Black Sticks go down to polished Chinese

The Black Sticks put up a gutsy performance in the final test against China in Pukekohe, but could not match the finishing of the Champions Trophy-bound Asian side.

The Chinese ran out 4 – 2 winners, and while Coach Mark Hager would have been disappointed with the scoreline, many of the developing young players stepped up well.

In the first half New Zealand were unlucky to not score on several occasions. China struck in the 12th minute through their first penalty corner. Ma Jibo showed her international class with a lethal drag flick giving debuting keeper Sally Rutherford no chance.

New Zealand were awarded three corners but were unlucky not to convert.

The Black Sticks went 2 – 0 down close to half time, when Liao Jiahui scored from close range, from the field.

Despite some positive work it was a case of the Chinese making the most of their opportunities for the deserved half time lead.

The second half opened awfully for the New Zealanders conceding a corner in the first minute which Ma Jibo slotted again with another classy drag flick.

The Black Sticks scored their first goal 15 minutes later, Krystal Forgesson deflecting home a Kate Saunders direct shot from a penalty corner.

Charlotte Harrison added another shortly after putting the final touch on a ball deflected at goal by Gemma Flynn from a strong hit into the circle.

That brought the Black Sticks to within a goal of China, but an error in the midfield in the 68th minute gifted the fast breaking Chinese counter attack their final goal, finished by Judiao Zhao.

Sally Rutherford played well in her first game in the goal for the Black Sticks, playing the first half before being replaced by Beth Jurgeleit.

Stacey Brannigan was solid in defence once more and Gemma Flynn’s pace on attack created trouble for the Chinese. Experienced players Kayla Sharland stepped up at centre half and Stacey Carr was strong in the midfield.

Beng Hai: Win over France shows good side of national team

By S. RAMAGURU

KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Tai Beng Hai has rated the national team’s performance against France in the Champions Challenge II hockey tournament in Dublin on Tuesday as the best he had seen in recent months.

And he wants them to keep up the good show now that attention will focus on Malaysia after the failure of top seeds Japan to make the semi-finals.

“There was better mobility and better teamwork,” said Beng Hai of his team, who defeated France 4-2 for their second win in Group B of the tournament at the UCD Hockey Stadium.

“It was close to what we want from the team. There were not many errors and the important thing was the players’ ability to keep to the structure. They were also sharp in their moves.

“This is what we want. The pressure will built on the team as we progress further. Now that we are in the semi-finals, we have three matches more to play. Every match will be tough and we cannot afford to relax.”

Malaysia, who are ranked 16th in the world, are now the favourites to win the title following the elimination of the 14th ranked Japan from the semi-finals.

Malaysia, who defeated Austria 3-2 in their opening match on Monday, will wrap up their group fixtures against Russia today.

Beng Hai added that the two national juniors, Faizal Saari and Mohamed Marhan Mohamed Jalil, could expect to be fielded against Russia. Faizal featured against Austria while Mohamed Marhan has yet to take the field.

“Yes, we will make some changes as we can afford to experiment. But the objective will be to win the match and prepare ourselves for the semi-final challenge,” he said.

Ireland and Poland qualified for the semi-finals after chalking up their second win in Group A on Tuesday.

Poland, who beat Japan 3-2 the previous day, defeated Chile 3-2. And Ireland, who beat Chile 3-0 in their opening match, downed Japan by the same margin. Poland and Ireland will meet today to decide the group winners.

Three teams are in the running for the last semi-final berth from Group B. France need to beat Austria to advance. If they fail, Austria and Russia stand a chance to make the cut. But the Russians have to beat Malaysia by a big margin.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday and the final is scheduled for Sunday.

Focus required in bid for history

By Ajitpal Singh

MALAYSIA, after two easy wins, are on course to lifting their first ever major international hockey title in the Champions Challenge II but the team must stay focused on their final Group B match against Russia in Dublin today.

Malaysia, who defeated Austria 3-2 and France 4-2, need a favourable result against Russia to top their group, ensuring easier opponents in the semi-finals.

Team manager George Koshy said the players' morale and confidence are on a high and they should continue with the flow.

"The players are doing very well and performance wise, they have improved tremendously compared to their performance in the Asia Cup (May)," said Koshy when contacted in Dublin yesterday.

