India outplay Spain 4-2 to win 3-match hockey series 2-1

TERRASSA (Spain): Riding on forward Ramandeep Singh's two spectacular goals, that too within a minute, India outplayed Spain 4-2 in the third and last match of the European Tour to win the three-game series 2-1.

The first quarter started with a brisk pace as both the teams competed to dominate in the early stage of the game. After a barrage of attacks in the opening minutes, Spain managed to earn a penalty corner but an alerted PR Sreejesh kept the ball away from the net.

Indian forwards counter-attacked in the next moment and kept on pressing for goals but did not find enough space against a formidable Spanish defence. After an intense tussle from both sides, the first quarter did not see any goal as the teams finished 0-0.

The second quarter commenced with the same intensity, but this time both India and Spain changed their tactics and started playing the long ball game. Chinglensana Singh penetrated the Spanish circle twice, but failed to convert the attempts in goals.

The Indians however earned a penalty corner in the 24th minute, which was perfectly converted into the first goal by drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh and helped his team to take an early lead of 1-0.

However, Spanish team struck back in the next minute (25th) as Ricardo Santana dribbled past the India defenders and scored the equaliser for his team. After the goal, both the teams played defensive game for a few minutes and finished the quarter at 1-1 score-line.

In the third quarter, both the teams entered the field with different strategies and game-plans to tackle each other. The Indian forwards tested the Spanish defence again and attacked from all sides. Against the run of play, the Indian defenders fouled on the Spanish striker which resulted in penalty corner in favour of Spain.

However, Sreejesh continued his good form to keep the score at 1-1. The Spanish team tried to slow down the Indian pace but the Indian players attacked relentlessly to put pressure on their opponents. In the last few minutes, India earned a penalty corner but this time Rupinder Pal's flick went wide of the post.

In the 45th minute, Akashdeep Singh sneaked into the Spanish circle and managed to dribble-past defenders before hitting the ball in the goal box for another lead. The third quarter finished at 2-1 score in favour of India.

In the fourth quarter, the Spain put an extra player in their attacking line-up to score goals and equalise the score-card. The Spanish players attacked the Indian defence more fiercely but they faced India's strong defence line, who denied their attacks. After a few attempts, Spain equalled the score 2-2 in the 49thminute with a field goal scored by Xavier Lleonart.

After conceding the goal, India counter-attacked the very next minute and looked for more opportunities. Banking on the long ball passes from teammates, Ramandeep managed to sneak into the Spanish defence in the 50th minute and scored the third goal for his team. Moments later, he kept his cool to score another goal in the 50th minute, which gave India a 4-2 lead.

Spain got a chance to come-back in the dying moments of the game but Sreejesh stood up as a wall to deny the Spanish side again. India, after losing the first game and came back strongly in the final two, finished the European Tour on a high.

Ireland men look to take Hockey World League form into EuroHockey Championships

Hockey World League form puts Ireland in confident mood ahead of EuroHockey Championships

Ireland men head into the Unibet EuroHockey Championships 2015 in London next week hoping to improve upon their good form witnessed at the Hockey World League (HWL) Semi-Final in Antwerp, Belgium earlier this summer.

Ireland’s ‘Green Machine’ will be drawing upon the positives taken from their fifth place finish at that event as they bid to win the European title for the first time in their history and in doing so gain automatic qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In Antwerp, Ireland recorded wins against Pakistan and Malaysia, both ranked above Ireland in the FIH world rankings.

A 6-0 win against China, a draw against world number five ranked Great Britain (competing as England during the EuroHockey Championships) and a narrow loss to the hosts Belgium, ranked fourth in the world, will provide them with further confidence as they head to London.

Four of the world’s top five teams will be competing in the EuroHockey Championships. However, the squad have faced Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, the three highest ranked teams in Europe, as part of their preparations in recent months.

Ireland is placed in Group B along with Germany, ranked third in the world, Belgium, ranked fourth, and France, ranked 17 in the world.

Ireland Head Coach Craig Fulton has named an experienced team, with Eugene Magee and Ronan Gormley having over 400 caps between them.

The squad is much the same to that which secured fifth place in Antwerp, with three changes to the squad which includes the addition of Michael Robson, Mathew Bell and Jonny Bruton.

Discussing the selection and tournament, Coach Craig Fulton said: “It is a strong squad and there is plenty of belief and confidence in the group going into the Europeans on the back of good performances in Belgium. At the same time we are well aware of the challenge that lies ahead against the quality opposition at the tournament. Our goal is simple: to finish as high as we possibly can.”

Ireland men: Mathew Bell-Banbridge;Jonny Bruton-Three Rock;Peter Caruth-Monkstown; Chris Cargo-Racing; Mitch Darling-Three Rock; David Fitzgerald-Monkstown; Paul Gleghorne-Lisnagarvey; Kyle Good-Dragons; Ronan Gormley-Krefeld; Conor Harte-Racing; David Harte-Kampong; John Jackson-Reading; Eugene Magee-Banbridge; Shane O’Donoghue-Dragons; Michael Robson-Annadale; Kirk Shimmins-UCD; Alan Sothern-Racing; Michael Watt-Surbiton.

