Missing connections: How India’s Hockey Junior World Cup title hopes went up in smoke against Germany in the semifinals
Just by blocking of passing lines and staying within their structures, Germany barely allowed India to have any attacking joy.

India's problems were compounded by the fact that the errors started from the top of the pitch and trickled down. (PTI Photo)
In his post-match analysis after the 5-1 win against India at the FIH Junior World Cup in Chennai on Sunday, German coach Mirko Stenzel was full of praise for his side’s defence throughout the night and the intensity in the first quarter, more than the attacking unit that pumped in the five goals. But one line of his post-match analysis stood out: “To beat the individual-skilled players from India the way we did is incredibly hard.” It was evidently meant as a compliment to India’s style of hockey, but it also gave a glimpse into why Germany were able to thwart the hosts’ attacking forays on the night effectively. Just by blocking of passing lines and staying within their structures, Germany barely allowed India to have any attacking joy.![]()

Spain, Germany enter final of Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup
A first-time finalist, a team now eyeing it’s eighth title, and two sides with broken hearts – that was the story of the semi-finals day at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup in Chennai on Sunday. In other words, Spain entered their maiden final, defending champions Germany made it to their 10thtitle match and the hopes of a third trophy for India and Argentina ended.

Pressure engulfs Indian colts, let Germany relish Chennai ambience

Germany played a master class hockey to easily overcome the hosts and enter the final once more. Germany, which has Indian Olympic like record in the Junior World Cup domain, displayed such a precision and press that the Indians had no clue or answer. Their usually alert and inform goalie Prince Deep Singh and his replacement Bikramjit Singh gave away easily goals, rushing up early to let the hawkish Germany up the ante.
India beaten comprehensively by Germany in semifinal
The match had been highly anticipated, pitting the world’s No. 1 and No. 2-ranked junior sides against each other. However, any expectation of a close contest was immediately shattered, as Germany needed less than a minute to demonstrate the gulf in class and composure.

On a night when pretty much everything that could go wrong went wrong — the oft-repeated pithy version of Murphy’s Law — India were outplayed physically and tactically by a superior German side in the semifinals of the men’s FIH Junior World Cup in Chennai. The seven-time champions will get to defend their title after a 5-1 win as PR Sreejesh’s wards were left to rue to a poor start to the match and multiple errors in both sides of the pitch at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium where fans turned up in good numbers once more, but didn’t have much to cheer other than a late consolation goal when the match was all but done.