"The players are also adapting well to the chilly conditions in Dublin. Everything is all right here."

Malaysia last played Russia, when it was known as USSR, in 1991.

Malaysia were edged 3-2 in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and were later thrashed 6-2 in the Olympic Qualifiers in Auckland, that year.

However, the Russian team, who have only managed a point from two matches, are not as strong as before and Malaysia should win the match and top the group.

Malaysia will be banking on Amin Rahim, who has been instrumental in the team's current good form in the tournament, for goals from penalty corners.

The defender has scored three and Malaysia need him to increase his tally today.

TODAY -- Group A: Japan v Chile, Poland v Ireland; Group B: Malaysia v Russia, Austria v France.

England U18 teams in Euro semis

England’s Under 18 Boys and Girls have both secured semi-final places at the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships in Belgium

England’s boys had already secured their appearance in the last four prior to yesterday’s top of the table clash with Germany, but England’s girls needed at least a draw to assure them of their semi-final spot and they did this comfortably with a 3-1 victory over Ireland.  The Under 18 Boys will face Belgium whilst the Under 18 Girls, who topped their group, will take on the Netherlands in the semi-finals, both of which take place on Friday.

In their third match of the European Championships, England’s Under 18 Boys let a 2-1 half-time lead slip to lose out by a solitary goal to their German counterparts in a hard fought game where defensive errors again let them down.  Both sides were already assured of a place in Friday’s semi-finals but this match represented a battle for the top spot in the pool.

Dominic Bowden opened the scoring with a goal from the edge of the circle after a swift move in the 23rd minute before Harry Martin doubled England’s lead five minutes later with another shot from the top of the circle.  At this point, England had complete control of the game but were pegged back by a penalty corner converted by Philip Pierspert just before half-time.

After the break England struggled to control the German counter attacks and following two errors, conceded goals in the 57th and 65th minutes to go 3-2 down.

“We were the dominant side up until the break, but again, we were let down by our defensive play” said Manager Steve Floyd after the match.

Elsewhere in England’s group, Poland went on to beat Scotland 4-1 after the two sides were locked at 1-1 at the interval. In Pool B, Spain put in a dominant display to overturn Russia 7-3 and Belgium, who had a 3-0 lead at half-time, went on to beat The Netherlands 4-3.  The other semi-final sees The Netherlands and Germany go head to head.

Thursday sees a rest day for all sides before the semi-finals take place on Friday.

U18 Girls v Ireland, EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships (Nivelles, Belgium)

A well-deserved 3-1 victory against Ireland secured England their place in the semi-finals of the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships with Shona McCallin, Becky Dru and Holly Chipman all contributing goals.

It was Ireland however who took the lead in the 10th minute through an open play goal netted by Alison Meeke.  Despite going a goal behind, England stuck to the game plan and hit back through McCallin with a strike from the top of the circle.  The score at half-time remained 1-1, but England took the lead after the interval in the 43rd minute when Becky Dru duly converted from the penalty spot.

Holly Chipman then gave England a two goal cushion ten minutes later when she successfully converted a penalty corner to leave Ireland with an uphill struggle.

England Manager Lesley McIntosh commented “Our win was well deserved – we matched Ireland’s passion and competed for every ball throughout the 70 minutes.  Although there was less flowing hockey than in our previous match, we were clinical on set players and fully deserved our victory.  Top spot in the group is a just reward for three good performances.”

Elsewhere in England’s group, Belgium defeated France 3-0 whilst in Pool B, Russia just had the edge over Lithuania in a 2-1 victory and The Netherlands and Germany could not be separated at 0-0.  The other semi-final will be played out between Germany and Belgium.

Scots bulldoze Ukraine

Scotland’s U18 girls bulldozed Ukraine 5-0 today as the team swaggered closer to top ranks at the EuroHockey Youth Nations Trophy in Madrid.

Coach, and ex Olympian, Rhona Simpson said: “This is exactly where we hoped and expected to be at this stage of the tournament.  We had played Wales before, and were confident, but playing Ukraine was an unknown. The bottom line is, the girls have done well and they’ve coped with the heat.”

