Bloemendaal disrupt Hertzberger’s 200-goal celebrations

HC Bloemendaal came from a goal down to thump Rotterdam 5-1 in a big statement in the Hoofdklasse as EHL ROUND1 approaches quickly for the former side.

It was a meeting of two of last season’s playoff sides and Rotterdam opened well with Jeroen Hertzberger scoring his 200th goal in the top division to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

But, from there, Bloemendaal bossed things. Florian Fuchs equalised from a stroke before Glenn Schuurman added another from a corner. New arrival Tim Swaen scored the third before Roel Bovendeert got his first since returning from almost a year out injured. Fuchs netted his third of the season to complete the rout in the 48th minute.

"We were very effecient today," said Schuurman. "Against Den Bosch, we got seven or eight penalty corners and we did not score."
This time around, Schuurman scored at the first attempt. “Toppers like these are the games we measure ourselves and that gives us confidence."
AH&BC Amsterdam won the other big tie with a 4-3 success over Oranje-Rood who are still searching for their first win of the new campaign.

OR led twice in the first quarter with goals from Agustin Mazzilli and Bob de Voogd but replies from Boris Burkhardt and Tijn Lissone left the tie at 2-2 at half-time.

Casper Horn and a second from Burkhardt put Amsterdam 4-2 ahead with 19 minutes to go and they held on despite Mink van der Weerden’s late corner goal.

SV Kampong won their tie with HDM 6-0 courtesy of Martijn Havenga’s double and strikes from Philip Meulenbroek, Boet Phijffer, Sander de Wijn and Bjorn Kellerman.

They lead the table with Amsterdam with two wins from two with Bloemendaal, HGC, Den Bosch and SCHC two points back on four after two games.

Rühr hat trick gives Rot-Weiss big win over reigning German champions

©: Frank Uijlenbroek/world Sport Pics

A Christopher Rühr hat trick saw Rot-Weiss Köln keep their perfect record going at the start of the German season with a third win so far, beating Mannheimer HC 6-3 in a repeat of last year’s national final.

"For us, this idea of revenge was spoken about at all,” said André Henning afterwards. “We played a great game and won against a very strong opponent. We could not ask for more."

They did so in front of a big crowd with Marco Miltkau opening the scoring in the 17th minute, the only goal of a tactical first half battle.

The second half was much more open. Guido Barreiros equalised three minutes after the change of ends but four goals in a ten minute spell saw Rot-Weiss race into the distance.

Miltkau (40 ') and Jonas Gomoll (44') finished off with backhand strikes. Rühr made it 4-1 when he left four opponents in his wake before shooting home and he added a fifth goal from the penalty spot. Gonzalo Peillat pulled two back from corners but Rühr had the final say from a corner.

"We were not good enough today," said Mannheim coach Michael McCann. "We played well for 55 minutes but in a five-minute spell, we were not good. Köln scored three goals from three chances. If we want to play with the top teams, we have to be focused for the whole 60 minutes."

The win added to Rot-Weiss’s 1-0 win on Saturday against TSV Mannheim courtest of Mortiz Trompertz’s sveenth minute goal.

Uhlenhorst Mülheim had a mixed weekend in preparation for the EHL ROUND1 in Barcelona. They lost to fellow EHL side Mannheim 5-2 on Saturday but bounced back with a 4-2 win over TSV Mannheim.

Thilo Stralkowski scored twice, levelling the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute before completing the victory. They did fall 2-1 behind before Canadian international Keegan Pereira equalised and then Johannes Gans and Stralkowski netted in the last seven minutes to assure victory.

Mülheim's coach Omar Schlingemann was proud of his team’s fighting spirit: "Against Mannheim, we gave up too quickly. We did much better today, coming back twice with the boys fighting hard. That was a good thing.

“The game was not great, our passing accuracy was not that good and it was a bit like ping-pong but we did not give up.”

After three games, Rot-Weiss lead the table alongside Berliner HC with both sides winning all their matches to date.

Ben Somerford

Hockeyroos forward Kathryn Slattery scored two goals to lead Wesley South Perth to the WA Women’s Premier League premiership with a 2-1 win over Victoria Park Xavier on Saturday.

Slattery, who will represent WA at the upcoming Australian Hockey League (AHL) in Perth, opened the scoring after two minutes from a penalty corner.

