Spotlight on: Germany women

2013 European champions Germany – known as Die Danas – are always serious title contenders in every event in which they compete, something that will be no different in Rosario.

The current group is young, exciting and blessed with a number of exceptionally talented individuals. Although Germany’s squad for the Argentina Hockey World League Final had yet to be announced at the time of writing, Head Coach Jamilon Mülders has plenty of world class players available for selection including versatile midfielders Janne Müller-Wieland and Katharina Otte, as well as inspirational defenders Julia Müller and Nina Hasselmann.

Müller, Otte and Müller-Wieland are key figures of the leadership group implemented by Head Coach Mülders, with Hannah Krüger, Anne Schröder, Luisa Steindor and Franzisca Hauke – younger sister of Germany men’s superstar Tobias Hauke – also being members.

The 2004 Olympic champions took the bronze medal at the Unibet EuroHockey Championship 2015 in London over the summer, and will once again be targeting a podium finish in Rosario as they build towards next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

Nickname: Die Danas

Key player: Julia Müller. An outstanding defender with masses of world level experience, Müller is one of the most consistently excellent performers for Die Danas. She is is a double Olympian, having competed at the Beijing 2008 (4th) and London 2012 (7th) Games, and played a pivotal role in Germany’s gold medal success at the TriFinance EuroHockey Nations Championship in 2013.

Notable honours
Olympic Gold medallists (2004)
2x Olympic Silver medallists (1984, 1992)
World Cup Gold medallists (1976, 1981)
2x EuroHockey Nations Champions (2007, 2013)
Champions Trophy Gold medallists (2006).
3rd place – Valencia Hockey World League Semi-Final (2015)
Bronze medallists – Unibet EuroHockey Championships (2015)

Additional information: Germany booked their ticket to the Argentina Hockey World League Final with a third place finish at the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Valencia, where they defeated Argentina’s Las Leonas in a shoot-out. It is Germany’s second consecutive appearance in the Hockey World League Final, having competed in the 2012-13 Final where they finished in seventh place. Despite that disappointment, their stunning form in qualifying for that event – and subsequently at the Rabobank Hockey World Cup 2014 – certainly grabbed everyone’s attention. They achieved a remarkable first place finish at the Rabobank Hockey World League Semi-Final, defeating host nation and world number one Netherlands, the team that eventually went on to win the inaugural Hockey World League title.

The league leaders fell behind early to a goal from Claire Thomas and were further adrift when Aileen Davis netted for Clifton early in the second half.

But Sanders came to the rescue, hitting three goals in seven minutes and a fourth at the last minute to keep the hosts two points clear.

Surbiton stay second after they won 5-0 away at Holcombe thanks to goals from Giselle Ansley, Charlotte Calnan, Abi Robinson and two from Jo Hunter to leave Holcombe fifth.

Reading needed three second half goals from Rose Winter, Kate Richardson-Walsh and Sophie Shakespeare to see off Bowdon Hightown 3-0 and record their first league win of the season.

Elsewhere, Alice Brown’s late goal was enough to see off East Grinstead as Canterbury won 1-0. The result keeps Canterbury in touch at the top of the table, sitting in third.

Investec Conference North

Wakefield remain at the head of the Investec Conference North table after a 4-2 victory over Belper. Gwen Smith, Hannah Norman, Rosie Tootell and Heather Stafford scored the goals to claim another three points.

Slough continue to dominate the Investec Conference East and they were in fantastic form as they scored nine without reply against Chelmsford. Amy Sheehan was instrumental in the win, scoring a hat-trick.

Cambridge City couldn’t keep the pressure up at the top as they played out a 2-2 draw with Harleston Magpies. Cambridge were 2-1 down with the clock running down but a penalty stroke converted in the 66th minute by Vicki Franks handed them a point.

Scorpions sting Falcons to recapture number two spot

Strathmore University Scorpions moved back into second place in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women’s national league after thrashing Daystar University Falcons 5-1 in a league match played at City Park Stadium, Nairobi on Saturday.

In another match played at the same venue, Daystar beat University of Nairobi 1-0 in a men’s national league match.

Two goals from Mitchelle Achieng set last season’s runners-up on their way while Gilly Okumu, Angela Mayaka and Linda Ayodi also got their names on the scoresheet. Naomi Gichuhi got a consolation goal for Falcons but it was too late.

Scorpions manager Fred Oracha included the trio of skipper Carol Njoki, Yvonne Karanja and Gilly Okumu in the line-up following their exploits with the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations cum 2016 Olympic qualifiers last month. The trio was instrumental in the team’s victory and the university side’s good run. Scorpions were 8-0 winners in the reverse fixture played in the first leg.

Scorpions wasted no time attacking from the onset and were ahead after two minutes with their first chance of the game when Achieng scored a field goal after firing past Daystar keeper Alice Wanjiru, having been put through by Karanja.

Okumu was a handful to the Falcons defence with her marauding runs and link-up with winger Yvonne Karanja, doubling the lead in the 13th minute with a brilliant field goal.

This link-up play continued to trouble the Daystar defence as the half went along with only Wanjiru’s heroics in goal keeping Scorpions at bay.

Achieng was however not to be denied as she sounded the board after 21 minutes, set up by Karanja to find the bottom left corner for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Scorpions continued to attack and defender Angela Mayaka got her name on the scoresheet in the 49th minute after she finished off a Karanja short corner.

Falcons created chances and were rewarded with a consolation goal three minutes to time when Naomi Gichuhi escaped from her marker to score past Scorpions keeper Dorothy Mutuku who, until this point, had been a spectator in the match.

Linda Ayodi scored a beauty a minute to full time with a reverse back stick goal to condemn Daystar to their seventh defeat of the season.

“The score does not reflect the number of chances we created in this match but we are glad we got the three points and we’ll now focus on our next match,” Oracha said.
