Indian women played some of their most impressive hockey in recent times but ended up on the losing side against the Netherlands, going down 1-0 in Rourkela on Wednesday as scoring woes continued.

The Netherlands got what they wanted — a stern challenge from India amid partisan support of around 10,000 in the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela on Wednesday. The FIH Pro League women’s result, however, was 1-0 to the World, Olympic, and European champions and holders of the title. But it’s a scoreline that may feel like a draw for the Indian ladies.

South African Hockey5s captain mesmerised crowds in Muscat Oman with her clinical prowess in front of goal netting a remarkable return of 11 goals for the South Africans. One of her goals stood out amongst peers. In the group game Australia, South Africa secured their place with a brilliant win. The outstanding moment of the game came in the 20th minute as Rea Phume’s shot was deflected skywards. Marks instinctively played the ball in the air producing an unstoppable scoop over the keeper and translating South Africa’s domination onto the pitch onto the scoreboard.

Gurdev Singh Kullar
Gurdev Singh Kullar who represented India at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games, where India won her sixth consecutive Gold Medal, and who captained India at the Jakarta 1962 Asian Games where India won the Silver medal died on 8 February 2024 in Leeds, England.
Playing as inside right in the Melbourne Games with Udham Singh Kullar as left inside and Balbir Singh Senior as centre forward, they scored 24 of India’s 38 goals scored and conceded none.
The three of them represented Punjab Police and Punjab during the 1950s and early 1960s
Gurdev was born on 12 August 1933 in Sansarpur, Punjab and studied at Cantonment High School in Jalandhar. His father, Thakur Singh, was in the Army and toured New Zealand and Australia with the Indian Army Hockey Team in 1926 (India’s first overseas trip).
Gurdev Singh made his mark while a student in Jalandhar. He represented India at the Youth Festival in Poland in 1956.
He joined Punjab Police in 1956 and played for Punjab Police and Punjab from 1956 to 1967.
He toured New Zealand and Australia in 1961 with Indian Wanderers Team.

He was a member the Gold Medal winning Punjab Team in National Hockey Championship in Bhopal 1962 where he was the Captain and Bombay 1965; Bronze Medal in Hyderabad 1961, Madras 1963 and Delhi 1964.
He was a member of the Gold Medal winning Punjab Police Hockey Team in All India Police Games in Gwalior 1956, Calcutta 1959, Hyderabad 1961, Trivandrum 1962, Jaipur 1964 and Guwahati 1966. He was in the Bronze Medal Team in Delhi in 1960.
He was in the Punjab Police team that won the Beighton Cup in 1966, scoring the winning goal against Signals team.
He played at the Tokyo 1958 Asian Games where India won the Silver Medal and was Captain at the Jakarta 1962 Asian Games where India won the silver medal.
He retired from international hockey in 1962 and immigrated to the UK in 1967.
He played for Airedale Hockey Club and Bingley Hockey Club in Leeds, UK.
A stamp featuring the hockey final at Melbourne Olympics was issued by Dominican Republic in 1958 and Gurdev Singh and Balbir Senior are featured on this stamp.
He died on Thursday 8th February 2024 at St. James Hospital Leeds, aged 90.