Fellow Hockeyroos Laura Barden and Stephanie Kershaw were also on the triumphant side, while Rachael Lynch, Georgia Wilson and Jane Claxton played for the defeated Victoria Park Xavier side.

Slattery was awarded the Shirley Leece Medal for the Best and Fairest Player and said the victory was testament to how well her side had played all year.

“I’m very proud of the girls in that sense," she said. "There have been some tough battles and some quality teams. The games against Vic Park have been hard and I was a bit nervous coming into this one.

"Rachael Lynch is a fantastic ‘keeper and I knew we would be hard pressed to get goals by her.
“I’m overwhelmed. It’s been such a long time coming for WASPS and I’ve been with this club for so long. I love being part of this club – I’m overwhelmed. It’s been a fantastic year by the girls.”

In the WA Men’s Premier League Grand Final, Kookaburra Tom Wickham celebrated success with UWA defeating Trent Mitton and Matt Swann’s Wesley South Perth 2-1 on Saturday.\

Around the country, Doncaster defeated Altona 6-2 and Camberwell beat Powerhouse/St Kilda 4-2 to both progress to the Victorian Men’s Premier League Grand Final.

Hawthorn edged Greensborough 4-3, while Mentone defeated MCC 5-0 to book their spots in the Victorian Women’s Premier League Grand Final.

The goals keep coming in National League 1

Bromac Kelburne continued the quest for their 14th consecutive Scottish men’s National League 1 title with a 6-3 victory over Clydesdale at Titwood. There were hat-tricks for Johnny Christie from open play and also Josh Cairns from set pieces. Clydesdale`s replies came from Chris McFadden with two and Struan Walker.

Grange were not at their best but still managed to see off the challenge of Grove Menzieshill with a hard earned 2-1 win at Fettes. The Edinburgh side opened their account with a direct strike at a penalty corner by Dominic Wild.

Grange`s tally was doubled by a good finish from the top of the circle by Frank Ryan following a pass from John McCluskey. Albert Rowling pulled one back for the Taysiders from a rebound at a penalty corner just before the interval. There was no further scoring in the second half and Grange emerged with the three points.

Newly promoted Dundee Wanderers grabbed their first points in the top flight with a 4-0 win over Hillhead. The Dundonians were a goal up at the interval through Jack Fullerton.

Wanderers added to their tally in the second half, Bobby Ralph scored with a spectacular reverse stick shot, Fergus Sandison finished off his own solo run, and finally Fullerton added his own second of the contest.

Dundee Wanderers won their first three points of women`s National League 1 with a comfortable 5-0 win over Hillhead.

The Taysiders led by four goals at the interval, Amy Schelle scored the opening two goals, Jess Ross made it 3-0 while Amanda Maxwell added a fourth. Charlotte Watson scored the fifth with a powerful reverse stick shot early in the second half, thereafter Wanderers seemed to take their foot off the pedal for the rest of the game.

In the other fixture on Women’s National League 1, victory went the way of Grove Menzieshill in a solid 4-1 win over Grange.

Scottish Cup gets off to a roaring start

A shoot out to decide in the Scottish Cup tie between Western Wildcats and MC Clydesdale Western – photo by Duncan Gray

The game of the day in the first round of the women`s Scottish Cup saw Wildcats progress to the next stage after seeing off Milne Craig Clydesdale Western in a dramatic fashion at Auchenhowie.

The match finished 1-1 in normal time, Emma McDermaid got the home side`s goal while Heather Lang found the net of the visitors.

The resulting penalty shoot-out went into sudden death and the Wildcats` Aussie goalkeeper Danie McMurray made the match-winning save.

Dundee Wanderers progressed into the second round with a 5-0 win over Western`s second string, Amy Snelle scored twice while the other strikes came from Heidi Samson, Charlotte Watson and 16-year-old schoolgirl Darcy McDermott.

In the men`s cup competition three first division sides took the perilous trip up to Aberdeen – they all progressed to the next round – but experienced totally different experiences.

Clydesdale took on Granite City Wanderers of the second division and came away with a resounding 8-0 victory, top scorer was Ciaran Crawford with a nap hand.

