Black Sticks Women named for World League

Vantage Black Sticks Women’s head coach Mark Hager has named his strongest team to compete at the FIH World League Semi Final in Belgium next month.

New Zealand will battle it out against some of the world’s best sides from 21 June - 2 July at the Stade Fallon in Brussels.

The Black Sticks are joined in Pool B by hosts Belgium, Oceania champions Australia, Spain and Malaysia while Pool A includes reigning world champions Netherlands, Asian champions Korea, China, Scotland and Italy.

Split across two events, 10 teams will take part in Brussels with another 10 competing at the World League Semi Final in Johannesburg from 8-23 July.

With qualification at stake for the FIH World League Final in Auckland this November (New Zealand have automatic qualification as hosts), both Semi Final events also serve as World Cup qualifiers.

Whilst vital FIH Hero World Ranking points will be awarded depending on final standings, the top teams from each Semi Final will qualify for the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup in London.

It’s an experienced side with 10 players having played more than 100 tests while versatile player Stacey Michelsen spearheads the group with 224 caps.

Many players have earned their spot after impressing during February’s Argentina tour, the Hawke’s Bay Cup and the recent Indian series in Pukekohe and Hamilton which the Black Sticks swept 5-0.

Hager said the depth within the group presented some tough selection decisions.

“This is the strongest team we have at present after tests against Argentina, the Hawke’s Bay Cup and also the Indian series this year,” he said.

“There were some very challenging decisions in selecting the final group which shows we have healthy depth at the moment which is great following an Olympic year.

“We know the World League Semi Final will be very tough and it offers the top level competition we need to play amongst to continue developing. We’ll be pushing for a top performance with the ultimate goal to come away having qualified for the World Cup.”

New Zealand’s opening game at the World League Semi Final is against Spain on Thursday June 22 at 6am (NZT). All Vantage Black Sticks games will be broadcast live on SKY Sport.

Three teams dominate women's Black Sticks squad

By David Leggat

Three teams provide the lions share of the Black Sticks women's hockey squad for next months' World League semifinal in Brussels.

The fifth-ranked New Zealand side includes five players from the Waikato-based Midlands side, with four apiece coming from Northland and Canterbury.

There is plenty of depth in the 18-strong squad, even though six highly-experienced players have opted to take a break from the game this year.

Ten players have over 130 caps, headed by world class defender-cum midfielder Stacey Michelsen, with 224 internationals.

The least-capped player is unattached goalkeeper Grace O'Hanlon, who has been based in Australia but is now living in Auckland. She's won just 10 caps but edged out Auckland's Amelia Gibson for the second keeping job alongside vastly-experienced Sally Rutherford.

New Zealand coach Mark Hager has given all his players decent match time recently to put their case for selection.

The world No 5 Black Sticks won the Hawkes Bay Cup in Hastings in April, then beat India 5-0 in their most recent series which ended last weekend.

In one sense, the world tournament has an element of importance removed for New Zealand. They will host the world league final in Auckland in November so don't need to worry about qualifying.

However they should do well in the 10-nation tournament.

Their pool matches are against Spain (ranked 10), Australia (4), Belgium (14) and Malaysia (22) before quarter-finals, semis and final playoffs.

New Zealand women's squad for the World League semifinal in Brussels next month:

Goalkeepers: Grace O'Hanlon (unattached), Sally Rutherford (Midlands)

Defenders/Midfielders: Sam Charlton, Natasha Fitzimons, Rose Keddell (Midlands), Erin Goad (North Harbour), Ella Gunson, Stacey Michelsen, Brooke Neal (Northland), Liz Thompson (Auckland), Pippa Hayward, Jordan Grant, Rachel McCann (Canterbury).

Strikers: Kelsey Smith (Capital), Sam Harrison (Auckland), Kirsten Pearce (North Harbour), Olivia Merry (Canterbury), Amy Robinson (Midlands). Travelling reserve: Frances Davies (Midlands).

World League schedule (NZT):
June 22: v Spain
June 25: v Australia
June 26: v Belgium
June 28: v Malaysia
Knockout matches start June 30

The Black Sticks women have named an experienced squad for June's World League semi-final tournament in Belgium with 10 players boasting 100 caps or more.