Performance Manager Callum McLeod added: “Today Scotland dominated from start to finish-the girls are getting more and more confident.”

Scotland was ready to score from the whistle as Rachel Malcolm (Glasgow Western/Hutcheson’s Grammar) netted a goal within six minutes from open play.  Soon after, Kerry Hall (Cala Edinburgh/George Watsons) whizzed past four Ukrainian players and placed a reverse stick shot into the back of the net.

Ukraine held the Scots to a two point lead until half-time but quickly after the break Louise Fleming (Giffnock HC/Edinburgh Uni) made good use of a penalty corner to increase the score line to 3-0.

Daniele Johnston (Cala Edinburgh/George Watsons) repeated her two goal feat against Wales by netting the ball in the 41st minute and again in the 61st minute to secure Scotland’s final 5-0 victory.

Scotland currently sit on top of pool B, alongside Wales and Ukraine. Belarus was supposed to be in this group but pulled out of the competition last minute.  The Scots will face the second place team of pool A, which hosts Spain, Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland, at 15:30 GMT time on Saturday.

Despite not knowing who they’ll face next, after two days rest, coach Simpson commented: “We’re going to concentrate on our game, stay on track and keep the girls focussed. We can beat any of these teams, especially if we continue to play the way we have.”

Scots down but not out

Scotland’s U18 men were left down and out today after a 4-1 loss to Poland in the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championships in Belgium, but the squad still have a chance to remain in the Championship division.

“We started better and dominated the first half but we let the game slip away from us after the break. The squad is gutted, they know they can play better-and they did play better yesterday,” said Scotland manager Ewan Green.

Despite holding their own against European Champions Germany yesterday and a strong start against Poland today, Scotland took their foot off the gas in the second half allowing the Poles to pull ahead.

Within fifteen minutes of the match, Josh Cairns (Azzurri Kelburne) got Scotland off to a good start by scoring the first goal of the match from a penalty corner.  However, Poland was able to equalise leading to a one all score line at half-time.

According to Green, the squad started the second half bright but dimmed when Poland took a 2-1 lead, leaving the Scots to chase. The Scots pushed but Poland broke and scored on the counter attack.  Scotland failed to convert several good chances and the Poles were able to score one more in before the final whistle.

“We didn’t play to our potential in the second half and we know that.  We’re not out of it yet but we’ve made it really difficult,” added Green.

Scotland must win their two remaining games against Spain and Russia and rely on Spain to beat Russia later today in order to still have a chance to remain in the Championship level.  Scotland face Spain next at 7:30 GMT on Friday.

SA hockey team confident of defending title at Africa Cup of Nations

South Africa's men's hockey team is confident of successfully defending its Africa Cup of Nations title when the tournament kicks off in Accra, Ghana this weekend.

The team recently brought home a gold medal at the recent four nation’s invitational tournament in Moscow where they triumphed over Bangladesh, Russia and Canada.  The South Africans beat Canada 8-1 in the final. The team’s captain, Austin Smith says:  "We're definitely going there to win the gold medal; it means we automatically qualify for the world cup in New Delhi in March, so we're definitely looking to win the tournament."

South Africa is ranked 15th in the world and have won seven of the eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments held since 1993.  The main contender to South Africa's throne is Egypt, following Kenya's withdrawal from the tournament. "It’s a difficult tournament playing in the African continent, but I think we've got one or two key players and a few drag pickers and defence specialists," added Smith.

Apart from the African Cup of Nations, South Africa takes part in a champions challenge tournament in Argentina in December where some of the top 8 hockey nations will participate.

Row threatens Kenya's hockey participation

By Buckley Fedha

Three days to the kick-off of the Hockey African Cup of Nations, Kenya's representation hangs in the balance.

Kenya Hockey Union, on Saturday decided to withdraw from the tournament citing lack of funds to send the teams to Ghana.

The simmering row between the government and the Kenya Hockey Union over who has failed in their roles threatens Kenya's number 2 and 3 ranking in Africa for women and men respectively

The government claims the union is shifting blame in the wrong direction in the tussle that seems to leave more questions than answers.

Kenya stands to miss out on next year's Commonwealth Games and Hockey World Cup both to be held in New Delhi India as the Ghana event serves as the qualifier for both events.

