Fiji win men's and women's tournaments at FIH Hockey World League Round 1 event

By Liam Morgan

Hosts Fiji secured the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey World League Round 1 event on home soil in Suva.

The victories for the Fijian sides guarantees their participation at the Round 2 competition in Kuala Lumpur in January, where they will be hoping to book their place at the 2017 Hockey World Cup.

Fiji’s men, who won gold at the Pacific Games in Port Moresby last year, finished with an unbeaten record and earned a dominant 8-1 victory over Papua New Guinea on the final day.

Krristofer Mock netted a hat-trick, with Leevan Dutta and Hector Smith Jnr each bagging a brace.

Martin Fong also got on the scoresheet for Fiji, while Jersey Dusty got Papua New Guinea’s consolation goal.

Fiji’s 5-2 success over Vanuatu on the penultimate day of action ensured they wrapped up the title ahead of the last round of matches at the event, played using the shorter Hockey 5s format.

Vanuatu, whose only defeat during the tournament was to the eventual winners, took home the silver medal and ended with a 7-1 thrashing of Tonga.

Papua New Guinea clung on to third place on the standings despite the heavy loss at the hands of Fiji.

The home nation’s women’s team were also in formidable form as they claimed victory in all six of their matches.

They ended their campaign in some style by annihilating Tonga 12-0 as Tiara Dutta led the scoring with five goals.

Maxine Browne chipped in with a hat-trick, while Catherine Thaggard, Lora Bakulidi, Lala Ravatu and Asinate Blake also found the net during a comprehensive outing for the hosts.

Papua New Guinea clinched second spot ahead of the Solomon Islands, with Tonga finishing rock bottom having suffered defeat in all six of their contests.

“It is a great feeling when you achieve your goals, and our goal was to win the women's division and to qualify for Round 2,” Fiji women’s coach Alison Southey told the Fiji Times.

“But there will be trials again for the side that travels for Round 2.

"The girls will have to continue with their training and more girls will join the side.”

THE Fiji men's hockey is focused on their match against Papua New Guinea today as the winner of the match will qualify for round 2 of the World League tournament

Coach Hector Smith Sr said the side's only goal now was to put on a killer performance to qualify for Round 2 in Kuala Lumpur.

"On day one we didn't play that well. There are three survivors from the Pacific Games, so we are introducing some young players," Smith said.

He was impressed with how the Vanuatu men's team played against them. Fiji won 5-2, but Vanuatu was a better team, he said.

"I am impressed with the development of the game in Vanuatu. All the teams especially in the men's competition it has really really stepped up, Fiji has always been having it our way all this time and we are really happy that the other countries have decided that they will do something about it this time," Smith said.

He said the purpose of the competition was to lift the standard of hockey at regional level, and that was happening with teams such as Solomon Islands and Vanuatu coming out strongly during the competition.

"Vanuatu proved too much for us, they were really good. I was really impressed with how they played today. Both the men's and women's team played really well," Smith said.

"They were fitter than us, Vanuatu has a chance to topple us in the gold medal play off on Saturday."

Fiji plays another two games today, one will be against PNG as a qualifying match and the next one will be against Vanuatu in the gold medal play off

Fiji men's team looks for Round 2 sponsor

Mere Naleba

FIJI men's hockey team has now gone past the first hurdle which is to win in the qualifying match of round one competition of the FIH World League series.

While the team has now advanced to round two of the competition which will be played in Bangladesh, India in January, the side's main obstacle now is to find sponsors and donors who can assist in raising funds to actually see the side travelling to India.

Men's coach Hector Smith Sr said the first phase is now over with the side qualifying for round two, the second phase now is trying and get the team across to India.

"If we do go, if we get support then we will go, we'll be very grateful but if we don't go we did the work to be able to qualify to go, if we can't make it that's reality we will also accept it," Smith said.

"First of all there are two things that we will have to prepare for, one is to look for sponsors to try and get there, so that we can get logistics out of the way."

Smith said the second part was to get the players to be much fitter than what they had displayed during the round one competition.

"For hockey it is a really expensive exercise because when you stay away from international matches, the ranking go down, but part of the process is when you want to be with the big boys then you have to have backing too," Smith said.

