A timely boost

by S. Ramaguru

Proving his worth: Syed Mohamed Syafiq will feature for the second time with the national senior team in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh which starts on Saturday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former National Juniors defender Syed Mohamed Syafiq Syed Cholan is set to make his second outing with the senior national hockey team in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which starts in Ipoh on Saturday.

Syed Syafiq, who featured in the four-nation invitational in Melbourne, Australia, last November, had also played in the mixed national team in the Singapore SEA Games in 2015.

He was fielded in the second Test against New Zealand at the Tun Razak Stadium on Monday. The match ended in a 3-3 draw.

Four players who did not play in the World Hockey League Round Two are also back in the fray for the Ipoh meet.

They are goalkeeper S. Kumar (pic) and forwards Mohd Firhan Azhaari, Mohd Haziq Shamsul and Faizal Saari.

The five players dropped from the 23-man training squad are goalkeeper Mohd Hairi Abdul Rahman, Mohd Ramadan Rosli, Mohd Rashid Baharom, Mohd Izad Hakimi Jamaluddin and Joel van Huizen.

Hairi, Ramadan and Rashid are listed as substitutes in the event of any injury to the team.

National coach Stephen van Huizen was happy to see the return of players like Kumar, Haziq and Faizal for Ipoh meet.

“We did not have these players at the World Hockey League Round Two in Dhaka. This is a good chance to assess them ahead of the World Hockey League Semi-Finals in London in June.

“I have also included Syed Syafiq ... he deserves it,” he said.

The other teams competing in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, from April 29-May 6, are New Zealand, Australia, India, Britain and Japan.

Malaysia, who have never won the tournament and finished runners-up five times, were fourth last year and will open their campaign against Japan on Saturday.

All six teams in the tournament have qualified for the World Hockey League Semi-Finals.

Malaysia, Britain, India and New Zealand will play in the first Semi-Finals in London from June 15-25 while Australia and Japan will play in the second Semi-Finals in Johannesburg, South Africa, in July.

South African Indoor Hockey Men’s side named for African World Cup Qualifier

Tyron Barnard

The FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup will take place in February 2018 in Berlin in Germany. 12 Teams from around the globe will compete for the ultimate prize in Indoor Hockey, one of those teams will be from Africa. The identity of that team will be decided at the upcoming African Indoor Hockey World Cup Qualifier in Swakopmund in Namibia.

The South African Men will be up against the ever improving Namibians and Zimbabweans in a quest to qualify for their fourth Indoor Hockey World Cup. Bearing in mind the do or die nature of the tournament coach Pierre le Roux has named a team featuring some of the most exciting talent in South African indoor hockey.

“We have selected a very similar team to that which participated in the All Star series in December, which fared really well against a World Class All Stars side. This teams job is to qualify and after that we will begin building to the World Cup, our focus is firstly on the tournament in Namibia and we have the squad to get us there!”

In the goalkeeping department Richard Curtis maintains his place and is joined fellow 2015 World Cup goalkeeper Chris McCathie who has been unavailable for recent squads. The KZN Raiders supreme dominance at the 2016 IPT is also evident as 8 players make the squad. Captain Matt Fairweather is joined by arguably South Africa’s two best players from 2016 Justin Domleo and Jethro Eustice. Regular stalwarts in the SA squad Robin Jones and Mo Mea are also joined by Western Provinces Wade Paton and the newly married Keagan Robertson.

Reza Rosenberg produced the individual finest display by a South African in the Greenfields International All Stars series in December when he was not overawed by Olympic gold medallists Moritz Fuerste and Timo Wess and is rightfully rewarded with a place in the squad and is joined by his Southern Gauteng team mate Rusten Abrahams, who also debuted in the exhibition series against the All Stars. Abrahams finished matric in 2015 and should be a great role model to many youngsters in SA.

The last name in the list is the effervescent and exceptionally exciting Ryan Julius who would probably have been a lot closer to the first name on the list than the last. Ryan was unavailable after selection in December due to competing in the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup.

2017 is a very important year for the U.S. Women's National Indoor Team which includes the Pan American Indoor Cup (PAIC), the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Tournament, held in October in Guyana.

