Black Sticks blitz India in opening test

The Vantage Black Sticks Women have defeated India 4-1 in the opening match of the series at Rosa Birch Park in Pukekohe.
New Zealand played a complete game on both attack and defence with the midfielders and strikers putting together some creative phases of play.
The Black Sticks scored two goals in each half with Jordan Grant, Olivia Merry, Rachel McCann and Deanna Ritchie all finding the back of the net.
Head coach for the series Sean Dancer said it was an impressive way to set the tone.
“I thought it was a really competitive game, especially early on but we really stepped it up and took control in many aspects,” he said.
“We did well up front and that was shown by the number and quality of goals we scored. There were some great scoring instincts in the attacking circle and that was a real credit to the girls.
“All the girls worked hard and put in a good performance today but we can’t be complacent, we need to go away and focus on test two on Tuesday night.”
The Kiwis made a fast start from the opening whistle and controlled much of the possession as India struggled to find passing channels.
Grant opened the scoring in the 13th minute after getting the final touch on a cracking shot at goal from Merry.
The Black Sticks doubled their lead 10 minutes later thanks to a passage of play which saw McCann fire a perfect pass to Merry who slotted a goal through the keeper’s legs.
India responded after the halftime break with Anupa Barla sneaking behind the New Zealand defence to score and claw back at the deficit.
The Kiwis continued fighting against the more settled Indians but extended their lead to 3-2 in the 43rd minute when Grant smacked a shot at goal for McCann to deflect in on the dive.
Ritchie sealed the result in stunning fashion five minutes from fulltime when she put pressure on the Indian fullback and stole the ball before lobbing over the keeper’s head.
With a day off tomorrow, both teams are back in action in the second test at Pukekohe at 7pm on Tuesday night with live coverage through the Vantage Black Sticks Facebook page.

New Zealand scored a convincing 4-1 victory in Pukekohe, with goals from Jordan Grant, Olivia Merry, Rachel McCann and Deanna Ritchie.

India go down 1-4 to New Zealand in women's hockey
PUKEKOHE (New Zealand): India were outplayed 1-4 by New Zealand in their opening game of a five-match women's hockey series which began at the Rosa Birch Park on Sunday.
Both teams were quick to get off the blocks with hosts New Zealand building pressure on the Indian women with an attacking game.
New Zealand found their first breakthrough in the 13th minute when Jordan Grant converted a field goal to end the first quarter with a 1-0 lead.
Olivia Merry scored a 23rd minute goal to put further pressure on India.
Though New Zealand dominated the first two quarters, the 10-minute break during half-time helped the Indian eves recover from a 0-2 deficit with Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne bringing in vital strategic changes.
Anupa Barla (31') converted a field goal only 40 seconds into the third quarter to narrow the goal difference to 1-2.
The Indian forwards led by the experienced Vandana Katariya vied to equalise but they could not find success.
Meanwhile, Rachael McCann scored New Zealand's third goal in the 43rd minute to end the third quarter at 3-1.
A defensive error in the circle by India cost them dearly with New Zealand's Deanna Ritchie scoring the fourth goal for her team in the 55th minute.
Though India made several attempts to come back into the game, trying to create space, New Zealand's defence proved too strong to break.

Victorious JKUAT move to second in hockey league

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology on Saturday moved to second place in the Kenya Hockey Union women’s Premier League after a 1-0 win over Vikings at City Park Stadium in Nairobi.
Ivy Kinyua fired in the only goal of the game in the 26th minute off Fraciah Karanja’s penalty corner to hand the students the three points.
It was JKUAT’s third win from six matches moving them to 12 points, six behind leaders Telkom Orange.
The Juja-based side also maintained their unbeaten start to the season and alongside champions Orange, are the only sides in the league yet to lose a match.
At the same venue, visiting Kisumu Young Stars came from behind to see of Wazalendo Youth 2-1 in a men’s National League encounter.

JKUAT’s win pleased their coach Samuel Oungo.
“At this point last season, we were somewhere near the bottom. The attitude this season is fantastic. The players are believing in themselves and that is showing in our performance,” Oungo said.
The result left Vikings in eighth place with three points from five matches played.
The students came into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw with Sliders in their last league outing, while Vikings has beaten Sliders 2-1.
After a dull opening quarter, the game came to life in the second quarter as both coaches abandoned their cautious approach.
It was Vikings, who threatened first with a couple of penalty corners, that were brilliantly saved by JKUAT keeper Emmah Aroni. The goalie had to be at her best again in the 23rd minute kicking away Susan Muchai’s well hit shot.
Three minutes later, JKUAT went in-front with their first short corner of the match.
Karanja squared short for Mary Njoki and the skipper teed up Kinyua who found the bottom left corner leaving Vikings keeper Winnie Kiprop with no chance. Despite several attacks, Vikings were unable to penetrate the stone-walled JKUAT defence which has only conceded once all season.
In the second tier encounter, Wazalendo went ahead in the 42nd minute through Trevin Oballa’s field goal but the lakeside boys hit back four minutes later through Eddie Newton, who scored from a penalty stroke after he had been impeded on his way to goal.
Brian Kiptum grabbed the winner eight minutes to the end after Kisumu counter attacked leaving the home side stranded.

