Australia’s men and women maintain perfect records

India’s women secure qualification in dramatic fashion and three-way scramble for second place in men’s Pool A set up after big Indian win



Australia’s women made it 4 wins from 4 while India secured their place in the semi-final in dramatic fashion to round out the morning session. India’s men registered a big win over Canada in the first game of the afternoon, while Wales kept their hopes of semi-final alive following a win over Ghana. The evening session began with a thriller between Pakistan and Scotland’s men, with Pakistan edging the tie and keeping their slim hopes of qualification alive. A packed day was ended by Australia making it 3 wins from 3, securing their top spot in Pool A.

The Hockeyroos have ended the pool stage and celebrated Madison Fitzpatrick’s 100th game with a 2-0 win over Scotland, their fourth straight triumph of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Scotland’s women lost 2-0 to Australia in their final pool match at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. An incredibly brave, disciplined performance at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre just wasn’t enough to beat the third best team in the world.

It was a fight to the very end between India and Canada women as they battled for a place in the semi-finals of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Canada needed just a draw to progress, while for India nothing less than a win would do.

The Indian women’s hockey team made heavy weather of their early dominance before eventually weathering the Canadian resistance to snuff out a 4-2 win to sneak into the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Indian eves did the most important thing of wresting the initiative when Salima Tete drew first blood as early as the third minute of play off a Gurjit Kaur penalty corner routine.

The Indian women’s hockey team survived some anxious moments before beating the lower-ranked Canada 3-2 in its must-win Pool A match to qualify for the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games here today.

India came into this important match on the back of a fast-paced and intensely competitive encounter with England the day before. It was obvious from the first few minutes of the match that Canada would be hard-pressed to contain the Asian side as they sought to stamp their authority on the game from the off.





Indian Men Pour Out ‘England-Draw Frustration’ on Hapless Canada


There was much at stake for the Indian men’s hockey team after their truly forgettable tie against England in a game, where card indiscipline saw them settle for a 4-4 draw after leading 4-1 at one juncture when they locked horns with Canada. Indians maintained the same tempo exuded against England (for three quarters) against Canada and seemed determined to correct the ‘wrongs’ of the England tie. Balraj Panesar kept Canada in the contest with a superb goalline clearance of a power-packed Harmanpreet Singh penalty corner and that was the lone high point of the Canadian deep defence as India thereafter swarmed over the opposition defence like stinging bees.





India thumps Canada 8-0, moves top of Pool B

The Indian men’s hockey team bettered its already impressive head-to-head record against Canada to 27-4, flooring the side 8-0 in a Commonwealth Games Pool B encounter at the University of Birmingham. Manpreet Singh and Co, with seven points from three games, have now moved to the top of the group, and have one foot in the semifinals.

England and Wales Hockey have put in a “compelling” bid to host the men’s 2026 Hockey World Cup, which includes using three top rugby club stadia and staging the finals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to interfere with the order of the Delhi High Court to form a three-member committee of administrators to manage the affairs of Hockey India till its constitution is amended and elections are held in accordance with the National Sports Code.