“With so many of our players playing or coaching in college, it is disappointing to see this important event placed in the middle of our college season,” commented Kentwell. “Our players have been very committed, dedicated a lot of time and made such significant strides. It will very disappointing if our key, core, players are unable to go to the PAIC.”

Fortunately, Kentwell has given the opportunity to some of the U-19 Squad players to step up and play on the senior level during the past year and gain some invaluable experience.

“We have some very talented young players who showed in the Rohrmax Cup that they can play at the international level, but they will need the poise and leadership from some of our experienced senior players if we are to be successful in our goal of qualifying for the Indoor World Cup,” said Kentwell.

Each squad will train throughout the summer in the lead-up to the PAIC, with the selections for Team USA's roster that will travel to Guyana being made at the beginning of September.

Hockey Australia re-sign major sponsor Ausdrill

Hockeyroos major sponsor

Holly MacNeil

Hockey Australia has today announced that diversified mining services company, Ausdrill has re-signed as a major sponsor of the Australian Women’s National hockey team in a deal which will see them continue until at least the end of 2019.

In addition to re-signing with the Hockeyroos, Ausdrill is also now a secondary sponsor to the Australian Men’s National hockey team, the Kookaburras. The move to sponsor both teams comes as Hockey Australia continues to promote gender equality across the sport.

Hockey Australia interim Chief Executive, Ben Hartung said: “We are thrilled to have Ausdrill back on board in sponsoring the Hockeyroos as well as the Kookaburras in our run up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“Ausdrill have been a huge supporter of the Hockeyroos for a number of years and our athletes have thoroughly enjoyed the engagement and promotional opportunities that have been created through the partnership. Ausdrill have welcomed our national teams into the Ausdrill family and we are very appreciative of their enhanced support for our organisation and the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras.”

The continued sponsorship was announced to the Hockeyroos and Ausdrill staff at a special launch event held at Ausdrill HQ last Friday, where the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras presented a signed 2017 playing kit to Ausdrill staff.

Ausdrill first began sponsoring the Hockeyroos in March 2012 and are delighted to be continuing the sponsorship, with Ausdrill Managing Director Ron Sayers commenting: “The Hockeyroos’ record as a team is virtually unrivalled, and it is our great honour to be associated with them and support them in their efforts to achieve continued success, both on and off the field.

“The feedback we have had from our people is that they now regard the Hockeyroos as ‘their team’, and we are therefore delighted to announce this extension to our sponsorship.”

The Hockeyroos will next compete in the World League Semi-finals in Brussels, Belgium in June.

EY Champions Trophy Preview

The opening match of the weekend see’s UCD take on Loreto, with the students presumably riding on a wave of confidence following their recent Irish Senior Cup and EY Hockey League titles as they bid for the treble. On paper there isn’t much between these two sides with the teams drawing their first EYHL game 2-2, and UCD taking the spoils in the reverse fixture with a 1-0 victory. The UCD defence currently holds the lowest goals- against title in the EYHL and Clodagh Cassin will surely prove tough to beat while the experienced Sarah Robinson and Lena Tice are all too capable of turning defence into attack with pin point passes through to midfield. But Loreto have goal-scoring threats all over the pitch with a whole host of the squad getting on the scoresheet throughout the season. Sarah Torrans racked up 5 goals in their final match of the season, while Jessica McGirr bagged herself 2 hat tricks in quick succession. Louisa Healy should prove invaluable in the Loreto goal and all the teams international experience will be called upon whether it be Ali Meeke’s creativity or Hannah Matthews’ unwavering reliability. Likewise, the duel between Lizzie Colvin and, Gillian Pinder in midfield could be a key battle in who progresses to the final with Colvin in imperious form this season domestically and internationally. Colvin is set to depart Loreto at the end of the season which may add additional motivation for silverware, regardless the opening match of the weekend should set the high standard for the weekend.