Tuks storm ahead with commanding win over UJ

Top-of-the-log Tuks took on the underperforming UJ in the first match of the Saturday’s South African Varsity Hockey tournament at the NWU-Pukke Astro turf and emerged with an easy 5-0 win.
Tuks beat Maties 3-1 in the clash of the day on Friday and carried on their momentum as Round Six of Varsity Hockey got into full swing.
Tuks had the better opportunities in the first chukka showcasing better stick control with Catherine Morris and Thando Chithi combining well on the right.
Morris found reward after nine minutes with a backstick field goal to open the scoring for Tuks with a 2-0 lead. Tuks ended the first chukka with the momentum on their side and looked to extend it in the next 15 minutes. UJ’s Jivanka Kruger was one of the Orange Army’s better players in the middle of the field, creating gaps for her teammates with precise passes.
Tuks, though, showed their counter attacking ability as Claire Gibbings’ shot hit the post from an acute angle, as Tuks kept the pressure on. UJ’s Robyn Ormond was a thorn in Tuks’ flesh and a blessing for her side as she kept them in the game with a couple of excellent saves before the half-time break.
Tuks’ captain Natalie Esteves extended her side’s lead with a brilliant drag-flick from a penalty corner that thundered in the top corner of the net, making it 3-0.
The second half was a much tighter affair with UJ aiming to get back into the game and Tuks doing the exact opposite in trying to extend their three-goal cushion. UJ tried their best, but their lack of precision in the final quarter of the field resulted in missed opportunities for coach Lance Louw’s side.
Tuks scored next in the fourth chukka with Esteves grabbing her brace with a deflected goal from a penalty corner. UJ’s last chance was with their Powerplay which they took with 10 minutes remaining, but Tuks’ defence of Marissa Poolman and Chane Hill stood firm to keep UJ from scoring in the match.

Maties keep their wits about them with savvy victory

Maties’ well-oiled Maroon Platoon picked up another impressive victory in Varsity Hockey with a 4-1 defeat of Wits on Saturday afternoon.
These two Varsity Hockey semi-final contenders came to blows on Saturday afternoon as Maties and Wits put everything on the line in a back and forth encounter at the NWU-Puk Astro turf in Potchefstroom.
The action was fast and ferocious from the start with Wits scoring first through Lezaan Janse van Vuuren who drilled her shot in from close range to give her side a 1-0 lead.
Maties answered back only five minutes later with Minke van Heerden giving her side double delight with a field goal. Star SA player, Tarryn Glasby extended Maties’ advantage with a goal from a penalty corner as her side took control in the second chukka with the score at 3-1.
Wits defended for the lives in the last three minutes of the first half as Maties were relentless on attack. Keeper Petro Stofberg and Sissy Pieterse were both fantastic in defence and kept the score within range as the half-time whistle sounded.
Nicole le Fleur also showed her skills as goalkeeper with a fantastic save that denied Wits’ Mandisa Sigudla an equaliser from open play.
Wits started the second-half with renewed vigour, knowing full well that they needed to score first to get back into the game. Even with three consecutive short corners, they could not get the ball into the net as time ticked away for the ladies in yellow and blue.
Glasby scored her second goal from a penalty corner to drive home Maties’ advantage with 23 minutes of play left in the match. Right thereafter Wits called for the Powerplay in a desperate attempt to cut into Maties’ lead. But nothing good came for the Joburg-based varsity in this two minute interval.
In the end Maties were more clinical in front of the net when the opportunity presented itself and deserved their victory.

Kovsies keep semi-final dream alive with victory over Madibaz

It was a nail-biting last chukka but Kovsies managed to hold on to their lead to claim victory over the Madibaz with a final score of 3-2, to stay in touching distance of a semi-final spot.
Both teams showed an equal amount of momentum and spent large periods in the circle, but as the end of the first chukka came the score was still 0-0.
Heading into the second half it was Kovsies with more momentum over the Madibaz as Antonet Louw opened the scoreboard. She found the perfect spot on her stick to let the ball hit the backboard with an easy field goal and put her team 2-0 in the lead.
It was her fellow teammate Nisa van Zyl, who followed in her footsteps a minute before halftime as she managed to round off a short corner in the circle to leave their team on 3-0.
Cassandra Lister from Madibaz struck back to narrow Kovsies’ lead to a one point on 3-2 when she found an open gap to let the ball dribble over the goal line and hit the backboard.
Madibaz had to leave the field suffering another defeat, but will hope to restore their name when they face UJ on Sunday.