Ireland Earn 1-1 Draw With New Zealand

Shane O’Donoghue scored Ireland's goal

A match filled with a plethora of penalty corners only yielded 2 goals as below par finishing from New Zealand earned Ireland a draw with the world number 8.

The Green Machine started the brighter and earned their first penalty corner in the opening 2 minutes; the shot and rebound were well saved but it was a marker of things to come. Another penalty corner minutes later offered Shane O’Donoghue the chance to drag flick the ball into Devon Manchester’s net and he made no mistake, giving Ireland the lead in the 6th minute.

The Blacksticks penalty corner count ran well into double digits but a combination of composed defense and inaccurate finishing meant their conversion rate was kept at nil. However David Harte was deemed to have fouled an attacker and a penalty stroke, courtesy of Shea McAleese, meant the teams went into half time tied 1-1.

The script didn’t change dramatically in the second half as New Zealand continued to increase their penalty corner count, often thanks to a pacey and agile midfield line that seemed to have the Irish on the back foot at times. However as per the first 30 minutes shots and passes fizzed across the face of goal or were ably dealt with by Harte. The final chance of the game fell to the Blacksticks with a penalty corner in the closing minute but Kyle Good was fast out of the blocks and the effort didn’t trouble Harte’s goal.

Ireland next face Germany tomorrow at 9am (GMT). Watch the match live here!

Black Sticks play out draw with Ireland

The Black Sticks Men have settled for a 1-1 draw with Ireland at the Six Nations tournament in Valencia.

A penalty stroke from Shea McAleese just out from halftime kept the Kiwis on level terms with Ireland, who opened the scoring with a Shane O’Donoghue field goal.

The Black Sticks created plenty of scoring opportunities along with a handful of penalty corners, but were unable to beat classy goalkeeper David Harte more than once.

Head coach Colin Batch said it was frustrating to be creating so many chances on attack but not able to convert them onto the scoreboard.

“We set ourselves a challenge for this game to start well and we didn’t do that allowing them to score early,” he said.

“We woke up after that and played well. Once again we created a lot of opportunities but we need to be able to get the job done and have something to show for it.

“The quality in our finishing is not quite there at the moment but we have the chance to finish the tournament well with what will be a tough game against Argentina.”

Ireland were dangerous on attack in the early stages and opened the scoring in the sixth minute when O’Donoghue sent a penalty corner flick into goal.

The Black Sticks regrouped following the goal and put together some impressive phases with the ball while also strengthening up on defence.

In the 28th minute Simon Child went on a promising run towards goal and had his legs taken out by goalkeeper Harte, with the umpire awarding a penalty stroke which McAleese calmly slotted.

The second half offered chances for both sides to break the deadlock, but defence reigned supreme in a goalless 30 minutes.

Devindar's 57th minute goal helps India hold Argentina at 6 Nations tournament

Valencia, 2 July 2016: India and Argentina played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their game today at the 6 Nations Invitational tournament.

An exciting first half started off slowly, as Argentina took control of the ball early in the first quarter, trying to carve inroads into the Indian defence. The opening goal would come seconds before the hooter, Matias Paredes netting it to give Argentina the lead going into the break.

Virtually from the restart, India carved the Argentina defence open with a sweeping move, that ended with Ramandeep fouled at the goalmouth with only the goalkeeper to beat. India were awarded a stroke, which Rupinder Pal Singh subsequently scored to draw the teams level.

Argentina hit back soon though, first through a PC conversion by Gonzalo Peillat and then via Lucas Vila’s field goal. Argentina went into halftime with a 3-1 lead in the game.

India rallied together in the second half and came out stronger, taking control of the midfield and not allowing Argentina possession in the centre of the park. Despite the early pressure though, their final pass wasn’t enough to break down the Argentina defence.

India had their first PC in the final minutes of the third quarter, but Rupinder Pal Singh's high flick was saved by the Argentine goalkeeper to ensure they went into the final break with their two-goal lead intact.

India had it all to do in the final quarter, and started off, again, in control, pushing the ball quickly within their ranks and causing Argentina problems in their circle. This time, they made the pressure count. After an exchange of passes on the right wing, the ball dropped to Danish Mujtaba in the circle. Under pressure, Danish managed to get the ball away towards Ramandeep, whose tap in cut the gap to one.