It will be the second time this year for Kenya to skip an international event citing lack of government support after the netballers failed to feature in the World Cup qualifiers held in Namibia in April.

Ultimate goal is WC, CWG: Sandeep

Vaibhav Sharma, Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 8 - With the Indian men’s hockey team set to leave for their tour to Europe, starting from July 27, captain Sandeep Singh is confident that whatever the outcome of these matches be, this will be a big boost to the team’s learning curve.

“You have to understand that these are preparatory tours. The bigger aim is ahead of us next year; the World Cup and Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi. That will be our big test and we are making the most of all opportunities provided to us in order to be ready for these two big tournaments,” Sandeep said while talking to The Tribune.

Also talking about Jose Brasa’s impact on the team and the ongoing camp in Pune, Sandeep sounded very optimistic. “He has had a positive impact on the players. There is good understanding between the coaching staff and the players. I feel his inputs, which are at times different to what we have done in the past, will help broaden our perspective of the game.”

It has been a dizzying ride for the skipper and he knows what it is like to grow up, on the field and off it too. The added responsibility of the skippper’s arm-band have made him more aware of the game and its changing dynamics. “I think captaincy has worked positively for me. I have been able lift my game up and I read the game better now. We all analyse our game all the time and the constant effort has been to keep improving upon your strengths and curbing your weaknesses. After all being satisfied is the shortest route to doom for any sp

Malaysia to play in Aussie quadrangular tournaments

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will compete in two quadrangular hockey tournaments in Canberra and Adelaide from July 23-Aug 4.

They will be part of the team’s preparations for the World Cup qualifying tournament in November.

In the tournaments, Malaysia will be up against two Australian sides and Canada, who have already secured direct entry to the World Cup Finals next year as Pan American champions.

The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary, Hashim Mohamed Yusof, said that the tournaments would provide the national team more quality matches.

“We already have an European tour in August. As part of the invite by the Australians, we will reciprocate with an invitation to them to play some Test matches in Kuala Lumpur. The will finalise the dates later,” he said.

The national team are now in Dublin for the Champions Challenge II tournament, which ends on Sunday.

Hashim added that a decision on the formation of the national B team will be made by the MHF council at their meeting on July 18.

“The coaching committee will meet on Saturday to discuss recommendations to be made to the council. We are aware of the SEA (South-East Asia) tournament and we will have to whether a national B side need to be formed urgently,” he said.

Hashim also said that Malaysia would field two teams in the second Indoor Asia Cup, which will be held in Ipoh from Aug 4-9.

“Current national players will not be part of the teams. The decision will be made next week on the composition of the teams,” he said.

Last year, Sapura represented Malaysia and they were the runners-up behind Iran.

The Army team need to beat Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) on Sunday and hope for Ipoh City Council to snatch at least a draw against UiTM.

Where now MHF?

Malaysian Hockey will come under the microscope once again in the middle of this month when the MHF holds their Council Meeting. Not that we expect any major changes or shift in policy matters, let alone expecting the stakeholders (being the affiliates) to question the decisions made by the Management Committee or other Sub-Committees over the past few months.

Consider this, Malaysia played hosts to three major tournaments over the space of three months, the Azlan Shah Cup Tournament, the Asia Cup and the Junior World Cup. But not one seminar or course was held during these tournaments, thus a wasted opportunity for those who could have picked up a thing or two from a host of world hockey experts who visited our shores. We could have held a coaching, umpiring, technical, development or even medical seminar/courses but none were held, and despite there being voices of discontent in the corridors, none of them will raise it during the Council Meeting.

A flurry of meetings by the Sub-Committees are being lined up this weekend, leading up to the Council Meeting, so that it will "seem" that these sub committees were actually doing work, when all they have done is sleeping on the job. They may have their reasons, but then again it could be sheer "tidak apa" attitude, and this contributes towards the decline of hockey in the country. Those on the committees have been entrusted with a responsibility and if it lack of support from the administration that is causing them to shy away, then they ought to speak up or walk away.

