

Sarah Juggins

2017 Pan American Cup - ARG v CAN

Both north and south of the Pan American Hockey Federation region are represented in India as the best teams in the world converge on the Indian city of Bhubaneswar for the 14th men’s World Cup.

Argentina and Canada will be playing for top honors at the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 alongside 14 other teams all hopeful of lifting the coveted trophy.

For both teams a win would be a historic first. Argentina has come closest, with a remarkable bronze medal in the 2014 World Cup. Prior to that result, Los Leones had been to every World Cup except the 1998 edition but the team’s best finish had been sixth place in 1986 and 2002.

Canada have enjoyed five previous world cup adventures. Their best performance came in 1998 when they finished eighth. Their last outing onto the world cup stage was in 2010 when they finished 11th.

One of the still-playing members of the 2010 squad is Canada’s captain and long-serving forward Scott Tupper. He says the present-day squad is in a very good place with just a few weeks to go before they head off to India. At the time of interviewing, Canada had just finished a four-match test series against the higher-ranked New Zealand side. Canada won the series comfortably with three wins and a draw.

“The series in New Zealand put us in a good position moving into the last phase of preparation,” says Tupper. “We learned what things were working well for us, and where we needed a little more focus over the last month or so. It also gave us a good opportunity to train for our penalty corners, both offence and defence, leading into the tournament.”

One of the strengths of the Canadian squad is the high level of experience they have within the squad. Of the players going to Bhubaneswar, 12 players have more than 100 caps. Aside from Tupper, who currently has 283 caps, midfielder Mark Pearson has 245 caps, Richard Hildreth is on 181, goalkeeper David Carter has 170 and Iain Smythe has 172. Many more players are in the 70-100 cap bracket. Tupper says this has led to a high level of confidence in each other and the knowledge that can only come from competing with each other at the toughest of tournaments.

At the other end of the scale, one of the youngest and newest recruits to the squad is Jamie Wallace. At 19, Wallace is the youngest player in the squad but has been part of the senior set up for more than a year. He has previous experience of playing elite level sport in the other version of the game – ice hockey.

Argentina also have some experienced heads in their side. At 39, Juan Vivaldi is one of the oldest players to compete at a World Cup. The goalkeeper’s 246 caps are eclipsed however by the cap collections of Pedro Ibarra (263), Juan Lopez (269), Lucas Rossi (206) and the unstoppable Matias Paredes, who currently has 336 caps to his credit. While Argentina’s squad had not been announced at time of writing, it is pretty certain that most if not all the old-timers will be making their presence felt in Bhubaneswar.

The team is led by 42-year-old German Orozco. He has big shoes to fill as his predecessor, Carlos Retegui, led Argentina to a first Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016 after masterminding Argentina’s resurgence following the 2012 London Olympic Games. Retegui’s place in the annals of coaching history was assured in 2014 when he led both the men’s and women’s teams to bronze at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup. The result was particularly pleasing for Los Leones as they had entered the competition ranked 11th in the world.

But Orozco is not a man to be phased by the reputations of others. He has his own strong hockey portfolio. Not only did he play for Argentina in two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004), but he also enjoyed a successful career playing club hockey in Europe, notably in Hamburg, Germany and for Orange Zwart in the Netherlands.

A fourth-place finish at the Rabobank Hockey Champions Trophy in Breda perhaps wasn’t the result Los Leones were looking for in Orozco’s first foray into top-flight hockey. Most concerning were the losses to both India and Pakistan, suggesting that Argentina hadn’t come to terms with the Asian playing style.

In an interview with hockey.nl leading up to the Champions Trophy, Orozco said he was focusing on the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, and in particular, molding together his core of experienced players and the new generation of Argentina hockey stars.

Since the Champions Trophy, Argentina has been on its travels and seen fortunes improve. A four-nations event in Germany against the host nation, France and Ireland saw them finish in second place behind Germany.

