Kakamigahara: The first men’s hockey semi-final of the Asian Games 2026 saw a heart-stopping finish, with India winning the thriller against their arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 – thanks to a last-minute goal by Abhishek that kept India’s gold-medal defence alive.

After taking a 3-0 lead in the first half, Harmanpreet Singh and Co. eased off the gas, allowing Pakistan to fight back and level the score at 3-3.

Relieved. The predominant feeling in the Indian camp after sneaking past Pakistan 4-3 in the semifinal of the Asian Games here on Thursday. A game of two halves and seemingly two different Indian teams turning up for each half.

India head coach Craig Fulton was relieved rather than satisfied after the defending champions survived a stunning Pakistan fightback to clinch a dramatic 4-3 semifinal victory to enter the Asian Games hockey final on Thursday.

The last time India and China played each other in the Asian Games in 2023, the latter won 4-0, its biggest win on this stage. On Friday, when the two teams face off again in the final here, India will have a chance to not only avenge the defeat but also prove that the gap in recent years between the two sides was well and truly closing in.