Western Wildcats took on Aberdeen GS and were 2-0 winners, the goals came from Hamish Galt and Andrew McConnell from a penalty corner.

Newly promoted Dundee Wanderers were reduced to ten players during the contest but still managed to hang on to a narrow 2-1 victory, their goals came from Elliot Sandison and Callum Ross.

Other top flight sides had a much easier passage, both Grange and Inverleith progressed to the second round as a consequence of concessions.

Meanwhile on Tayside Grove Menzieshill put ten past Watsonians, top scorers were Paul Martin with a hat-trick and a double for Cammie Golden.

Elsewhere, third division Highland beat Harris from a higher division 4-0 to move into the second round draw.

Perhaps the closest contest was between Perthshire and Glasgow University, the contest ended 3-3 in normal time after the former had levelled with an overtime penalty corner, but the students had the final say with a 4-2 win in the resulting penalty shoot-out.

Kenyatta University (KU) Vultures on Sunday upset third-placed Greensharks 2-1 in a Kenya Hockey Union’s men’s Premier League match at the City Park Stadium, Nairobi.

The students, who had fallen behind to Kevin Simiyu’s 31st minute strike, levelled through Brian Nguru before skipper Oliver Cheloti grabbed the winner four minutes from the end.

The win saw the Vultures move from 13th spot to ninth place in the log, six points off the relegation zone. It was also sweet revenge after they lost 2-0 to Sharks in their first leg meeting on July 15 this year.

Vultures coach Moses Kagochi lauded his charges for their fighting spirit.

“We never stopped believing even after we fell behind, we gave it our all and eventually our determination was rewarded with the winning goal the death,” the coach said yesterday. It was Sharks’ fourth loss of the season and they are yet to win a match since the second leg began.

Last Saturday, they lost 2-1 to Sikh Union.

Earlier, Sikh Union’s resurgence continued after they thumped visiting Nakuru Hockey Club 4-0 in another men’s top-flight encounter at the same venue.

Goals from Collins Wingila, Shabaz Shah as well as Kenya internationals Francis Esikuri and Davies Wanagwe gave the 2012 champions the three points.

The result compounded a bad weekend for Nakuru who drew 1-1 with Wazalendo on Saturday. Sikh’s win moved them 28 points, a point behind Wazalendo who are in fourth place. Sikh coach Inderjit Matharu is confident his charges can scale up the log if they keep on winning games.

“Two out of two since the second leg begin, we expect tougher matches but so far we are pleased with how the team is going about their business,” the legendary former international told Nation Sport on Sunday.

Sikh went ahead after just eight minutes when Wingila coolly finished off Wanangwe’s dragged short corner leaving Nakuru keeper Frank Njue with no chance.

The Nairobi-based side doubled their lead the quarter mark as Sikh rip the Nakuru defence apart and Shah sounded the board to give his side a two-gal advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Nakuru were guilty of missed chances in the next three quarters and were dully punished in the last seven minutes of the match as Sikh scored two goals in a minute to put the game past their opponents’ reach.

In the last game of the day, Parkroad Badgers piled more pressure on relegation-threatened Kenya College of Accountancy University (KCA-U) with a 2-1 win.

In Saturday’s late matches, bottom placed Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lost their second successive match in a week after they went down 3-0 to United States International University of Africa (USIU-A ) as Western Jaguars drew 1-1 with visiting Chase Sailors in Kakamega.

In the men’s National League, Karate Axiom drew 0-0 with University of Nairobi as Impala drew 1-1 with Wazalendo Masters.

Former champions seek to reclaim league title.

Former Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League champions Nairobi Sikh Union yesterday continued with their impressive form, thrashing visitors Nakuru HC 4-0 at City Park in Nairobi.

In another league encounter, United States International University Africa (USIU-A) routed debutantes Technical University of Kenya (TUK) 3-0.

Sikh Union, who are seeking to reclaim the title they last won in 2012, staged one of their best performances this season to chalk up maximum points.

They scored two first-quarter goals from Collins Winjila and Shabaz Shah, and two more from Francis Esikuri and Davis Wanangwe in the final period.

Winjila laid bare Sikh Union’s intentions just eight minutes into play through a successful penalty corner conversion that gave his side a 1-0 advantage.

Despite taking an early lead, the 2012 champions, who are seeking to end a four-year trophy drought, did not relent in their goal hunt and surged on in search of the second.