The Wawasan and Consultative Committees were to go through the proposal of the 102 Ex-Internationals, but they have not met since late last year. The composition of these committees is also in doubt following the resignation of the likes of Mirnawan Nawawi, George Koshy and Maninderjit Singh. Then we have the Development Committee which has yet to come out with a sound program despite having a capable chairman in the likes of Ken Pereira.

So where does that leave Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and his vision to take Malaysian Hockey to a higher level? To him I can only offer the following advice...

Ultimately it all boils down to what the players can do on the pitch to change the negative perception of Malaysian Hockey as it is obvious off the field we shall do not better if not for a change in mindset.

As in business, employee talent is the cornerstone of success. Their expertise and capabilities win matches or perform the work thereby creating values for clients, and generate loyalty from investors. Thus it is ultimateky left to the players.

So it pays to create an environment where employees meet fresh, exciting challenges and experience the satisfaction of a job well done. But how do we get people to share our core values one might ask. You don't. You can't.

Just find people that are "predisposed" to share your values and purpose, attract and retain those people, and let those who don't share your values go elsewhere. This entire exercise is about having your integrity in - in the sense of your authentic values and your courage to act congruently all of the time.

And could it be that the seemingly unending quest for the answer - will ultimately take you back to the beginning - to what you are and what you stand for? And perhaps, this could be the first step to the beginning ... on the path to greatness.

KZN Inland lose to WP

By Mike Hill

THE KZN Inland team lost 2-1 against Western Province in their fifth pool match of the Under 16 interprovincial tournament in Potchefstroom, in a good game of hockey.

Inland are nevertheless through to the semi-final, as they were runners up in the pool behind WP.

In an evenly-contested match, WP scored a goal with a deflection in the first half to lead 1-0 at the break. They then went 2-0 in front. The local youngsters came back with a penalty corner with seven minutes remaining. Grant Glutz (College) made sure of a goal from a penalty corner to close the gap. Glutz has now scored a record 10 goals in the five pool matches.

Coach Brandon Swart was pleased that WP had not outplayed KZN Inland, and he feels that they have a good chance of meeting in the final. That is, if they beat Southern Free State today, who have won Pool B despite losing their last match 0-3 against KZN Coastals. This win by Coastals and their 3-1 win against SWD puts them second in Pool B, thus matching them to play WP in the first game today.

KZN boys shine at U13 hockey festival

Jonathan Cook

WHEN tournament post-mortems are conducted, the KZN boys’ derby will come up for consideration as the best match seen at the National U13 Hockey Festival in Pietermaritzburg this year.

The AB Jackson Greenfields Turf saw a rousing exhibition of hockey when KZN Coastals shaded KZN Inland 3-2 before a packed house yesterday afternoon.

In an action-packed first half, Coastals opened the scoring with a penalty corner by Andile Phehlukwayo after five minutes. Inland struck back with one of there own by Amkelwe Letuka. Coastals captain Jarryd Edy’s PC made it 2-1 inside the first 10 minutes. Then a minute before half-time, Inland captain Mudiwa Llobell conjured up a stunning left-handed deflection goal high into the net off a pinpoint cross from the right to leave the score 2-2.

The second half was a cut-and-thrust affair as both sides sought the advantage, although Coastals’ policy of playing ace goalscorer Nqobile Ntuli way out on the left was mystifying, as the scorer of five goals in two matches Tuesday hardly ever got the ball.

Nevertheless, Coastals got the break for a vital 3-2 lead when the outstanding Edy slotted his second PC. Galvanised by the setback, Inland’s skilful Tevin Kok began weaving his magic; deft runs here and just the right pass there creating holes in the Coastals defence. Penalty corners and a penalty stroke were not converted, though, and in the end the Durban boys just about deserved their victory.

Inland probably saved their best for last, though, when they beat WP 3-0 in a fantastic late game at the ABJ, goals from Ross Talmage, Jacques Swart and Werner van Staden accounting for the Capetonians.

Meanwhile, at the SA U16 Girls’ IPT at University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, both KZN Inland and KZN Coastals have reached today’s semi-finals.

Coastals beat Inland 2-0 yesterday through a brace by Jacinta Jubb and shaded North West 1-0 (Karabu Dube), while Inland beat Free State A 1-0 (Nadine Herholdt). Today’s semis see Inland tackling EP and Coastals facing Southern Gauteng.
