Series levelled

Kookaburras go down 2-1 to India in second Perth Test

Despite Matt Gohdes’ goal on the stroke of half time, the Kookaburras went down 2-1 to a resurgent India in the second of their four match series in Perth on Wednesday night.

Having found themselves ahead at the break after Gohdes’ persistence paid off at close range, Australia quickly found themselves behind as the visitors regrouped and emerged for the second half with a clear determination. It didn’t take long for it to pay dividends as Ramandeep Singh latched onto Sandeep Singh’s long pass four minutes after the restart, breaching Tyler Lovell's goal with the aid of a slight deflection. And just 60 seconds later Sunil Sowmarpet unleashed the goal of the series so far, collecting another long pass and lashing it home into the far top corner to put the Asian Games champions ahead.

Glenn Simpson had the best opportunities to level the match in the second half but was twice denied by Harjot Singh in the Indian goal; the first from a snap shot at the top of the circle, the second a low diving save at a penalty corner.

Coach Graham Reid once again gave youth its chance as the Kookaburras prepare for next month’s Champions Trophy with two more debutants in the green and gold, taking the series tally to five. When Tom Craig finally stepped out on Wednesday it was with as much relief as excitement and pride following a 48 hour scramble to secure an Australia passport in time to play. The Sydney-born 19 year old held a New Zealand passport through his parents but hadn’t ever applied for an Australian one, until he found himself falling foul of international hockey regulations.

And when goalkeeper Leon Hayward was introduced at the start of the second quarter he and younger brother Jeremy made their own bit of history, becoming the 19th brothers to represent Australia.

Afterwards, Kookaburras coach Graham Reid admitted his side hadn’t done enough. He said, “It’s hard to win when you don’t string passes together. That was one of the things we talked about – moving the ball quickly and passing. I don’t think we did that very well. We didn’t execute our skills well enough.

“India came out to play. They had been beaten 4-0 and we knew that they would come out and it would be a much more improved team and it was.

“We’ve got a good series happening and these young guys will learn a lot from it. It’s a very young group but that’s good. They’re learning what international hockey is about.”

The result - the Kookaburras’ first competitive defeat since losing to England at the World League Finals in January - sets up this weekend’s two remaining fixtures perfectly with the sides set to clash again in a double header on Saturday and Sunday.

Debutant Tom Craig admitted, “It’s a step up. That’s my first blood and it was end-to-end stuff just trying to keep up with the Indians. In the end it didn’t quite go our way but onwards to Saturday.

“You’re always going to be a little bit off the pace but I’m just glad for the opportunity. Hopefully, come Saturday some of the screws might be a little bit tighter and, hopefully, we can go on from there."

Explaining his passport panic, he said, “It’s been a bit frantic, a bit hectic. Not dissimilar to the third quarter of that match. I travel on a New Zealand passport and the [Australian] birth certificate isn’t enough proof of citizenship so I’ve been scrambling around trying to get a passport. I got that today and [stepped] out on the pitch. The folks are Kiwis so blame them, I guess. It happens.”

The third match in the series takes place on Saturday at 7pm AWST (10pm AEDT). The match will be shown live on the Hockey Australia YouTube channel.

Ramandeep Singh and SV Sunil scored for India, after Matt Gohdes had given Australia the lead in the 30th minute.

The Indian men's hockey team bounced back from their 4-0 opening match mauling against Australia, and beat the hosts 2-1, thanks to goals from Ramandeep Singh and SV Sunil.

India, who were thoroughly outclassed, in the opening match at Perth, looked set to be heading the same route, when Australia scored the opener in the 30th minute, thanks to forward Matt Gohdes deflecting a shot into goal, just before the end of the second quarter.

Despite the initial setback, India roared back in the third quarter, and leveled issues, thanks to Ramndeep's precise finish in the 33rd minute, which was set up by the excellent Sardar Singh.

The visitors made a comeback in the very next minute, thanks to Sunil, who dribbled past the Australian defence, and cooly converted his shot past the goalkeeper.

Stung by the Indian riposte, Australia raised their game and tried to come back into the match, only for a resolute India to ward off their attacking threat, during the rest of the game.

