Panposh XI delight
Talented Panposh XI, Orissa played attractive hockey to overcome Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai 3-1 in an exciting second round tie for a place in the elite main draw, in the 47th Bombay Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at the MHA-Mahindra Stadium on Sunday.
Panposh, who join Air India and Karnataka XI in Group B in the elite league, sounded an early warning by earning a first minute penalty corner. Though their first attempt at goal was foiled, they breached the IOB defence just two minutes later when defender Amit Rohit Das fired home off their second penalty corner, for the first of his two goals.
But the equally impressive IOB ignored the early setback and earned three back-to-back penalty corners in the sixth minute to put the pressure back on Panposh, in a match between quality teams who exhibited fine stick work and good moves to the delight of the Sunday crowd.
IOB’s hard work paid dividends when Vinod Rayer found the equaliser in the ninth minute following a brilliant move.
But in a counter move in the next minute, Panposh surged ahead to earn their third penalty corner where Rohit Das was on target for a 2-1 lead.
Undeterred, IOB ignored the deficit and combined well to come up with a determined challenge.
They should have equalised but Gopinath’s powerful hit off a penalty corner was brilliantly saved on the goalline by Bipin Kerketta. Soon after, IOB had another chance but Aiyappan’s reverse hit went over.
While IOB tried hard for the equaliser, Panposh initiated a sudden move and were rewarded with their third goal as striker Jems Jidan Munda, who scored three goals in their opening match against Lucknow United, connected to beat IOB goalkeeper Arun Gandhi.
IOB had a chance to reduce the margin but Panposh goalkeeper Saurabh Singh, who came up with a plethora of saves for an outstanding performance, blocked Muthulselvan’s 33rd minute penalty stroke.
With Panposh in control with a 3-1 lead, IOB, who squandered eight penalty corners in the process, struggled to breach the rival defence in a surprisingly barren second half.
Result: Panposh XI 3 (Amit Rohitdas 2, Jems Jidan Munda) bt Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai 1 (Vinod Rayer).

Panposh XI makes main draw
MUMBAI: Panposh XI (Orissa) overcame Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) 3-1 in an exciting second round tie of the 47th Bombay Gold Cup hockey tournament on Sunday.
The former makes the main draw in Group ‘B’ with Air India and Karnataka XI.
Amit Rohitdas slammed the ball home off the second penalty corner for Panposh’s first goal. IOB took the setback in the stride, displayed delightful hockey to put the Orissa rivals under pressure.
Vinod Rayer scored a ninth-minute equaliser, setting the tone for an entertaining game at the Mahindra-MHA Stadium.
Rohitdas converted a penalty corner again to put Panposh up 2-1, then faced the heat as Gopinath and Aiyappan almost scored.
A counter-attack fetched Orissa the third goal, forward Jems Jidan Munda was on target in a field attempt, then goalkeeper Saurabh Singh foiled a penalty stroke from IOB’s Muthuselvan.

BJSS confirm their semis spot
By Jugjet Singh
MALAYSIA Hockey League (MHL) Division Two champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) drubbed Division Three runners-up Temerloh 9-0 in the quarter-finals first leg at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
BJSS will be going on a well-deserved holiday to Kuantan on Wednesday for the return leg, which has been turned into a side-show after yesterday's massacre.
However, Tenaga Nasional could only edge Malacca 3-2, while two goals in the last two minutes saw Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS) beat Nur Insafi 4-2.
In another match in Bukit Jalil, Petaling Jaya City Council beat Anderson of Ipoh 3-0.
Tenaga, playing in Malacca, took a 3-0 lead off Sabri Mohamed (eighth, 27th) and Aminuddin Abu (27th), but the hosts reduced the deficit off Syakir Amir (42nd) and Amirullah Zainol (52nd) to keep pace for the return leg.
In Manjung, Nur Insafi and BPSS were level at 2-2 before the Johor sports school scored two goals in the dying minutes to take a two-goal cushion.
Nur Insafi got their goals through Abdul Rahim (14th) and K. Satesh (44th), while BPSS were handed a lifeline by hat-trick hero Amir Farid (23rd, 64th, 69th) while the 70th minute damage was done by Noor Faeez.
"We had a good lead after 35 minutes, and instead of increasing it in the second half the team played badly and now we only have a one-goal cushion. However, we will be playing at home, and I believe my players will perform better in the return leg," said Tenaga assistant team manager Jasbere Singh.
RESULTS -- Q-finals, 1st leg: Bukit Jalil Sports School 9 Temerloh 0; Nur Insafi 2 Bandar Penawar Sports School 4; Malacca 2 Tenaga Nasional 3; Petaling Jaya CC 3 Anderson 0.
Return Leg -- April 22: Temerloh v Bukit Jalil Sports School (Kuantan Stadium, 5pm); Bandar Penawar Sports School v Nur Insafi (Bandar Penawar, 5pm); Tenaga Nasional v Malacca (KLHA Stadium, 5pm); Anderson v Petaling Jaya CC (Azlan Shah Stadium, 5pm).