Many players have earned their spot after impressing during February's Argentina tour, the Hawke's Bay Cup and last week's Indian series in Pukekohe and Hamilton, which New Zealand won 5-0.

Coach Mark Hager said it was the strongest team they could select.

"There were some very challenging decisions in selecting the final group, which shows we have healthy depth at the moment, which is great following an Olympic year.

"We know the World League semi-final will be very tough and it offers the top-level competition we need to play amongst to continue developing. We'll be pushing for a top performance with the ultimate goal to come away having qualified for the World Cup."

Stacey Michelsen, who debuted in 2009, is the most experienced player in the New Zealand squad with 224 caps, while Sam Charlton, Ella Gunson, Sam Harrison, Pippa Hayward, Rose Keddell, Olivia Merry, Brooke Neal, Liz Thompson and veteran goalkeeper Sally Rutherford have all played more than 100 international matches.

The Black Sticks are joined in Pool B by hosts Belgium, Oceania champions Australia, Spain and Malaysia while Pool A includes reigning world champions Netherlands, Asian champions South Korea, China, Scotland and Italy.

Split across two events,10 teams will take part in Brussels with another 10 competing at the World League semi-final in Johannesburg from July 8-23.

With qualification at stake for the FIH World League final in Auckland in November (New Zealand have automatic qualification as hosts), both semi-final events serve as World Cup qualifiers.

Kampong end 32-year wait for Dutch title with dramatic victory

SV Kampong won the Dutch Hoofdklasse for the first time in 32 years as they won a shoot-out for the second time in four days against Rotterdam to spark massive celebrations in Utrecht.

It took just 16 seconds for Bjorn Kellerman to continue his brilliant run of form to score the opening goal for 1-0. Seve van Ass levelled with a tip in from Blair Tarrant’s cross and they had the chance to go ahead but Jeroen Hertzberger saw his penalty stroke brilliantly denied by David Harte.

Constantijn Jonker’s close range finish restored the lead before Hertzberger scored to make it 2-2 and send the tie to a shoot-out once again.

There, Harte kept out Jochem Bakker and then stayed in control of a shoot-out from Harry Martin, forcing him to shoot wide to see Kampong win out 4-3, giving them a second win in their best of three final.

Harte was mobbed by his team mates after that shoot-out, something he told hockey.nl was “an explosion of emotion”.

“I’ve been with Kampong five years, coming close many times. Now it’s finally here, it’s just so emotional.”

As for his final save, his method was rudimentary: "I had at that time no special thoughts. Simply: stop the ball!”

It closed out a rollercoaster end to the season. Kampong were on the brink of elimination before a last minute goal in their last game of the regular season against Oranje-Rood saved their place in the playoffs.

They then came from behind in their semi-final against Bloemendaal and in the first leg against Rotterdam.

“This was a Houdini act. We escaped a few times but I always had confidence.”

Körper’s four fires HTHC to 14-goal thriller win and a playoff place

Harvestehuder THC completed the line-up for the German playoffs following an amazing final game of the season, winning 8-6 against Club an der Alster with four goals in the closing seven minutes.

Michael Körper added another four goals to his tally for the campaign, bringing his total to 46 from 22 games, 11 ahead of Mannheimer’s Gonzalo Peillat.

“To concede six times is a joke,” said HTHC coach Christoph Bechmann after the game, admitting “normally, you cannot win a game this way.”

Körper scored in the first minute but Harvestehuder found themselves 3-2 behind at half-time due to goals from Anton Boeckel, Constantin Staib and Johannes Große.

Boeckel made it 4-2 before Körper’s third goal and one from Daniel von Drachenfels levelled at 4-4 with 23 minutes to go. Alster scored again via Große and Staib for a 6-4 lead that they held until seven minutes from the end.

But HTHC summoned an amazing finish with Nick Spooner and Max Cordes levelling the tie at 6-6 before Körper put his side in front for a second time with two minutes to go. Leon Willemsen completed the victory.

It left them out of reach of Krefeld after they drew 2-2 with Rot-Weiss Köln. Rot-Weiss will meet HTHC in the playoffs semi-final while Mannheimer HC will face Uhlenhorst Mülheim.

Mannheim drew their derby with TSV to end third overall while second place Mülheim beat Nürnburg HTC 5-2.

