May 25, Moorpark, CA: Form held true in both Men and Women Super Divisions on Day 1 at Cal Cup 2007. The tournament got underway early in the morning with Stanford Cardinal and RUSH’D playing to a 1-1 tie followed by an impressive 8-0 win for Malvern over Chicks with Sticks on the strength of 3 goals from Stacy Sui Butt, the veteran captain of Trinidad and Tobago national team in pool A of Women’s Division. Mexico women scored 3 goals in the first half and held on for a 3-2 victory over PAC Attack in pool B. This followed a 4-2 California win over the College All Stars.
Dirty Birds from Vancouver British Colombia started the action in the Men’s Super Division with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the local team Mystery. This match featured an outstanding effort on both ends by the young Viren Padhair of Mystery, who went high on a PC rebound to level score at 1-1 and then went high again, this time to make a brilliant goal line save to keep his team in the match, after his goalkeeper was beaten on a rising shot. Men’s second match however was a 10-0 trashing of San Francisco by Namdhari from India with Bachitar Singh, Karmjit Singh and Sher Singh netting two goals each.
After the Cardinals shutout the Chicks 3-0 and Ciudad de Buenos Aires women did the same to RUSH’D with a 2-0 score, defending champions Monarcas had their way with College All Stars as their captain Gohar Harutyunyan, a former national player from Ukraine, netted 3 goals. Men’s defending champions Ciudad de Buenos Aires followed soon with their one sided affair, scoring 4 goals in each half as Santiago Capurro led the charge, also with 3 goals. Capurro started the scoring for the Argentineans in the second minute on a penalty corner and ended the scoring after the clock had run out, also on a penalty corner for 8-0 final tally.