Their efforts paid off a few seconds to the break of the first quarter when Shah netted following a well co-ordinated exchange between him, midfielder Allan Iningu, Esikuri and Wanangwe.

Nakuru goalkeeper Frank Njue failed the test when he let Shah’s goal in as Sikh Union led 2-0 ahead by the quarter hour mark.

In the second period, Nakuru, led by captain Dolcan Mugaisi, seemed to have settled early as they enjoyed a greater percentage of ball possession.

They played offensively, making several attempts, but their efforts were thwarted by Sikh Union’s long-serving and reliable goalkeeper, Ajay Dosaja, who remained unshaken in goal.

Both sides failed to utilise their chances in the second and third quarters as the former title holders maintained their 2-0 lead.

Penalty corner

International Esikuri converted a penalty corner to make it 3-0 in the 53rd minute.

Sikh Union were home and dry a minute later when Wanangwe scored a fantastic field goal to give his side the resounding victory.

Despite the loss, Nakuru walked away with a point from their 1-1 draw against Wazalendo. Mugaisi said Sikh Union were the stronger side.

“We fought hard but they were the better side. Even though we lost, we leave better than we came because we carry with us invaluable lessons ahead of our upcoming matches,” he said.

Brian Kiplimo, Victor Chidi and Brian Makokha scored for USIU-A against their hapless TUK counterparts.

Maryland field hockey beats Bucknell, 4-1, for its fourth straight win

By Scott Gelman

During halftime of the Maryland field hockey team's 4-1 win against Bucknell on Sunday, head coach Missy Meharg urged the No. 9 Terps to consider the theme of the last few weeks before taking shots. Maryland's roster boasts six freshman, so the coaching staff urged the team to prioritize making connections.

That meant emphasizing personal skills and understanding how the players can help their teammates. It also resulted in practicing two-touch passes and executing when in the offensive zone.

On Sunday, that cohesive outlook helped the Terps capitalize on their 13 penalty corner opportunities. Though midfielder Lein Holsboer has served as the primary passer off such attempts in the past, Meharg put different players in unusual places during penalty chances against the Bison.

Maryland connected, securing its fourth straight win in advance of hosting No. 15 Princeton on Tuesday night.

"We work so hard in practice to get everyone in the right spot and having big variety on our corners," Holsboer said. "We just work really hard capitalizing on those opportunities."

The Terps were unable to execute on their first four attempts, but still, Maryland's various penalty corner tactics kept the Bison guessing on the Terps' fifth try.

Freshman midfielder Kyler Greenwalt sent the ball in defender Bodil Keus' direction, but her shot was saved. The dynamic of Maryland's personnel, though, left Greenwalt positioned in front of the left-corner of the net. She tucked the ball into the lower-left corner of an unguarded net to give Maryland a one-goal edge.

The Terps took that advantage into the intermission and capitalized on one of their six first-half penalty corner attempts. The backline, meanwhile, didn't allow the Bison (3-6) to attempt a shot in the opening period, the second time Maryland's defense has held a team without a shot in a half this season.

"We're always going to have a variety," Meharg said. "You're going to see a lot of different people and a lot of different looks on our penalty corners because we're playing a super front field, high pressing running game, so we're going to play a lot of people."

Bucknell opened the second half with an aggressive offensive approach, which  enabled forward Nicole Rupnik to breakaway and tie the game at one minute into the second half. Still, Maryland's distinct strategy on its corner attempts helped it establish a substantial lead.

In the 43rd minute, Holsboer passed the ball to defender Carrie Hanks, who was also integrated into Maryland's corner game Sunday. Hanks sent the ball back to Holsboer in the left side of the circle, and Holsboer deposited it into the upper-left corner to push Maryland's lead to three.

By the time Holsboer scored the second time about a minute later, the game was seemingly out of reach. The Bison earned just three corner attempts, and Maryland boasted a 36-6 shooting advantage.

After similarly taking advantage of corner opportunities in their conference opener against Indiana on Friday, the Terps' different personnel groupings on penalty attempts Sunday led them to their third straight home victory.

"Corners are a huge deal," Greenwalt said. "Once you get a corner, it's a guaranteed shot on goal."

