Goal-fests, Tight Wins, Entertaining Draws: The First Day at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024



The first day of the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 saw ten games cover a full spectrum of results across venues in both Ranchi and Valencia. The Spanish women freely scored seven past Malaysia, whilst USA stunned hosts India in a tight 1-0 win. The late downpour of goals from Egypt and Korea’s men in a 4-4 thriller, was a far different game to the Irish women’s solid 0-0 draw against a threatening Belgium. The variety of results have begun to shape the standings in the pool stage, with draws meaning that several teams sit on level points. It was a promising first step on the road to Paris, showing a hint of what these qualifiers have in store for players and fans alike.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian women's hockey team held on until half-time before Spain opened the floodgates to hammer them 7-0 in Group A of the Olympic Qualifier in Valencia on Saturday.

Ranchi: Pre-tournament favourites Germany produced a power-packed outing to defeat lower-ranked Chile 3-0 to open their campaign on a rousing note in the FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifier in Ranchi on Saturday.

It took World No. 5 Germany, less than 90 seconds to earn the first Penalty Corner against Chile, but skipper Nike Lorenz’s low drag flick went wide of the right post.

A 1-0 upset of hosts India got the American Olympic qualifying campaign to a sensational start and silenced a partisan crowd. Abigail Tamer’s goal in the 16th minute proved decisive in a taut contest in which the referral denied either team a goal.





India’s road to Olympics gets tougher with loss to USA

Numbers might say India dominated possession and shots at goal and lost by a solitary goal but on field, but, it was a disjointed team that made basic errors and just could not find a way past the USA defence.

India did not have the best of starts in the FIH Women’s Olympic Qualifier, losing 0-1 to USA in their opener here on Saturday, and the team’s chief coach Janneke Schopman admitted that her side didn’t play to their strength.

Selin Oruz: An aspiring pediatrician guarding the defence for Germany at the Olympic Qualifiers

Oruz, whose parents are also doctors, won bronze at 2016 Rio Olympics with Germany as an 18-year-old. The defender also took part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where the German team finished sixth.

Not many can say that they have a degree in medicine as well as an Olympic medal in field hockey. Both are extremely tough fields and requires a lot of dedication.
