Holcombe were knocked off the top of the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division after being defeated 1-0 at home to East Grinstead.

Investec Women's Conference East

Sevenoaks made it five wins from five to stay top of the Investec Conference East, with a 6-1 win at Chelmsford.

Sarah Parkinson-Mills scored a hat trick with Hannah Coulson, Claire Pearson, Lora Symonds and Cerys Preston were all on target to ensure the hosts remain the only unbeaten side in the conference.

That came after previous leaders Olton and West Warwicks went down to their first defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss at Isca.

16-0! Telkom Orange humiliate Daystar Falcons to go top

Veteran striker Jackline Mwangi on Saturday scored five goals as champions Telkom Orange thrashed Daystar Falcons 16-0 in a lop-sided Kenya Hockey Union women's Premier League match at the City Park Stadium.

The win saw Orange leapfrog Strathmore Scorpions at the summit of the standings with three matches to the end of the season.

Kenyan internationals Maureen Okumu and Lillian Aura each grabbed hat-tricks as Orange handed the students a lesson in hockey.

Flavian Mutiva and evergreen striker Hellen Chemtai also sounded the board twice each with Barbara Simiyu scoring once in the one-sided encounter.

Orange assistant coach Josephine Ataro was delighted with her team's performance warning it will be difficult to wrestle the title from her side.

"I think this is by far our best performance this season. We were brilliant in attack, defence and totally dominated the proceedings," Ataro told Sunday Nation Sport.

"I think if we keep up with such results it is going to be difficult for any team to stop us from winning another title."

Ataro handed a start to third-choice keeper Alice Wanjiru and the rookie was barely troubled as Falcons failed to register any scoring opportunity or even win a penalty corner.

So dominant were the 18-time league champions that Ataro brought in a number of fringe players at halftime with her side 8-0 up.

Lucy Lichuma, Diane Wabwire and Fanice Olunga all made their debuts for the champions.

Orange were 7-0 up after 15 minutes with Okumu opening the scoring in the second minute after finishing off a sweeping move past Falcons keeper Esther Nyambura.

Two minutes later, Simiyu blasted home Flavia Mutiva's penalty corner to double her team's advantage.

Falcons's defence struggled to deal with the quick pace of Okumu, Aura and Mwangi's link up play.

Five more goals followed before the quarter hour mark as the Falcons defence crumbled as Orange toyed around with their opponents.

Okumu added a brilliant second while Aura and Mwangi also scored twice in the dominant spell by the eight-time African Club champions.

Orange did not relent in the second half and continued to attack in search of more goals. Mwangi scored three goals in a space of 10 minutes to underline her status as one of the lethal strikers in the league this season.

Mwangi, who was last season's top scorer, also set up three goals for her teammates to cap off an impressive display.

"We simply could not cope with their players and deservedly lost the match. We also showed them too much respect and they walked over us," Falcons coach Davis Odoyo said.

In another women's tie, Sliders drew 1-1 with Vikings at the same venue. June Barmasai gave Vikings the lead in the first half but Susan Muchai restored parity in the second half.

Champions Telkom Orange gave Daystar University a lesson in hockey with a 16-0 beating in a Kenya Hockey Union women’s league match played yesterday at City Park Stadium.

Veteran Jackline Mwangi proved that she is still good in what she does by scoring five goals as the 18-time champions recorded the highest score of the season.

The win saw Orange snatch the top spot from Strathmore Scorpions with three matches left this season.

Perhaps inspired by the return of coach Jos Openda who has been the driving force behind their success for over 18 years, the national queens dominated the match from the onset.

Fast-rising Maureen Okumu and Lilian Aura bagged a hat-trick each while Hellen Chemtai and Flavia Mutiva netted a brace each whereas Barbara Simiyu added a goal to the tally.

Openda, who returned after a long absence told Feverpitch his charges were playing well and adapting to the new system of play as they prepare to defend the African title.

“They played well today compared to the previous match. I am glad they are adapting to the new system of play I introduced recently because that is how I want them to play at the club championships,’’ Openda said.

He added that there is still room for improvement. “We have to defend the national title also and that can only be done if we keep winning convincingly.

In regard to the Africa title, we still have time to prepare well and I believe both titles are within our reach,’’ he said.

Maureen Okumu, an alumnus of East Africa and national champions Sinyolo Girls announced Orange’s intended win two minutes into play leaving Daystar goalie Esther Nyambura shocked.

Before Nyambura could put her house in order, Simiyu struck to make it two in the seventh minute.

Daystar struggled to keep up with the pace and steady attacks from Orange and conceded one goal after the other with no hopes of settling in the game. Okumu, Aura and Mwangi struck twice each to give Orange a 7-0 lead by the quarter-hour mark.

Chemtai added the eighth in the 31st minute to give the champions an 8-0 lead at the breather.

Orange were at it again in the second half doubling their score through Mutiva in the 40th and 66th minutes. Aura found the back of the net in the 47th minute while Mwangi scored three in the 48th, 59th and 68th.

Chemtai and Okumu completed their braces in the 55th and 65th minutes.

Alice Wanjiru, a third choice goalkeeper got her chance to start for the champions but was not tested as Daystar did not make any threats at Orange’s goal.