Galvanised by the goal, India threw on a slew of attackers and soon the trio of Ramandeep, Sunil and Akashdeep were causing Argentina problems in defence. Soon the pressure told, Devindar closed in behind the Argentina defence, to score a superb goal in the 57th minute to draw the two teams level.

Argentina had a PC denied by Sreejesh minutes later, before India, now in the ascendancy pushed to complete the come back and win the game. Argentina’s defence held on to ensure the teams split the honours.

India play Spain in their final game of the tour at 15:30 on 3rd July.

India lose to New Zealand in six-nation Invitational tournament, face Argentina next

Valencia: Indian men's hockey team lost 0-1 to New Zealand to slump to its its second defeat in the six-nation Invitational tournament and will now face the formidable Argentina in its penultimate round-robin match, in Valencia on Saturday.

New Zealand's Stephen Jenness scored the lone goal of the match in the 18th minute on Friday.

India had earlier lost 0-4 to Germany in their tournament opener before registering a fighting 2-1 win over Ireland in their next game.

India are now placed fourth in the points table with just three points from one win and two defeats. Olympic champions Germany and Argentina lead the chart with six points from two wins followed by Spain on three points from two games.

If India are to stay in the hunt for a place in the summit clash, Sardar Singh and his men have no option but to beat Argentina on Saturday.

Going by recent International Hockey Federation (FIH) rankings, India enjoy an edge over Argentina. By virtue of their runners-up finish in the Champions Trophy in London earlier in June, India leapfrogged to the fifth spot in the world rankings ahead of Belgium (6th) and Argentina (7th).

But it will be easier said than done as the Argentines are a tough nut to crask on the turf, which is clearly visible from their run in the tournament so far. The Indians will have to dish out a consistent performance and avoid making mistakes at the backline if they desire to emerge winners on Saturday.

India will finish their round robin campaign against Spain on Sunday.

The tournament is being held as a preparation for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.

Captain Betsy Omala scored five goals as champions Telkom Orange got their title defence with an emphatic 10-0 win over Kenyatta University's Titans as the 2016 Kenya Hockey Union season got underway on Saturday at the City Park Stadium, Nairobi.

Omala was in impressive form scoring twice as Orange took a commanding 4-0 at the break and added three more goals in the second half as the defending champions showed their intent of retaining their title.

Former Kenyan international Barbara Simiyu notched a brace while Maureen Okumu, Lilian Aura and Ann Juma all scored a goal apiece for Orange.
Omala praised her teammates for a dominant display warning other teams to expect a lethal Orange side.

“It is always important to get off to a winning start and we showed that today. We are looking to defend our title without conceding any goal,” Omala told Sunday Nation Sport.

Orange conceded only one goal last season as they cruised to a record 18th league crown without losing a match.

During Saturday’s encounter, Orange needed only four minutes to get on the score sheet as youngster Maureen Okumu finished off a well worked move firing past Titans keeper Celine Okumu.

Four minutes later, Orange made it two through Simiyu who danced her way past the Titans defence to fire a low shot past Ouma.

Titans were pinned in their won half as Orange continued to press forward for more goals.

Simiyu and Okumu all went close to adding to the tally but were thwarted by Okumu who pulled off double saves to deny the duo.

OMALA OPENS ACCOUNT

Orange’s pressure paid off in the 18th minute as another well worked moved ended with Omala finishing Lilian Aura’s cross. Two more goals were added before the halftime whistle as the Titans defence crumbled.

The students improved after the break and almost pulled a goal back early in the second half through forward Olympia Chepchumba whose shot was saved by Orange keeper Ruth Njoki.

Omalla, playing in an advanced role, was a constant thorn in the Titans defence and she scored two goals in three minutes.

Leading 7-0 after 55 minutes, Orange stand in coach Ruth Mbulo brought on Phanice Olunga and Georgina Lumumba for Caroline Guchu and Tracy Karanja. The goal fest continued with three more goals in the last 15 minutes in what was turning out to be a lop-sided encounter.

“We let in too many easy goals and we should have been more alert during the short corners. This is not how we wanted to start the season but we were up against a formidable side,” Titans coach Domnic Mutwol said.