Dragons ease to tenth Belgian national title

KHC Dragons won the Belgian title for a third successive season with a devastating 9-2 aggregate win over Herakles following the two legs this weekend.

Saturday saw Dragons run up a 5-1 win on Saturday, leading from the 11th minute via Jeffrey Thys from a penalty corner rebound. Thys then set up Florent van Aubel to divert in a second goal for 2-0 on the quarter-hour for Jean Willems’side.

Herni Raes extended the lead further from Thomas Verheijen’s assist for 3-0 and Felix Denayer put four goals in the difference. Van Aubel availed of perfect service from Thomas Briels to nab the fifth and an imposing lead going into the second tie.

With such a large gap, Herakles needed a strong start to Sunday’s second leg but Alexander Hendrickx’s penalty corner in the tenth minute further complicated matters.

It stayed 1-0 until the second half when extra goals from Raes and Arthur van Doren made the scoreline even more emphatic. Xavier Reckinger pulled one back but Raes got another goal for good measure in the last minute to add an extra flourish to the scoreline.

It earned Dragons a tenth Belgian title and gives them the perfect boost going into the EHL FINAL4 which they will host in a fortnight’s time.

Racing secure EHL spot with demolition of Waterloo Ducks

Racing Club de Bruxelles dominated their EHL playoff decider against Waterloo Ducks, winning out 10-4 overall to secure a place in ROUND1 next October courtesy of the success.

The writing was on the wall for the WatDucks after Saturday’s first leg when Racing tore their way to a 6-3 victory that put them in pole position.

And they completed the victory with the minimum of fuss on Sunday, running out 4-1 winners. Simon Gougnard – who moves to the WatDucks next term – scored the opening goal before Tom Boon’s penalty corner made it 2-0.

Cedric Charlier added the third before half-time and Boon’s second extended the lead to 4-0 before Blair Hilton scored a consolation goal.

Speaking after the tie to the Hockey Belgium website, Jérôme Truyens said: “We absolutely wanted to finish the season with this EHL ticket, it was a minimum target.

“We were very disappointed after the semi-finals because we did not hit our true level.

“The first leg put us in an excellent position and we played well. In the end, there was no match [in the second leg]. It was important to finish with these two great successes."

Ward back in black with Beeston for next season

Sam Ward will return to Beeston from Holcombe in an eye-catching transfer in the English league as the Nottingham club look to get back into the EHL frame.

The Bees finished fifth in England last season, five points outside the playoffs, but the return of Ward after a spell in Kent brings back the goal machine to the club for the next three seasons.

He joins England and GB teammates James Albery, Mark Gleghorne and Ollie Willars who have all agreed one year contract extensions while Mark Wadsley is also back with Beeston after a year withr Olton and West Warwickshire.

From overseas, German defender Marius Gemmel switches from Schwarz-Weiß Köln, Spanish Junior World Cup player Lucas Alcalde moves from Pozuelo and Belgian goalkeeper Simon Vandenbroucke, understudy to Vincent Vanasch at Waterloo Ducks, also arrives.

Matthew Crookshanks (Annadale) and Kyle Marshall (Banbridge) – members of the Irish Under-18 side last year – also add to their panel, moving across the Irish channel.

Kenya Police on Sunday came from behind to beat Sikh Union Nairobi 3-1 in a Kenya Hockey Union(KHU) men’s Premier League match at City Park Stadium.

The win preserved Police’s unbeaten start to the season as they secured their ninth win of the campaign. Police fell behind to a fifth minute strike by Sikh striker Shabaz Shah.

However, Police hit back through goals from Samuel Oungo, Samuel Wokila and Edmond Makona to maintain their 100 percent start to the season.

WOMEN'S LEAGUE

In the women’s Premier League, Amira Sailors secured a 2-0 win over Kenyatta University (KU) Titans 2-0 at the same venue.Susan Oketch and Pauline Naise were on target for their side.

Police stand-in coach Patrick Mugambi praised his charges fighting spirit warning other teams to expect such performances from his side. “We responded well after falling behind and the lads took control of the match brilliantly,” Mugambi told Nation Sport on Sunday.

“Nine wins out of nine is a good return from the side. I think teams will now fear facing us because we are on a roll,” he added.