Together with Wanjiru Lucy Lichuma, Diane Barbwire and Fanice Olunga also made their debuts for Orange.

In another encounter at the same venue, Sliders played to a 1-1 draw against Vikings.

No. 10 Virginia downs No. 2 Syracuse in overtime

Virginia Athletics

No. 10 Virginia toppled ACC conference foe No. 2 Syracuse with a 1-0 overtime victory on Saturday. Virginia Athletics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 10 Virginia field hockey team (10-5, 3-2 ACC) earned a 1-0 overtime victory over No. 2 Syracuse (12-2, 4-2 ACC) on Saturday at University Hall Turf Field. Virginia Athletics

Senior midfielder Lucy Hyams scored the game-winning goal 4:30 into overtime. After a penalty corner injection, junior midfielder Tara Vittese controlled the ball at the top of the circle while Hyams cut into position in front of the goal. Vittese knocked a perfect pass toward Hyams who took the shot on target to give the Cavaliers the victory over the defending national champions.

“We knew we needed to bring our A-game for Syracuse, and I feel we absolutely did that,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “We played extremely patiently. We just kept attacking the open spaces. In overtime, there was even more room, and we kept up the attack. Defensively, the backfield of Carrera Lucas, Dominique van Slooten and Anzel Viljoen came up with stop after stop. It was nice to get a top-five win after so many close games this season.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Carrera Lucas, who improved to 8-3 on the season, logged her fourth shutout of the year, making seven saves in goal. Senior Emily Faught had her third defensive save of the season.

The two teams played a balanced first half with defense dominating play as the two teams took a combined four shots before halftime. After the break, the Orange began a more aggressive attack on goal, firing off 12 shots, with Lucas making all seven of her saves in the second period. Virginia took four shots in the second half.

In overtime, Syracuse had several possessions, but was not able to take a shot. The Cavaliers’ first chance to score came on a shot by senior Caleigh Foust two-and-a-half minutes into extra time, with Nijsje Venrooy picking up a defensive save. Attempts by Vittese and Hyams were blocked before the Cavaliers were awarded the short corner that gave Hyams her scoring opportunity. Virginia held a 4-0 shot advantage in overtime.

This was the Cavaliers’ fourth overtime game of the season and their second in eight days against a top-three team. UVA has victories over Rutgers and then-No. 9 Boston College in OT, but fell 3-2 last Saturday at then-No. 3 North Carolina. Hyams also scored the game-winner at BC.

Virginia, which has won six of its last seven games, will head to Richmond on Tuesday, Oct. 18 to take on the Spiders at 5:30 p.m. before returning to Turf Field to host No. 7 Louisville on Friday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free for all regular-season home games at Turf Field.

No. 7 Louisville upsets No. 3 North Carolina

Louisville Athletics

The No. 7 ranked Louisville field hockey team took down the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday. Louisville Athletics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Erin McCrudden's goal in the second half proved to be the only scoring in the game while sophomore Ayeisha McFerran collected four saves in her sixth shutout of the season as the seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team upset No. 3 North Carolina in an ACC matchup Saturday afternoon at Trager Stadium.

"I'm incredibly proud," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "To play against a UNC team that's coached by one of the legendary coaches in our game, you know you're going to get a good game… I think the bottom line for us is that we played to our identity and when we can mix it up with the best. We had a lot of poise at the end of the game and we're learning valuable lessons along the way."

The teams battled through a scoreless first half with the Tar Heels holding a 5-4 edge in shots and each team earning a pair of penalty corners.

Eleven minutes into the second half, McCrudden worked her way toward the circle and delivered  a pass that went off of a defender's stick. The senior co-captain controlled the rebound and fired a shot into the top left corner of the cage for her second goal of the season.

"I think we just really stuck to our identity and that was our goal throughout the game, to pass the ball," said McCrudden. "Bethany Russ came up with the ball, we changed the play, which is something we've been working on and I was in the right place at the right time."

A yellow card issued to Louisville freshman Carter Ayars after a North Carolina corner meant that the Tar Heels held a one-player advantage for five minutes. During that time UNC earned another corner and had a pair of shots, but could not capitalize as the McFerran picked up a save and the Cardinals' defense stood strong.

With 4:45 remaining in regulation, North Carolina called a timeout and lifted goalkeeper Alex Halpin for an additional field player and pushed its attack up the field, but the Cards did not allow a shot as they held on for their seventh shutout of the season.

In the game, North Carolina held an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corners. Halpin (11-3) had two stops in the game for North Carolina (11-3, 3-2 ACC).

McFerran (11-3) registered four saves in the game as she continues to lead the ACC with six shutouts and a 0.80 goals-against average.

"We had a really good training week and we were really confident," said McFerran. "Obviously we respect UNC, but we were glad we could come out and stick to the game plan. For us to score – it was such an incredible team goal and everybody played a part in it… Our team defense played very well today so I had confidence in us being able to hold onto the lead."

Louisville (12-3, 2-3 ACC) returns to action on Sunday against Kent State at 12 p.m. The Cardinals will honor seniors Stephanie Byrne, Lizzie Gittens, Lotta Kahlert, Erin McCrudden, Hailey Netheron, Elina Pereira, Gianna Perrone and Shannon Sloss prior to the game.
