England's women beaten by ruthless Argentina

Lily Owsley v Argentina

Nine Rio Olympic gold medallists took to the pitch as England began its home World Cup campaign against a skilful Argentinean side in London today.

Playing for the first time at the Home of Hockey since beating the Netherlands in the final of the 2015 Unibet EuroHockey Championships, England lost by 5 goals to 1 to the ruthless Las Leonas.

Hannah Martin got her first international goal, and Maddie Hinch played her first international since Rio, while six players made a first England appearance on home soil.

It was a good learning exercise for Danny Kerry's side, and they will look to make further progress in Sunday's sold-out game with the Netherlands at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

Danny Kerry reaction

It was a very valuable lesson, lessons learned at this point in a cycle are even more valuable and the harder they are, the more they resonate. It's one thing to say to the players 'this is what we need to do,' now they understand the signifance of it.

Match report

England had the first clear chance after 4 minutes as Toman deflected wide from the game’s first penalty corner, but it was the Argentinians who got the better of the first quarter with Cavallero and Grannato going close. A good double save from Hinch from Barrionuevo meant the teams went into the first quarter break without a goal on the board.

This soon changed two minutes into the second quarter as Agustina Harif broke the deadlock, deflecting a penalty corner passed the helpless Amy Tennant who had replaced Hinch at the break. England reacted well with Owsley’s reverse stick shot narrowly going wide of the far post, before Surbiton’s Hannah Martin converted a well-worked penalty corner to score her first international goal in her 5th game. 1-1 after 22 minutes. The score stayed that way as the teams went into half time, as world ranked number 2 England began to exert a little more pressure.

Hinch, back between the sticks for the third quarter, was called upon a couple of times to keep the score level most notably from a fiercely struck Argentinian corner after 43 minutes. But, she could do nothing about another corner a minute later, as Cavallero clinically deflected the initial strike into the top right hand corner of goal. The challenge for England got even harder as Fernandez extended the lead after 48 minutes from another penalty corner.

Merino added to the home team's woes as the Argentinian number 12 dispatched a powerful reverse stick shot past Tennent to make it 4 and Agustina Habif completed the scoring England as she slid in back post to complete a good move seconds before the final whistle.

The new look England side will hope for a more positive scorline tomorrow as world number ones and World Cup Champions the Netherlands are the opponents. The game is live on BT Sport from 1.30pm.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women have been beaten 2-1 by hosts Spain in the first of four tests in Barcelona.

It was a challenging match for the Kiwis, who arrived in the heat of Europe just two days earlier.

Spain controlled much of the match in front of a vocal home crowd, in a clash which marked 25 years since the Spanish won an Olympic gold medal at the 1992 Games.

The hosts started well and opened the scoring in the 15th minute through a reverse shot at goal from Belen Iglesias.

The second quarter was much tighter and after Spain doubled their lead, the Black Sticks responded thanks to a Kirsten Pearce field goal in the 20th minute.

New Zealand battled hard in the second half but were unable to convert any chances into points in a goalless 30 minutes of play.

Black Sticks assistant coach Sean Dancer said it was a scrappy performance in tough conditions.

“Spain dominated large patches of the game today and as a team we were unable to control them well,” he said.

“We are looking forward to resting up, re-grouping and coming out with something to prove for tomorrow’s challenge.”

The Vantage Black Sticks play Spain in the second test at 6am Monday morning (NZT).

The four test series is part of New Zealand’s build-up for the FIH World League Semi Final in Brussels from 21 June – 2 July.

Hockey India (HI) has pruned down the list of core group probables of the junior men’s team to 33 players from 53 after an intense selection trials, which concluded last week at the SAI centre in Bengaluru.

The selected 33 players will continue their training at the national camp in Bengaluru for the upcoming tournaments. HI, on May 24, had named a total of 53 players for a five-week camp after the conclusion of the Hockey India 7th junior men national hockey championship.

During the course of the camp, the selection trials were conducted under the purview of HI’s Director High Performance, David John to identify a core group of players who will go on to represent the country at the upcoming tournaments.

The core group was selected on the basis of speed, agility, skill and basic understanding of the game. The aim behind organising the national camp for the juniors is to develop a core group of players for the 2020 Junior World Cup, where the team will be defending the coveted title won last year in Lucknow.

“These 33 players will go through a development process which will see them transform into a strong pool of players who can go on to represent the country in future international tournaments,” said John.

“We conducted selection trials last week where we have tried and tested all the 53 players on the basis of their basics, strength, skills, speed and understanding of the game, and have been able to select the 33 best players who will be prepared for the upcoming tournaments.

“One of the main criteria for their selection was also their age. Only those born on or after 1.1.1999 have been selected in the core group as this is the age cut off for the 2020 Junior World Cup,” he added.

Core Probables:

Goalkeepers: Pankaj Kumar Rajak, Tanuj Gulia, Prashant Kumar Chauhan, AS Sentamizh Arasu;

Defenders: Suman Beck, Prince, Dinachandra Singh Moirangthem, Mohd. Faraz, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Akshay Avasthi, Mandeep Mor, Pratap Lakra, Sanjay;