Though both sides made desperate forays, in their quest to gain more goals, still it was India, who managed to hold on to their slender 2-1 lead, and gain a morale bosting win ahead of the third test match.

India stun World Champions Australia to level series

PERTH: The Indian men's hockey team bounced back in style against Australia, beating the World Champions 2-1 to level the four-match Test series at 1-1 on Wednesday.

India started aggressively and kept the opponents' defence busy in the first two quarters. They managed to sneak into Australian defence-line and created good opportunities.

However, Australia drew first blood in the 30th minute when forward player Matt Gohdes deflected a shot and sent the ball into the goal, taking the lead before the end of second quarter.

In the third quarter, Australia earned a penalty corner which was well-defended by India before the visitors counter attacked the Australian D through a long pass. It was Sardar who cleverly forwarded the ball to Ramandeep Singh, who made no mistake in netting the ball, helping his team equalise in the 33rd minute.

The equaliser saw India increase their tempo as they attacked yet again the very next minute through a long pass into the opponents' D. This time, it was SV Sunil who single-handedly took the ball to the circle and cleverly put it past the goalkeeper, giving India the second goal and the lead.

In the fourth and final quarter, both India and Australia fought neck-and-neck. India continued their attacking game till the last minute and tried to create more chances but they were now up against a defensive Australia, who managed to hold the scorecard till the final whistle.

The third match of the series will be played on November 8.

Ireland made it three from three with a 4-0 win this afternoon in their final test match against Scotland which took place at Alexandra College this afternoon.  Talking after the match Coach Darren Smith said “Scotland are a good team so it was a great opportunity to play against a high quality outfit. These three games were hugely beneficial giving everyone in the national squad a run as well as giving us another three quality test matches as we continue our preparation for World League 2 taking place in Ireland next March.”

Commenting on what is next for this team Smith said “We have three more training camps, two in November and one in December, come January we will go into a warm weather training camp in Valencia as we continue to hone in on World League 2.”

Ireland dominated the match throughout but it was ex Alexandra College student Deidre Duke who opened the Green Army’s account with a tap in thanks to a setup from Nicci Daly. Just before half time Aine Connery pounced on a deflection giving Cochrane in goals no chance to make it 2-0. Scotland had their best chance of the half thanks to a penalty corner opportunity but Nicci Daly read it well picking up and clearing out to keep Ireland’s sheet clean.

Ireland continued to apply the pressure and as the momentum built Aine Connery got a touch off a great right cross to make it three. The game was pushed way beyond Scotland’s reach when Ireland scored their fourth and final goal when Anna O’Flanagan picked up the rebound from Emma Smyth’s shot.

Scotland women lose test series to Ireland

Senior Scotland women lost all three test matches against Ireland this week in Dublin.

A team featuring five new senior caps and only five players from the Glasgow 2014 squad the first two matches were tightly contested with Ireland getting the better of them in the third.

The first match the young Scots lost out to a last minute goal in the dying seconds to finish 1-0. The following day it was end to end with a Nikki Kidd drag flick special to score the scots lone goal, sadly losing 2-1 in the final quarter. The final game saw the scots lose 4-0 in front of a strong crowd filled with Irish School children.

Head coach Gordon Shepherd couldn’t be more positive about how his side performaned and how they have developed over the past month; ‘It has been two really positive camps, it was a young team with 8 new caps but I expected the games against Ireland to be tougher. They are a solid team preparing for the World League, only missing 1 from their regular line up.’

‘The senior women performed well but let in some sloppy goals in the final match, which the score line didn’t reflect at how hard the players worked.’

‘I am delighted at the whole team especially the juniors who have worked really hard and showing great enthusiasm.’

‘The regular seniors really relished the opportunity to help pass on knowledge and work with the up and coming youngsters as they know it will help develop the team as a whole. It has been a really positive experience and a great environment to work in.’

‘The next stage for the women is strength and conditioning sessions throughout the winter and the New Year before a warm weather training camp against Germany.’

Can India make it three from three?

As a busy hockey year draws to a close, India's head coach hopes youth and experience will excite the home crowd

Terry Walsh has been the head coach of India for just under two years and recent medal-winning performances at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games – including the first gold medal for India in 16 years – has made the affable Australian very popular among Indian hockey fans.