Pukke secure semi-final spot with 8-0 victory over UKZN

The NWU-Pukke lacked some finishing skills against UKZN in the circle, but with the performance of Lori Hyde they managed to walk off the field with a final score of 8-0 in Potchefstroom on Saturday night.
Pukke missed many scoring opportunities in the first chukka of the match as they couldn’t put any points on the board.
But it was two quick goals and a superb performance by Charne Maddocks, who put the hosts in a favourable position of 3-0 up heading into the second half thanks to fine finishing, with a penalty corner and field goal.
In the third chukka Pukke missed numerous short corner opportunities but it was Lindi Anker’s turn to finish a short corner dummy to leave them on 4-0.
UKZN’s great defensive effort kept Pukke from scoring a few times in the final chukka. But as Pukke called the Powerplay it was Hyde who extended their lead with two points to leave them on 6-0.
In the last minute of the game Hyde finished in style as she claimed another field goal for her side to end the match on a score of 8-0 as UKZN faced another defeat.

Surbiton add two GB internationals while Reading also make moves
Surbiton Hockey Club have added two GB and England internationals to their roster already as they look forward to their return to the Euro Hockey League next season as English champions.
Luke Taylor and James Gall (pictured for Surbiton vs Oranje Zwart) will both link up with the club that stunned Wimbledon in the league final last month, coming from 3-0 down to eventually claim the title on a shoot-out
Taylor joins from Loughborough Students and brings with a powerful drag-flick and experience from the 2013 Under-21 Junior World Cup and was added to the GB central programme in January 2017.
Taylor said of his new club: “I am very excited about the prospect of working alongside Mark Pearn and Matt Jones again and with such a young and talented team that aren’t just looking to do big things domestically but also in Europe.
“Surbiton’s ambition is clear and for me, training and playing in such a warm family club environment is the perfect foundation to not only enjoy my hockey but develop and improve.”
Coach Mark Pearn added: “I have known Luke for many years since giving him his debut for East Grinstead as a promising 15 year-old with massive potential and I am looking forward to working with him again. Luke has developed into a powerful defender with an outstanding range of passes and his penalty corner threat will add another dimension to our attacking play.”
Soon after, Surbiton confirmed Gall will add to their panel from Beeston. They midfielder played for the club before going to university in Nottingham.
He won his first senior cap for England versus South Africa in March 2017 and was a member of the GB squad that won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final in Ipoh, Malaysia on 6th May 2017 – the first time GB or England had won this title since 1994.
He said of the move: “I’m incredibly excited about the potential of this young Surbiton side and really looking forward to joining up with the boys ahead of next season. However, my decision to re-join Surbiton goes way beyond the quality of the first team squad and I am very much looking forward to being a part of such a great, family orientated, club once again.”
Pearn, meanwhile, added: “It is great to see James returning to his home club next season and I cannot wait to see him link up with the talented group of players we have. James is exactly the type of attacking player we need to push this group forwards as we look to compete at the very highest level in Europe and retain our two National titles.”
Elsewhere, the moves are coming quick and fast with Lee Morton moving to Reading from Scottish champions Kelburne while Dan Kyriakides has also joined the club from Welsh winners Cardiff & Met.

Anderson eye another giant-killing act in semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Anderson Thunderbolt would love to add another prized scalp in their bid to reach the final of the Malaysia Junior Hockey League (MJHL).
The Ipoh school stunned newly-crowned Division One champions Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) 3-2 in the quarter-finals at the MBPJ Hockey Stadium on Friday.
And Anderson, who finished fifth in Division One, now want to get the better of Pahang Hockey Academy (AHP)-MSP-Thunderbolt in today’s semi-finals at the Tun Razak Stadium.
Said Anderson coach M. Kaliswaran: “Our players are in high spirits after beating MBPJ.
“They showed that they can beat any team in the knockout stage.
“I have faith that they will rise to the occasion again to beat Pahang Hockey Acedemy.
“We also have a score to settle against Pahang Hockey Academy as we lost to them (2-1 in a penalty shootout after both teams drew 2-2 in regulation time) in the playoff for third place last year.
“We also lost to them in the league match this season but playing in the knockout stage is a totally different ball game.”
Pahang Hockey Academy coach Mohd Sufian Mohamed has warned his side not to underestimate Anderson.
“Anderson have improved a lot. If they can beat MBPJ, then they are capable of beating any team. The pressure is on us to stop them,” said Sufian.
The other semi-final is between defending overall champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Thunderbolt and Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) Thunderbolt, last year’s league champions.
SSTMI are out for revenge as BJSS denied them a double with a 4-3 win in the battle for the overall title last season.
In their league clash this season, BJSS edged SSTMI 6-5 in the penalty shootout after both teams drew 2-2.
“It’s not going to be easy as BJSS have a solid set of players in every department.
“It will be another closely-fought match,” conceded SSTMI coach Wan Roslan Wan Abdul Rahman.

Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy took a giant step towards the 7th Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Women) ?A? Division title, defeating defending champions Hockey Punjab 8-0 in the semi-finals in Bhopal on Saturday.
Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy made sure they capitalised on their first semi final appearance in two years, to put in an impressive performance and dismiss Hockey Punjab 8-0.
Captain Karishma Singh led from the front scoring the opener in the 5th minute of the game, and from there they never looked back, constantly attacking, probing and creating chances around defending champions' defence.
Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy would go on to score six times in the first half, effectively sealing the game before the half time whistle. In a display of incredible maturity, they held on to control the second half too, and spare themselves energy while doing so, to take a huge step to the title.
Singh went on to score a hat trick (5?, 19?, 37?) in an overall impressive display by her team. The other goals scorers for Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy were Neelu Dadiya (15?), Sadhna Sengar (26?, 31?), Anjali Gautam (30?) and Sarita Devi Brahmachari Mayum (36?).
In Bengaluru, action continued on the fourth day of 7th Sub Junior National Hockey Championship 2017 (Men) A Division.
In the day?s opener from Pool B, Uttar Pradesh Hockey beat Manipur Hockey 6-3 in a game filled with goals and high-paced action.
Uttar Pradesh Hockey opened the scoring via Akhtar Ali in the 13th minute and doubled that lead eight minutes later via Suraj Singh. They never truly let up on their advantage and despite a brief barrage by Manipur Hockey Uttar Pradesh Hockey comfortably took the victory. Saurabh Anand (63?, 67?) scored a brace for the winners in the match.
In Pool B?s second game, Hockey Bihar beat Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu 4-0. Goals for Hockey Bihar were scored by, Martin Tuti (11?), Soma Dhan (25?), Turtan Minz (50?) and Johnson Purty (57?).
Hockey Chandigarh outclassed Hockey Maharashtra 13-0 in Pool C?s opener. A hat-trick for Hashim (20?, 26?, 43?, 48?) and Sahibjeet Singh (31?, 45?, 69?) guaranteed them a comfortable victory. Maninder Singh (56?, 59?) also scored a brace in the victory.
In Pool C?s second game, Hockey Patiala beat Hockey Bhopal 3-2. Hockey Bhopal?s Sameer Ahmed opened the scoring 4th minute. From there though, Hockey Patiala took complete control of the match, and scored three smart goals via Manpreet Singh (10?), Bikramjit Singh (62?) and Aman Thakur (64?) to take the victory and three points.
Chhattisgarh Hockey beat Delhi Hockey 2-1 in Pool D?s opener. Two goals in second half by Khilesh Pandya (43?) and Sonu Nishad (53?) opened the game out for Chhattisgarh Hockey. Despite a late goal by Lokesh Vats for Delhi Hockey in the 67th minute, Chhattisgarh Hockey held on for the three points.
In Pool D, hosts Hockey Karnataka played out a tough 1-1 draw with Hockey Jharkhand. Asim Tirkey scored the opener for Hockey Jharkhand in the 47th minute.
Hockey Karnataka?s leveller came in the 58th minute via Subal Kerketta. Despite a host of chances for both sides, neither was able to convert the winner, and had to split the points.

Winchester clinch Under 14 Boys Club Crown

Winchester secured their first ever Under 14 Boys Championship crown with a 2-0 final win over Surbiton, at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Despite having only qualified for the final on goal difference, they took full advantage of this to clinch the crown and did so in style, keeping a clean sheet.
They started the day emphatically, scoring 5 goals without reply in their Pool A tie against Canterbury, while Leicester recorded a 3-1 win against Wakefield. In Pool B defending champions Cheltenham began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Harrogate and last year’s losing finalists, Surbiton, started with a win 2-0 against Cambridge City.
The second round of matches saw Leicester defeat Winchester 2-0 while Wakefield and Canterbury ended all square at 2-2. Pool B saw both Cheltenham and Surbiton record victories over Cambridge City and Harrogate respectively, to set up a winner takes all final match.
The final pool games saw Canterbury beat Leicester 3-1 while Winchester returned to winning ways beating Wakefield 4-0 to progress to the final on Goal difference. Surbiton came out top in the battle to win Pool B defeating Cheltenham 2-0, while Cambridge and Harrogate played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
In the play off matches Cambridge overcame Wakefield 3-1 to take 7th place; the 5th/6th game was a high scoring affair with Canterbury running out 6 - 2 winners against Harrogate. Leicester survived a late rally from Cheltenham to clinch third place with a 2-1 score line. But the headline makers of the day were Winchester, who came out on top of Surbiton, beating the South West London club 2-0 and will take the trophy proudly back to Hampshire.
