It was mission accomplished for four women’s teams as the USA, Spain, Germany and Belgium successfully secured their places in Paris by winning their respective semi-finals at the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Ranchi, India and Valencia, Spain on Thursday.

Pakistan earned a hard fought 3-3 draw against Malaysia to book a place in the semi-finals of the Olympic Qualifiers Tournament in Muscat, Oman.
In their last pool B match, Green Shirts required to avoid defeat to secure 2nd place in the race to remain in contention for medal position, which would hand them entry for the Paris Olympics. They will now face World champions Germany in Saturday’s semi final.
With the clock running down to final seconds of the match and the score standing at 3-3, Malaysia forced a penalty corner and its conversion would have extinguished Pakistan’s hopes of playing in the 2024 Olympics. Green Shirt’s defence stood firm to deny Malaysia’s gallant effort.
Earlier in the contest, Pakistan penetration in the opening minute did not materialise in an early lead. Malaysia broke the deadlock in the 2nd quarter, however Pakistan converted their very first penalty corner with a precise strike by Sufyan Khan.
Malaysia took a deserved lead after a lengthy referral led to a penalty corner which Abu Kamal converted on the stroke of half time.
In 33rd minute, Pakistan’s captain Ammad Butt went on a dazzling solo run and cutting in from the right slotted home to bring the teams level at 2-2.
Malaysia rallied and Pakistan’s goalkeeper saved a penalty stroke before Ashari Firhan gave them the lead in the 3rd quarter.
With both sets of supporters in full cry for the first time in the tournament, Pakistan were indebted to Rana Ashraf as he connected to a cross from the right to score for the equaliser. Despite a lengthy referral the goal was eventually allowed.
Green Shirts held out for the remaining 8 minutes for a crucial draw.
Today is a rest day
The other semi final will be between Great Britain and New Zealand.
The medalist at the tournament will qualify for the Paris Olympics.

The final straight towards the Paris Olympics began in earnest for the South African Women’s Hockey team in Cape Town. On the day that USA, Germany, Spain and Belgium secured their places at the Olympics, South Africa were beginning a six-test battle against Olympic Hosts France at SACS in the Western Cape.