HIL: UP Wizards retains 5 players

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Wizards today informed the board of Hockey India League on its decision to retain 5 players, while releasing the rest of the squad. The decision was taken by the franchisee post a detailed analysis of the entire team and each one’s contribution in the last few seasons. The franchisee has decided to retain the flamboyant and strong Indian wall - PR Sreejesh, one of the most dreaded drag flickers in the arena of hockey – VR Ragthunath along with the fast and quick forward – Ramandeep Singh. Apart from the Indian trio, Uttar Pradesh Wizards decided to hold back the versatile midfielder – Eddie Ockenden as well as Jolie Wouter who with his penalty corner conversion abilities will be a huge boost to VR Raghunath and the team.

Uttar Pradesh Wizards proved to be a formidable team in the last three seasons as they gave a tough time to its opponents on the field. With PR Sreejesh joining the team last season, it proved to be a huge motivation for the entire squad as the defence got strengthened with him under the bar. He went on to be regarded as the big buy for the franchisee as he made crucial saves which left the opponents frustrated on many a occasion. He was equally supported by the strong defence line which included the names of VR Raghunath and Jolie Wouter, who on their part did not give easy access to the opponents when tried to enter their D.

VR Raghunath further strengthened Sreejesh’s efforts as he effortlessly cashed on the important penalty corners, which helped put the pressure on the opponents. Raghunath has to his credit 8 penalty corners last season, next only to Ashley Jackson and Sandeep Singh, featuring his name in the top goal scorers list. Jolie Wouter, on the other hand, with his defensive skills, was a name to reckon with last year as he knew how to push the opponents back by cleanly taking possession of the ball.

Ramandeep Singh who was bought by the franchisee ahead of the second season of Hockey India League has proved himself to be a vital member since. He is known for his ability to enter the D by breaking the defence chain and which helped his team create the important scoring opportunities. Last season itself apart from playing his role in the team with élan, Ramandeep even has 4 impressive field goals scored during important matches. Lastly, Eddie Ockenden who captained the team on few occasions last year, did a splendid job by leading from the front. He at his midfield position not only supported the strikers, thereby making the attack stronger he even was a key figure at defence line by giving equal support there.

Shri Abhijit Sarkar Director Sahara Adventure Sports Limited said “The choice of holding back Sreejesh and VR Raghunath was easy because while one is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world today, the other one of the best drag flickers. So retaining them was the easiest choice for us. Apart from them Ramandeep was the next choice keeping in mind his skills as an attacker and the manner in which he cleverly breaks the opponents defence is amazing. Within the foreigners Edward Ockenden and Jolie Wouter have been retained keeping in mind the value that they add to any team line-up on any given day”.

Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh said “It will be my honour to continue representing Uttar Pradesh Wizards. I am happy to be retained and from here I am looking forward to the upcoming edition as the excitement will go a notch higher. With so much of shuffling in each team it will bring a fresh challenge which will be to know each other and deliver as a unit. But this will be an experience in itself as you will get to play with newer players and in a way learning newer skills from each other. With Raghunath and Jolie continuing to hold the defence with me will help, as we understand our style of play and which we will mould with the new members that are due to come in.”

Who will stop Kenya in hockey?

Sinyolo Girls, Kerugoya lead title assault in Rwanda

Kenya’s hockey representatives to the Brookside East African Secondary Schools Games will be seeking to maintain the status quo in the regional games which get underway in Huye, Rwanda this Sunday.

Kenya swept all the medals in both the boys’ and girls’ categories last year and will be out to ensure they repeat their exploits during the week-long tourney.

Holders Sinyolo Girls from Lake Region will lead national champions Trans-Nzoia Mixed from Nzoia Region and former East African champions Kerugoya Girls from Aberdare Region in a three-pronged assault for the medals.

Trans-Nzoia, who shocked many by winning the national title on their debut, will be aiming to complete the double in Rwanda. The competition will be played in a round robin format of six teams with Uganda’s Old Kampala, City High and Kakungulu Memorial making the other list of participants.

Sinyolo will take on Trans-Nzoia in their opening match in an all-Kenyan affair and a repeat of this year’s national final which the latter won 1-0.

Trans-Nzoia coach Joseph Onyango is however not putting pressure on his charges who have already surpassed expectations but called on them to make more history.

“No one expected us to triumph in Nakuru but we made it. But now the focus is on us and we want to put in a good performance in Rwanda,” Onyango said.

The match could as well determine who among the two will claim this year’s title. Kerugoya will open their account against City High as they seek to reclaim the regional title.

KAMUSINGA OUT

In the boys’ category, champions Friends School Kamusinga will not defend their title and Kenya’s hopes lie with national champions Narok Boys, runners-up St Antony’s and Lenana School.

Narok, who finished third in last year’s edition in Dar es Salaam, will look to better that performance and clinch their maiden title and extend the country’s dominance in the discipline. Just like girls’ hockey, the boys’ event will also be a two-nation affair with Ugandan teams standing in Kenya’s path to glory.