They then crossed the world to take on the world number one side and reigning World Cup champions, Australia. A confidence-boosting win at the 2018 Darwin International will have raised the excitement levels in Los Leones camp as they seek to add World Cup gold to their Rio Olympic gold medal.

As the final weeks of preparation count down, Argentina are back at their base camp at Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires. Here, they are going through some tough training sessions to ensure they are physically and mentally in the right place.

Fitness will certainly not be an issue for the team in blue and white. Over the past few months, Orozco has made sure his players are at the height of fitness with an intensive program of physical work on the athletics track, in the gym and pool.

“The mentality among the players is one of single-minded determination to win the trophy.” says the head coach, “Many of these players are Olympic champions and do not want to settle for that alone.

“The players know that what they achieved in Rio came as a result of hard work. To repeat that success will be very difficult but we will try to build on that achievement. We have taken stock of the Olympic success and we will use what worked well and re-evaluate the things we know we can do better.”

What the spectators can certainly expect from Orozco’s team is a lot of fast, attacking hockey. He has promised that his side will be “attacking” and “protagonists in every game,” although he is quick to stress that the defensive side of things will still be key to success.

The head coach knows the pressure is on. His side are number two in the FIH Hero World Rankings and the reigning Olympic champions. It is a weight that Orozco acknowledges: “For me, there is the pressure that comes with leading one of the best teams in the world. But this is something I will thrive on and the pressure will certainly not take my focus off the goal.”

Argentina will be competing in Pool A, where they face Spain (WR:8), New Zealand (WR:9) and France (WR:20).

Canada will be competing in Pool C, where their opening game is against Belgium (WR:3). They then play South Africa (WR:15) before facing the cauldron that comes from playing India (WR:5) in front of the vociferous home crowd.

Odisha Hockey World Cup Preview

The international calendar of hockey for 2018 concludes with one of the blue ribbon events the Men's Hockey World Cup. This event takes place every 4 years and is an event that our Vantage Black Sticks Men have traditionally performed very well in.

The Hockey World Cup was first contested in 1971, the 2018 edition will be the 14th time that the event has been held. This tournament features some terrific teams from all around the world with some notable teams being the defending champions and world number 1 side Australia who destroyed The Netherlands 6-1 at The Hague in the final. Defending Olympic Gold Medalists Argentina who possesses one of the worlds most feared drag flickers in Gonzalo Peillat. The Belgium Red Lions are returning a largely unchanged side from the team that won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics and possess 2017 world player of the year Arthur Van Doren.

This will be the 10th time that our Vantage Black Sticks have qualified for the tournament and they will be looking to build on their all to familiar 7th place finish from The Hague in 2014. 7th place is the best result that we have had so far in the Hockey World Cup a result we have gained on 4 previous occasions.

The Vantage Black Sticks will be fielding an experienced side which remains largely unchanged from the side that was sent to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Vastly experienced attacking defender Blair Tarrant returns to lead the side for his second World Cup having missed the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games due to injury. The kiwis took Australia to the brink in that tournament and if they can capitalise on some of their opportunities then this is going to shape up as a side that can medal at the Odisha Men's Hockey World Cup.

Coach Darren Smith arrives at the World Cup for the 4th time having previously been a playing member for 2 and a assistant coach for one. He has named a side that is led in experience by two incredibly resolute defenders in Shea McAleese (272) and Arun Panchia (253).

The Vantage Black Sticks have a wealth of experience in the defensive unit and will be looking for these players to build a good foundation and give their strikers some great attacking ball which will provide the young striking unit the opportunity to score. The strikers will be led by Stephen Jenness (215) who has just returned from playing over in Europe. Jenness will be looking to build on his 80 international goals and move into 4th place on the Vantage Black Sticks all time goal scoring list.

The Vantage Black Sticks first game is on the 30th November at 2:30am with coverage on Sky Sport 4, they will then play 2 further pool matches against Argentina and Spain in the hopes of qualifying for the knock out rounds starting on the 11th December.