Police were missing talismanic striker Moses Cheplaiti due to knee injury but welcomed back skipper Oliver Echenje. It was Sikh who started well and took the lead with their first chance of the game.

Davies Wanangwe lost his marker before releasing Shah who fired past Police keeper Martin Agesa. The goal stunned Police and they went in search of a way back in the game.

Wokila and Richard Birir twice threatened for Police but Sikh keeper Caleb Simiyu was up to task as his side took the slim lead to the end of the quarter.

Police piled more pressure in the second quarter and they were levelled four minutes after the restart. Felix Okoth’s short corner was finished by Oungo past a hapless Simiyu.

Three minutes later, Police went ahead again through another penalty corner. Okoth delivered another pin-point corner and Wokila sounded the board.

The game was effectively over as a contest in the 29th minute as Makona capitalised on a defensive mix-up to put his side three-up.

"We were unable to build on our good start and got caught on the break. It is disappointing to lose another match after playing so well, " Sikh captain Amit Rajput said.

In the men's National League, Multimedia University hit Parkroad Tigers 3-1. In the late games, Greensharks reclaimed second spot after a 2-1 win over visiting Nakuru Athletic Club, as USIU-A recorded their second win of the weekend after they hit Sliders 2-1 in a women's top flight encounter.

Sanjay, with two goals, starred for Chandigarh in the summit clash.

Five minutes before time, Sanjay recorded a brace, and a minute from the final whistle, Harpreet Singh made it 4-0.

SSTMI clinch seventh MJHL overall title

by Aftar Singh

Happy bunch: SSTMI Thunderbolt players and officials posing with the trophies and prizes after clinching the MJHL overall title last night. — M. AZHAR ARIF/The Star

KUALA LUMPUR: It is seventh heaven for Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI)-Thunderbolt in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

The Johor sports school edged Pahang Hockey Academy (AHP)-MSP-Thunderbolt 4-3 in a penalty shootout to win their seventh overall title in the final at the Tun Razak Hockey Stadium last night. The match ended 2-2 in regulation time.

SSTMI now boast a total of 13 titles in the Under-19 league, winning seven overall and six league crowns since 2010.

SSTMI, who were 2-1 winners over Pahang Hockey Academy 2-1 in the league, grabbed the lead after just nine minutes. Mohd Akhimullah Anuar Esook beat a defender in the semi-circle before hammering the ball past goalkeeper Muhd Hamiz Mohd Ahir. It was his 16th goal and it landed him the top scorer award.

But SSTMI’s joy was shortlived. Pahang Hockey Academy equalised a minute later through Muhd Hazzim Amin Hafidz from close range.

SSTMI then regained the lead in the 24th minute with Muhd Fikri Ammerrunizzar sounding the board off a penalty corner.

Pahang Hockey Academy went all out in the last quarter. They were rewarded when Mohd Idris Samad equalised in the 55th minute.

In the shootout, Mohd Hanif Saad, Syarman Mat Tee, Mohd Amirul Hamizan Azhar and Shello Silverius netted for SSTMI. In contrast, Pahang Hockey Academy could only manage to convert through Syamil Azim Dzulkafly, Muhd Izham Azhar and Wan Muhd Asyraf Ahmad Dzaib.

Said SSTMI coach Wan Roslan Wan Abdul Rahman: “Pahang Hockey Academy gave us a fierce fight. I’m relieved that my players did well in the shootout.

“It’s great to win the overall crown. But the other teams have improved a lot and we need to start preparing from now for next year’s league.”

Pahang Hockey Academy coach Mohd Sufian Mohamed was disheartened for failing to win their maiden title.

“We played our hearts out. It was rather unfortunate that we lost in the shootout. But I’m happy with my players’ commitment. We will be back with a much stronger team next year,” said Sufian.

It was a double delight for SSTMI as the girls’ team also emerged overall champions by beating Wipers Kuala Lumpur 3-2 in a sudden-death penalty shootout. The teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time.

Hasya Syahida Saifuddin gave the Wipers the lead in the fourth minute off a penalty corner. But SSTMI, who won the league title last week, equalised through Norrobiatun Norhisham in the 49th minute.

Nur Hafizah Maznan then starred for SSTMI, converting in the sudden-death shootout while Wipers’ Nur Natasha Mohd Asrul Effendi failed in her attempt.
