Scots bounce back to beat France

Kelburne player Craig Morton at the National Play Offs earlier this year

U21 Scotland men turned the tables and got a deserved win over the French winning 2-1 this afternoon.

The Scots took the lead mid-way through the first half after a great interception in midfield was made Ross McIntyre put the ball away with a reverse stick shot.

France snatch a goal just before half time to keep it all level going into the second half. Kleburnes Craig Morton scored the winner tapping in a deflection form a Scottish short corner.

Head coach Graham Moodie is pleased with his team’s performance and believes this is a really good step ahead of the Europeans next week; ‘We battled out the win in the end, but France are a good team and it was a pleasing performance and result.’

KZN boys' each win three from three after day two of U18 IPT

JONATHAN COOK at Pape’s Astro

THREE matches in 24 hours left not only the KZN Inland players mentally and physically drained but also coach Brandon Swart; however the Pietermaritzburg-based province completed their third win in two days Wednesday and are well on course for a berth in Friday’s semi-finals.

Inland got past the highly competitive Border side 1-0.

Coach Justin Collins’ KZN Coastal side are also well on target for a berth in the last four after completing their second day with a three from three record.

Coastal got past a feisty Southern Free State 2-0 after leading 2-0 at the break. A brace by the talented Kearsney lad Ngobile Ntuli in the 18th and 21st minutes did the damage for the Durban-based side, before beating Western Province B 1-0 a few hours later.

The boys matches, which run from 7.30am at Papes through to the last start time at 6.10pm at the AB Jackson, sees just a few of the clashes that promise much Wednesday including that between Western Province and Eastern Province in the Battle of the Cape province at 8.50am.

Imran Butt aims to revive Pakistan hockey

By Nabil Tahir

KARACHI: Imran Butt – the younger brother of former national hockey team captain Rehan Butt – is an emerging hockey goalkeeper who has set himself a target to bring back accolades for Pakistan hockey.

At the eight-nation Asia cup in Malaysia where Pakistan finished third and missed the chance to appear in the 2014 hockey World Cup, the Greenshirts’ defence seemed vulnerable compared to powerhouses like Australia and the Netherlands.

Butt, who is likely to be selected for the upcoming Asian Games, is hopeful of improving the defence standards of the national team.

“There is no doubt that a goalkeeper has immense responsibilities,” the 25-year-old told The Express Tribune.

“The rule changes that favour goal-scoring have made things more difficult for us [goalkeepers].

“I’ve worked a lot with our coaches since the Asia Cup, and my target is to block the maximum number of moves to avoid a repeat of that event as well as the World Hockey League.

“I’ve trained with coaches Sameer Hussain and Abuzar Umrao, who are trying improve the quality of defence as well. [Head coach] Shahnaz Sheikh is also working with us using modern techniques.”

Butt said new talented players in the camp can help the Pakistan team win back its place in the hockey world.

“The management has included talented youngsters in the camp, and the coaches are trying their best to break the communication gap between them.”

The goalkeeper, who has been playing hockey since the age of 13, said that Pakistan’s qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics is his main target.

“My dream is to stand on atop the podium and receive a medal for my country,” said Butt, adding that he drew inspiration from former goalkeeper Salman Akbar.

“Pakistan hockey has earned a lot of achievements in the last Asian Games, and I aim to keep the standards high this time as well.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan Hockey Federation Secretary Rana Mujahid has said that the second phase of training camp for participation in the Asian Games will run from July 2-18 at the Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Islamabad.

By Lincoln Jefferson, Counties Manukau Sport

The home of the Southern Districts Hockey Club (SDHC) at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre created the perfect environment for two hundred children from eight schools to battle it out for the Primary Sport Invitational Cup.

Now in its fifth edition, the tournament is aimed as an introductory level to hockey for year five and six boys and girls.

The standard of the competition has been improving from year to year.

The semi-final between Flat Bush 1 and Bairds Mainfreight 2 was the pick of the games with the game going into overtime and a player drop off needed to determine the winning team.
