KARACHI: Two hat-tricks — one each by M. Imran and Kashif Jawwad — for their respective teams highlighted proceedings of the third day in the 62nd National Hockey Championship at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium on Sunday.

Imran scored three goals including one off penalty corner, in the 13th, 37th and 40th minutes as Pakistan Steel Mills whipped Customs 5-3 to register second straight victory in the pool B.

They have beaten Islamabad 5-0 in their group opener on Saturday.

Sultan Ashraf and Majid Khan netted one goal apiece to complete the team’s tally.

Customs, once considered a force to be reckoned with, made comeback in the match after conceding the opening goal when M. Qasim drew level two minutes later.

Customs again reduced the deficit to 3-4 when Junaid Manzoor and M. Mateen netted back-to-back goals in the 52nd and 53rd minutes but to no avail.

In the next match, Jawwad caught the eye as Port Qasim Authority (PQA) continued their winning spree bulldozing Sindh 7-0 in the group A encounter.

The PQA had blanked Higher Education Commission (HEC) 5-0 the other day.

Jawwad conjured up three goals in-a-row in the ninth, 21st and 24th minutes to register hat-trick, second of the day and fifth of the event so far.

Shakeel Abbasi scored twice while Nasir Shehzad and M. Atif netted once for the winners.

Sindh completely failed to match their opponents and remained at the receiving end for most of the time.

At the outset, reigning national champions PIA opened their account by getting the better of Railways 4-1 in the pool A clash with all the goals coming in the last two quarters.

Ihsanullah and M. Zubair shared four goals amongst themselves for the winners with the formers goals coming off penalty corners.

Khalid Ahmed scored the lone goal for the losers.

Formidable National Bank of Pakistan survived a scare when they humbled fighting Navy 4-2 in the pool A match.

The sailors shocked the bankers when Asad Aziz beat rival goal keeper on rebound off their first PC in the 21st minute.

Earlier, the bankers objected to the umpires decision of allowing PC and the matter was referred to the video referral analyst who allowed it.

The bankers retaliated and managed to score four goals – two coming off Bilal Qadir in 25th and 33rd minutes and one each through Akhtar Ali and Dilber Hasan in the 52nd and 54th minutes.

Earlier, when 1-2 down, the sailors made a couple of dangerous moves but failed to capitalise on them.

However, before the final hooter, they claimed their second PC in the 59th minute and Mohsin Sabir cashed it to reduce the deficit 2-4.

Meanwhile, rich tributes were paid to the late Sindh minister for sports Dr Mohammad Ali Shah with whose efforts the synthetic turf has been laid down at the HCP Stadium besides the one at Islah-Dr M. A. Shah Academy and some in the interior of Sindh.

Monday’s fixtures: PAF v Balochistan at 9.30am; Punjab v SSGC at 11.30am; Army v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 1.30pm; PTV v Islamabad at 3.30pm.

Ibrahim appointed as hockey head coach

KARACHI: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), led by president Brig (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar and secretary Shahbaz Senior, appointed Olympian Qamar Ibrahim as the new head coach of the national side on Sunday.

Shahbaz revealed that Ibrahim was selected to train the team for next year’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. The camp for the Azlan Shah Cup will take place after the South Asian Games (SAG) scheduled to be held from February 4 to February 16, 2016.

Along with Ibrahim, Olympian Abdul Hanif Khan has been selected as the team manager, while Dr Yousuf Baig and Irfan Sheikh have been selected as team doctor and physical trainer respectively.

“We have selected Ibrahim to prepare the senior team for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup,” Shahbaz told The Express Tribune. “The entire team management has been finalised and the next step would be to select the squad.”

Ibrahim is currently serving as the tournament manager of the National Hockey Championship and Shahbaz believes that Ibrahim’s involvement in the national championship would be beneficial in picking the best players.

“The selectors and coaches are present at the ongoing championship and will consider players performance from here, which will result in the selection of the best squad,” added Shahbaz.

Earlier, the PHF had announced that former captain Muhammad Saqlain would serve as head coach for Pakistan Whites — Pakistan hockey’s A team — at SAG, and Shahbaz revealed that the players travelling to India as part of Pakistan Whites would also be selected from the ongoing national championship.

“Pakistan Whites will have players who have not participated in international events which will increase their exposure and give us more players to select the team from,” he added. “Players participating in the national championship will be given preference in the team selection.”

Ramnad boys learn latest European tricks in hockey

Hockey Academy Coach explains 50 of the tricks

D.J. Walter Scott

It was dream come true for the 150-odd local boys as they had the rare opportunity of learning the latest European techniques from Shiv Jagday, Hockey Academy Coach, International Hockey Federation (FIH), here on Sunday.

Mr. Jagday, who visited Chennai to coach coaches and physical education teachers from across Tamil Nadu from December 20 to 24, paid a two-day visit here.

He taught the latest techniques to the boys in the age group of 8 to 14 years, and 15 to 18 years at the Astro Turf hockey stadium at Seethakathi Sethupathi Sports Stadium complex on Saturday and Sunday.

Accompanied by former Olympian V.J. Philipps, Mr. Jagday focussed on all aspects of the game, from development of basic skills to the latest techniques adopted in turf courts, A. Chelladurai Abdullah, president of Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu, and secretary of District Hockey Association, said.

The court had been laid to international standards and had all the facilities to host international matches, Mr. Abdullah quoted Mr. Jagday as saying.

Mr. Jagday assured the association that he would recommend to Narinda Batra, president, Hockey India, to host Junior World Cup, scheduled for December next year, at the newly laid stadium.

‘Very much impressed’

“Mr. Jagday and Mr. Philipps were very impressed with the facilities and the interest shown by the boys and spent the two days with the boys, cutting short their sightseeing programmes,” Kizhavan Sethupathy, joint secretary of the association, said.

Mr. Jagday taught the boys 50 techniques, Mr. Abdullah said.

Mr. Phillip, who had played for the country for 12 years, said, “The stadium brought back memories of my matches played in Holland and Germany,” he told The Hindu .

Malaysian age-group hockey tournaments to run in different formats next year

by S. Ramaguru

KUALA LUMPUR: Next year’s age-group hockey tournaments – for boys and girls – will cease to be an 11-a-side affair.

The national Under-14 championships will now be a five-a-side event while the Under-16 tournament will be staged under the nine-a-side format.

Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) competitions committee chairman George Koshy said changing to the two formats would provide a bigger pool of players for the country.

“We need to change the Under-14 championships so that a 5s tournament can be introduced in Malaysia on a larger scale. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) have already started the Hockey 5s tournament in a big way and the Youth Olympics is based on this concept.

“Even the Asian qualifiers for the Youth Olympics have been changed to Hockey 5s.”

“So we need to look at forming a team that is used to the 5s format.

“The states can now field two teams, giving us a bigger pool of players,” he added.

George said the game would also be more interesting to the fans.

“The game is faster in both the five-a-side and nine-a-side formats. We feel that once the states start using the system we can move forward at national level.”

The MHC have tentatively scheduled the Under-16 tournament to be held in March while the Under-14 tournament is scheduled for November.