Narok will be up against Ntare School in their opener while St Anthony’s take on compatriots Lenana School while the last round robin match on the opening day will see St Charles Kasese up against St Mary’s Kisubi.

Narok Coach Stephen Ole Kenga believes his charges have matured and will mount a serious challenge on the title especially with the absence of their perennial rivals Kamusinga.

“We have learnt from our mistakes from last year and I can assure you we will fight to ensure we return with the title home,” the tactician said.

Both boys' and girls' hockey matches will be played at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC) South grounds in Huye.

New turf unites Poverty Bay

2015 was a year of firsts for Poverty Bay Hockey. They opened their first water-based hockey turf, ran their first school and club competitions on turf, and hosted their first ever international when the Black Sticks Women played a double header against Argentina in April.

It’s a pretty impressive list of achievements for one of the country’s smallest hockey associations, but what the new turf at Gisborne’s Harry Barker Reserve did for this geographically challenged region goes well beyond a list of firsts.

From the kids who watched their Black Sticks heroes from the roofs of cars to the talented youngster from Tolaga Bay who can now play in tournaments on their home turf rather than travel miles to the bigger smokes – this new sporting facility has been about bringing a community together through sport.

“It was huge” says Poverty Bay Hockey Regional Development Manager Wade Manson when he reflects on the Black Sticks matches which the community decided from day one would be free to attend. It obviously worked with about 2500 in attendance over the two days.

“The kids absolutely loved it. They got to meet their heroes right here on their doorstep.

“And it helped us immensely with numbers for the season.”

Manson says having the new turf has opened the door for a lot more children to play hockey.

“Because we have hockey on the turf every day now, you get kids playing hockey in the week and netball, soccer and rugby on the weekends. They’re loving it.”

Everyone from Mahia to Tolaga Bay has been supportive of the new facility (a $1.7 million turf and $200,000 lights) says Manson, and they see the benefits of being able to host regional and national tournaments.

“Our players normally have to travel a long way to tournaments so for the first time we can host teams here. We’ve always been a region trying to punch above our weight but we’ve been limited in terms of what we could do.”

Manson says the new facility provides a pathway for local players without having to leave the region.

“They have a much better chance now with the facilities and programmes in place. My dream would be to have a Black Stick from Gisborne – that’s the ultimate goal.”

Clemons runs for reconciliation

Tristan Clemons to run 12km in goalkeeping gear for ICEA

On the 30th August 2015, thousands of runners from around the state will be taking part in the Western Australian City2Surf event. This multi-level event, which includes 4km, 12km, half-marathon and marathon races, is held annually in Perth.

ICEA had announced that this year, Australian hockey player and long time ICEA supporter, Tristan Clemons, will take on the 12km race as apart of the Run4Reconcilliation team in his goalkeeping kit if he is able to raise $1200 for the ICEA foundation.

“ICEA is an organisation that I am stoked to be able to help out in anyway I can as I really believe in their message and what they stand for. ICEA for me is all about creating experiences for young people to help promote the message of reconciliation in Australia.”

In preparation for the big race, Tristan has been training hard in a conditioning phase with the Kookaburras but admits he hasn’t done much long distance running in the pads. “At the moment I’m training about 10 sessions a week, so I am feeling pretty good, but the majority of these sessions are hockey or gym focussed. I will definitely need to get out and do a few runs in the pads in preparation for 12km’s as that’s a mighty long way in the goalie kit!” explained Clemons.

Tristan, away from the hockey field is a research scientist at the University of Western Australia where he works in close conjunction with the Fiona Wood Foundation’s research unit investigating novel treatments to improve wound healing and scarring. “I am privileged to be able to work in science and on problems I am really passionate about, obviously it makes things busy with my hockey commitments but I am fortunate that my supervisors and coaches alike understand the importance of both these pursuits, and I have a lot of support.”

Tristan has been involved with ICEA for a number of years, this year he swam to Rottnest in a duo as apart of the ICEA Rotto Swim Team, has helped raise funds and has witnessed first hand the good work ICEA does in the north west Kimberley. “I am a long time friend of Lockie Cooke the founder of ICEA and when you see his passion it is hard not to get caught up and help out where I can. Running the City2surf this year in the Run4Rec team is me just doing my bit for a great organisation with great people and a great message.”

The ICEA (Indigenous Communities Education & Awareness) Foundation is a youth-run not-for-profit organisation. To realise ICEA’s vision of Reconciliation inspired by young people, its programs engage young Indigenous and non-Indigenous Western Australians - throughout high schools across the state, to Perth beaches, to remote regions of the Kimberley – to create positive shared experiences, build enduring relationships and promote cultural understanding.

The funds raised in Tristan’s campaign will go towards sponsoring a cultural event at the ICEA Classic on the 12th September 2015. Now in its sixth year, the Classic is an annual celebration of Indigenous and surfing culture, this year expecting to attract over 7000 people. Only two weeks after the Run 4 Reconciliation, the ICEA Classic is a great follow up event for individuals and groups to continue growing their understanding of reconciliation after taking part in the Run 4 Reconciliation team.