No. 2 Penn State field hockey suffers first loss of the season to Delaware

Accustomed to winning games with suffocating defense and timely scoring, No. 2 Penn State found itself on the opposite end of the spectrum on Sunday.

The defending national champion Delaware Blue Hens handed the Nittany Lions their first loss of the season in a 2-0 affair, as they stifled the Penn State offense through all 70 minutes of action.

Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans was the cause of much of Penn State’s offensive frustration. Oltmans was tested on eight separate occasions by the Nittany Lions, but held firm in the cage each time to preserve the shutout.

The Blue Hens put themselves in position to turn the game into a defensive struggle from the very beginning, beating Penn State’s Jenny Rizzo in the game’s sixth minute to go ahead 1-0.

From there, the game turned stagnant. Neither team found the back of the cage for the rest of the first half as Delaware carried its slim lead into the break.

The Blue Hens scored again about 10 minutes into the second half to double their lead. In such a defensive struggle, a 2-0 advantage was just about insurmountable for the Nittany Lions, who never gained anything resembling offensive traction throughout the game.

No. 6 Blue Hens beat No. 2 Penn State in field hockey

In a showdown between two of the best collegiate field hockey teams in the country, No. 6 Delaware blanked No. 2 Penn State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The contest was played at The Nook in Manheim, Pa.

Senior goalie Emmeline Oltmans made eight saves as the Blue Hens (6-1) held a No. 1 or No. 2-ranked opponent scoreless for the first time in program history. Oltmans made a crucial stop on Madison Morano’s penalty stroke in the 52nd minute.

The loss was the first of the season for the Nittany Lions (7-1).

“Wow, what a game for the field hockey fans to enjoy,” said Delaware coach Rolf van de Kerkhof. “Two great teams, tons of actions, many momentum changes and a true battle to lock up this Delaware victory. A big compliment to our players group and their commitment to preparation the entire week for this game.

“This is our team’s best overall performance and hopefully they are aware and understand that when they want it they can compete for it. After every game the team usually votes for a ‘Blue Hen Warrior,’ but today it was very clear the team is the Blue Hen Warrior.”

Junior Lisa Giezeman notched the first goal of the game in the sixth minute as she collected the pass from classmate Greta Nauck.

Fellow junior Kiki Bink registered the second and final goal of the contest in the 46th minute. Senior Taylor Lister assisted on the play, which was set up by a penalty corner.

The Hens snapped a five-game losing streak to the Nittany Lions. Penn State outshot Delaware, 17-11, and held the 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

No. 7 UNC field hockey shuts out James Madison, 3-0

Jake Schmitz

The No. 7 UNC field hockey team dominated the first half in its 3-0 win over No. 13 James Madison. It was the team's second consecutive "home" game at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham.

What happened?

The Tar Heels’ offense started off strong with two quick shots before scoring nearly three minutes in. Junior midfielder Eva van’t Hoog scored her first goal of the season off an assist from senior forward Gab Major.

Just two minutes after subbing in, sophomore forward Megan DuVernois doubled the Tar Heels’ lead with a goal off of an assist from sophomore Catherine Hayden in the eighth minute of the first half.

In addition to an impressive offensive start for UNC, the Tar Heels’ defense held the Dukes without a shot until McKenzie Ridgely’s attempt 12 minutes in after a penalty corner.

After an impressive goal late in the first half from Hayden, the Tar Heels’ offense began to slow down.

Although they still dominated in shots throughout the game (22 to JMU’s 9), UNC’s offense couldn’t capitalize in the second and failed to score off any of the six penalty corners it attempted.

Who stood out?

Hayden and van’t Hoog played a major role in the Tar Heels’ win. Each finished with a goal and an assist. These goals mark Hayden’s second and van’t Hoot’s first of the season.

Although the score says otherwise, JMU goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler performed well against a barrage of Tar Heel attempts, leaving the game with seven saves.

Why does it matter?

The game marks UNC’s fourth win against a top-20 team, which should build confidence for the Tar Heels as they sit at 6-2 on the season (1-1 ACC).

The Tar Heels also extended their win streak to three games, the streak marked by a nail-biting overtime victory over Boston College and a 6-1 show of force over Appalachian State.

Who do they play next?

The Tar Heels will face Davidson this Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Durham.