The second women’s match pushes back at 12:30pm between Hermes/Monkstown and Cork Harlequins. Both sides have lost out to UCD in recent weeks with Harlequins denied late on in the Irish Senior Cup final while Hermes/Monkstown saw the EYHL title slip from their grasp in the final match of the league. It is touch and go whether Hermes/Monkstown will be without their top goal scorer Anna O’Flanagan who is recovering from concussion, but the side have pace and skill abound in the forms of Nikki Evans and Sinead Loughran. While Hermes/Monkstown have taken all 6 points from the teams 2 EYHL fixtures this year that doesn’t tell the whole story. Harlequins were set to enjoy a share of the spoils before a last minute goal from Evans saw Hermes/Monkstown escape as 3-2 victors in their first fixture, while the reverse fixture saw just 1 goal separate the sides again with a 4-3 victory for the Dubliners. Karen Bateman sits inside this season’s top 5 goalscorers and Harlequins will be need her to be in top form to put a few past Liz Murphy in the Hermes goal. Irish under-age players Michelle Barry and Caoimhe Perdue have also played key roles throughout the season.

The Monkstown fans will be treated to a double header as their men’s team take on Banbridge at 3pm with the latter looking to add yet another trophy to their cabinet as part of an impressive season so far.  The Ulster side secured the EYHL title last week with a 6-1 victory over Railway Union and have close to a full complement with a plethora of internationals taking to the pitch. Eugene Magee and Matthew Bell should be potent threats particularly at short corner time while Philip Brown played a critical role the last time the two teams met in the Irish Senior Cup final, with Bann running out 3-1 victors. But Monkstown will have learned plenty from that fixture and David Fitzgerald’s recent return following a lengthy injury absence will be pivotal. Likewise, David Carson has been his sides top goal scorer and got his name on the scoresheet in the Irish Senior Cup final, while captain Stephen Cole’s leadership is invaluable to the Dublin side.

The final match of Saturday’s action is between Three Rock Rovers and Lisnagarvey at 5pm. There was nothing to separate the teams in their first match of the season with a 1-1 draw the conclusion, but Three Rock appeared to go up a few gears for the reverse fixture as they earned a 3-1 victory with Irish underage player Conor Empey getting on the score sheet both times. Niall Denham’s young side narrowly missed out on the EYHL title despite racking up 9 goals against Instonians in the final match of the league. Luke Madeley bagged himself a hat trick in that match to put him joint top of the goal scoring chart and is capable of testing the Lisnagarvey defence. ‘Garvey haven’t quite reached the heights of last year’s success but still boast an impressive squad with Olympians Paul Gleghorne and Jonathan Bell key men for them. Captain Daniel Buser had a stand out performance at the EHL in Eindhoven and will be looking for more of the same if his side are to book their place in the EY Champions Trophy final.

All EY Champions Trophy matches will be streamed live, links will be provided in the coming days.

Sikh Union eye revival

By BRIAN YONGA

Former champions Sikh Union Nairobi play Parkroad Badgers Wednesday evening in a mid-week Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier league match at City Park Stadium, Nairobi.

Both teams have had a spluttering start to the season and are already way off the pace at this early stage of the campaign.

They have played three matches each, won one, lost two each and have three points respectively. Sikh are in 10th place with the Badgers to places back in 12th in the 15 team league. Sikh, the 2012 champions though enjoy a superior goal difference on their opponents. Whoever wins the 6pm encounter will move to sixth place on six points, same as two-time champions Butali Sugar Warriors, who have played two matches only.

Badgers coach Cyrus Kanyi termed Sikh as an experienced side but believes his team can secure the three points if they contain their dangermen upfront.

Kanyi, a former national team player,  noted they have blown hot and cold in the first three matches of the season and believes a win in today’s clash will steady their ship as the season progress.

“Our current position in the league does not reflect our performances and we don’t deserve to be close to the bottom . Our biggest undoing hss been our finishing which has seen drop so many points and we need to work on that, “ said the tactician.
“We create so many chances and if we put them away we wiill be challenging for the league and not looking over our shoulders trying to avoid a relegation fight.”

The Badgers head to Wednesday’s match on the back of a 2-0 loss to Kenyatta University Vultures on Easter Sunday.

His opposite number Inderjit Matharu of Sikh said they will be out to build on their recent 5-0 win against United States International University Africa (USIU-A). “They are unpredictable side and therefore we will not underestimate them. We have had a slow start but the win against USIU has given us morale and we want more of such performances going forward,” the hockey legend told Nation Sport.

Matharu will count on Davies Wanangwe and Francis Esikhuri to deliver the goals for his side.

The duo ripped apart USIU’s defence and Badgers defenders will certainly have their hands full.