When he took the job on in 2013, the former Australian centre forward and highly regarded coach of teams such as the Netherlands, Malaysia and Australia, said he was humbled to be offered the position.

Certainly India has a proud tradition of hockey success, but the past few years have proved barren when it comes to medals. A silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and that gold medal, won following a victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, at the Asian Games has reignited India’s love affair with the sport and their belief in the national side. The victory at the Asian Games has the added bonus of securing India’s place at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Champions Trophy comes at the end of what Walsh describes as a busy year for any player or coach connected to the India team. The hockey calendar began with the Hockey World League Finals, then the Hockey World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, as well as other test series and international tournaments throughout the year.

“But,” says Walsh, “such constant exposure is vital for the continued development of the team. The players needs every exposure possible at the highest level. We are looking at playing as many games with our squad as we can manage, as the opportunities to be involved in tournaments or test series of quality must be utilised wherever possible.”

And of course, there will be the added pressure of vociferous home crowds at this year’s men’s Champions Trophy, which is being held at Bhubaneswar, India. Will that be a negative or a positive factor for the Indian players?

“No doubt there will be expectations from the crowds,” said Walsh. “However the task for the team is to stay with the game structures and strategies. No doubt there will be a clash of passion and emotions, but that’s half the challenge.”

Walsh’s calm presence and strategic hockey brain has proven crucial to India’s re-emergence as a winning force on the global stage. The team has always been recognised for the audacious talent of its players, but the problem historically lay with the lack of structure and discipline when things got difficult. Walsh’s coaching constantly reinforces the need for structure. Combine this with the fact that many of the Indian players now play with and against players from other countries in events such as the India Hockey League or through contracts with European clubs, and suddenly you have team of players with more structure in their game and more physicality to their play.

The Indian team for the Champions Trophy will be a mix of established players playing alongside a few who are, in Walsh’s words, “being blooded at this level”. The head coach says: “This team is relatively young and we have to provide opportunities to play wherever possible. Along with seeing some of the present team grow on the international scene, a new face may include Lalit Upadhyay.”

With their berth at the 2016 Olympics booked and two medals already won this year, things are definitely looking rosier for Indian hockey. What has brought about the changes? Walsh stresses the importance of depth within the ranks. “The whole system is improving at both senior and junior levels. There is a better structure and an understanding of the importance of a good physical base of preparation. These aspects have contributed to a growth in confidence levels.”

Terengganu hire Lissek as consultant

By Aftar Singh

Former national coach Paul Lissek has been hired as a consultant for Terengganu.

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to lift the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) Premier Division title.

The East Coast team hired former national coach Paul Lissek as a consultant last week to help them nail their first-ever title since the league’s inception in 1987.

Terengganu coach Sarjit Singh said the German was roped in due to his vast experience and ability to improve the team’s structure.

“He is one of the top coaches in the world. I will also be able to learn a lot from him to further improve my coaching techniques.

“With his guidance, I am confident Terengganu will play better in every match and end our title drought in the MHL,” added the former national skipper.

The bespectacled Lissek was the Malaysian national coach from 2000-2004. He is now a consultant with the South Korean men’s national team.

The 67-year-old Lissek arrived from Seoul on Tuesday. The five South Korean national players, who will feature for Terengganu in the MHL, arrived on Wednesday. They are penalty corner specialist Jang Jong-hyu, Bae Jeong-seok, Seo Jong-ho and brothers Kang Moon-kweon and Kang Moon-kyu.

Both Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) have maximum points from two matches, but the East Coast side lead the six-team league with a better goal difference.

Terengganu kicked off their campaign by hammering Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) 7-0. In the next match, they edged former champions Tenaga Nasional 2-1. Terengganu forward Faisal Saari is the league’s top scorer with six goals.

They will play two matches this weekend against Maybank on Friday and KLHC on Sunday.

Sarjit, the former national coach, is confident the five Koreans will combine well with the local players despite spending only two days of training with the team.

“We will take one match at a time. We hope to see Jong-hyu delivering goals from penalty corners.

“Our aim is to secure two good results this weekend to motivate and boost our chances of winning the league title,” said Sarjit.