BJSS humble Temerloh in nine-goal rout
By S. RAMAGURU
KUALA LUMPUR: Division Two league champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) have virtually sealed their place in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) Under-19 category after a 9-0 rout of SMK Temerloh in the first-leg of the quarter-finals at the National Hockey Stadium here yesterday.
SMK Temerloh were the Division Three runners-up and it was their first-ever match against a Division two side.
It was a mismatch from the start and it took the sports school just a minute to open the floodgates with Mohd Fahmi Faiz slotting home a field goal.
By half-time, BJSS were ahead by six goals.
Hairulnizam Maizan scored a brace in the 13th and 49th minute from penalty corners while Mohd Izzat Hakimi also had two goals in the 40th and 43rd minutes.
The other goal scorers for the sports school were Dangerous Lee (29th), Shazril Irwan (52nd), Fahed Saifullah (53rd) and Mohamed Aslan (70th).
BJSS coach S. Prakash was stunned by the meek surrender of the Pahang side.
“We were not sure what to expect but the big scoreline was a surprise. Our players did well to get into the game from the start and the early goal unsettled the Temerloh side.
“We have a leg in the semis and the second leg will allow us to try out the reserves. It was a good effort from the players but we must keep out feet on the ground,” said Prakash.
At the Manjung Hockey Stadium, Division Three champions Nur Insafi were one minute from hold the more fancied Bandar Penawar Sports School only to concede twice in the dying seconds of the 2-4 loss.
The depleted Nur Insafi side took the lead twice and were almost on the verge of pulling off a draw.
Abdul Rahim Jalil gave them the lead in the 14th minute before the sports school equalised in the 23rd minute through Amir Farid.
Nur Insafi again led through K. Satesh’s 44th minute goal only for Amir to net the equaliser in the 64th minute before completing his hat-trick in the 69th minute. A last-second penalty corner also yielded another goal for the sports school from Mohd Noor Faeez.
At the Malacca Hockey Stadium, Tenaga Nasional edged MSN Malacca 3-2.
Tenaga took a 3-0 lead in the first half but a late fightback saw the Malacca side reducing the deficit with two field goals.
Tenaga’s Mohd Sabri Mohamed scored from penalty corners in the eighth and 27th minutes while Mohd Aminuddin Abu was their other goal getter in the 13th minute. MSN Malacca’s scorers were Mohamed Syakir Amir (42nd minute) and Amirullah Zainol (52) .
The return leg matches will be played on Wednesday.
First-leg: Bukit Jalil SS 9 SMK Temerloh 0, MBPJ 3 Anderson 0, MSN Malacca 2 Tenaga Nasional 3, Nur Insafi 2 Bandar Penawar SS 3.

Asia Cup camp gets underway in Lahore today
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Previously discarded as spent force, several senior national players will join the final phase of Pakistan's preparatory camp for next month's Asia Cup at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore from Monday (today).
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has included four senior players including short corner specialist Sohail Abbas in the preliminary squad for the Asia Cup to be played in Kuantan (Malaysia) from May 9-15.
Former Pakistan captains Waseem Ahmed, Rehan Butt and goalie Salman Akber are the other three senior players who are expected to bolster Pakistan's chances in the eight-nation contest that will serve as the qualifying rounds for the 2010 World Cup in India.
A total of 16 players have been asked to report at the camp that will be in top gear from Tuesday (tomorrow), Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan told 'The News' on Sunday.
"The players will gather in Lahore tomorrow. A few of the senior players will report for duty later in the week as they are yet to return from Holland where they've been playing club hockey," said Shahid.
Pakistan are hoping to bounce back in the Asia Cup after flopping miserably in the five-nation Sultan Azlan Shah Cup played in Ipoh (Malaysia) from April 5-12. Pakistan finished a disappointing fourth in the event.
Shahid said that Pakistan will be carrying out some extensive drills over the next week or so before an 18-man squad for the Asia Cup is named after trials on April 29.
"We have identified a few key areas in which a lot of hard work is needed," he said. "Our boys have to improve in short corner offense and defense and the forwards will have to enhance their scoring prowess," added the former Olympian.
Shahid said that he and fellow coaches will monitor the fitness of the players over the next seven days and mostly be focusing on the senior players who will be returning for national duty after a big gap.
"We have to ensure that our boys are fully match fit ahead of the Asia Cup which is a tough assignment," he said.

A shot in the arm
The country’s hockey could be considered to be on the right track after the running of the game was taken over from the Indian Hockey Federation, dominated for over a decade by supercop-turned-sports administrator K P S Gill. The winning, after 14 years, of the Azlan Shah Cup at Ipoh is a step in that direction.
The most number of goals scored in the tournament was by Sandeep Singh who was not even in the IHF’s scheme of things after suffering an injury. At this year’s Azlan Shah tournament, India beat New Zealand and then Pakistan, before going on to defeat hosts Malaysia by a convincing margin in the finals on Sunday.
However, the real test will come when India plays hockey superpowers like Holland, Germany, Australia and Spain. For that, India will have to qualify for the two major international tournaments where the world’s best hockey-playing nations will be participating — the Olympics and the World Cup.
India failed to automatically qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the national team could not reach the semi-finals of the 2006 Qatar Asian Games after losing to China for the first time in an international tournament. So India’s performance in the 2010 World Cup, to be held in New Delhi, will be watched with keen interest.
However, with the FIH — the game’s international body — reportedly indicating that the event could be shifted out of India if it is not hosted by the national hockey federation, there is some degree of uncertainty over the country’s participation.
What could be crucial is India’s performance at the 2010 Asian Games at Guangzhou, China. Many more steps, both on and off the hockey field, will have to be taken for the Azlan Shah Cup to be seen as the beginning of a renaissance for Indian hockey. Until then, The Times of India headline, Ipoh not an epoch, just about sums up things.