Johor Juniors move closer to top with home win

KUALA LUMUR: SMKDBL Johor Juniors are on a roll in Division One of the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

The Johor school boys defeated Politeknik Malaysia 3-1 at their Batu Pahat Hockey Turf yesterday to move into second spot in the standings with 11 points – just one point behind leaders MBPJ.

It was the Johor school’s third win in a row since the April 9 defeat (1-2) to UniKL.

Yesterday’s win is timely as they face two crucial matches next – against Anderson Thunderbolt on Friday and MBPJ on Sunday.

“It was crucial that we won today. Our players were more composed and took their chances well,” said team manager Shahbuddin Royani.

“We trailed early in the match, but the players kept their cool and managed to win it.”

Politeknik went ahead in the 28th minute through a Umar Hakim Ahmad Robang field goal.

Mohd Haikal Khairul Azmi equalised for the Johor side in the 34th minute before giving them the lead 10 minutes later.

Mohd Adib Azim Abd Shukor made sure of all three points with another field goal in the 57th minute.

At the SSTMI Turf in Bandar Penawar, league champions SSTMI Thunderbolt defeated Anderson 6-1 to move into third place.

Amirul Firdaus Shamsudin scored a brace for SSTMI in the ninth and 56th minutes. Their other goals came from Mohd Ariff Syafie Ishak (2nd minute), Mohd Amirul Hamizan Azhar (10), Mohd Akhimullah Anuar Esook (27) and Mohd Shahrin Izzudin Shamsuri (33).

Mohd Najme Ahmad Hayazi scored Anderson’s lone goal in the 31st minute.

At the KL Hockey Stadium, overall champions BJSS Thunderbolt drew 2-2 against Pahang’s AHP-MSP Thunderbolt.

Game paramount for first citizens of hockey

Manuja Veerappa

BENGALURU: Abhinandan Kumar Bhardwaj, the right winger of Citizen Hockey team, is an aggressive force on the pitch. Although shy by nature off the field, what stands out in the wily player is his ability to take on challenges life throws at him consistently.

Abhinandan, 13, has seen his sister lose her limbs due to medical negligence following an accident. The left side of his father's body is paralyzed and his mother is the key breadwinner through a tea stall they own in Delhi. When he is not playing hockey or studying at the Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Mahrauli in New Delhi, Abhinandan is busy helping his parents at their tea stall. Yet, ask the teenager about life and sport and he says, "Life sab kuch sikha deta hai aur hockey life mein ek maksad deta hai."

The lad from Gorakhpur is among thousands of budding hockey players who are a part of a Delhi-based NGO - One Thousand Hockey Legs (OTHL). Through programmes in government schools, youngsters are drafted and taught hockey apart from spoken English and career counselling through classes. The team is currently participating in the Hockey India Sub-junior men's national championship here.

For young players like Abhinandan, hockey is a healer which they also believe is their ticket to a better life and recognition. "My parents have never stopped me from playing hockey and I enjoy playing the sport. I put in a lot of hard work but once I get on to the field I forget everything. I wake up by 5am and sometimes cycle 15 km for training. I know my responsibilities so I help out at the tea stall as well," pointed out the Gurbaj Singh fan whose sporting ambition is centred on representing India at the Olympics.

In contrast, Abhinandan's teammate Gulshan Kumar hasn't found much encouragement at home but that's not stopped him from chasing his dream of being an India player.

Son of a stone-cutting factory worker, the 16-year-old has been hooked to hockey for the past five years. His mother, who lives in their ancestral home in Bihar, and father believe his future lies in studies, but Gulshan says while studies will not take a back seat, hockey is his priority.

To ensure his love for hockey does not come in the way of his responsibilities towards his family, the midfielder is up at the crack of dawn and helps his father cook a meal for him and his two siblings before heading for practice and school. Once back, it is Gulshan's responsibility to cook dinner for the family.

Former Delhi hockey captain Gurmeet Singh, who has been coaching the team for a year now, said: "They all come from underprivileged backgrounds. Some of them can't afford the bus fare to reach the ground. The beauty is that these boys don't need to be motivated. They are self-motivated given the exposure they get in tournaments such as this. Children who come from backgrounds like this have greater hunger to succeed."
