France and Pakistan joined New Zealand in the semi-finals of the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup Poland 2023/24 after playing out a 11-goal thriller.

Pakistan defeated by France (5-6) but progress to semi-finals

By Shahid Khan

Green Shirts final pool match at FIH Nations Cup, Gniezno, Poland produced another stunning come back from them but were eventually pipped by the French in an eleven-goal thriller.

Coming to the final Pool match Green Shirts were unbeaten after earlier two matches against Malaysia (4-4), Canada (8-1)

Although starting the match at frantic pace, Pakistan were unable to force penetrations into the circles to gain ascendancy. Olympic bound, France weathered the early storm and soon settled to their European style.

Green Shirts succumbed to the sustained French pressure and the found themselves 2-0 down at the end of the first quarter. Pakistan were overwhelmed in the 2nd quarter as the Olympic bound French team scored two further goals.

With four goals deficit it appeared that a heavy defeat for Pakistan would deny them 2nd position in the pool and allow Malaysia to progress instead in goal difference.

Green Shirts were stirred into recovery mode as Abu Mahmood converted penalty stroke after and infringement by the French custodian. two minutes later Murtaza Yakoob slotted home a penalty corner to make the score 4-2 at halftime.

Immediately on resumption of the game Rana Waheed having rounded the goalkeeper but missed to reduce the deficit. Powerfully built Victor Charles added his third from an unstoppable penalty corner drag flick.

Going into the final quarter with the score standing at 5-2, Rana Waheed gave them belief in the opening minute by scoring from close range.  Abdul Rehman added a third for Green Shirts as French team were having to defend stoutly. Spearhead Shahid Hannan followed up an indirect penalty corner to bring the teams to parity at 5-5 with 4 minutes remaining.

A dubious decision by the young English umpire to hand Murtaza Yakoob yellow card hampered Green Shirts final push for an unbelievable victory. At which stage Pakistan having been reduced to 9 men conceded penalty corner which Victor capitalised to give them a last gasp victory.

Victor Charlet of France was full of praise for Pakistan after winning the match and said: “It’s hard to describe this game - lots of goals. Against a huge hockey nation like Pakistan, you have to be good as they have many great players. You have to be focused and defend well as they are skilful. It’s not our best game but we are happy with the win.”

Pakistan will play New Zealand in Saturday’s semifinal, the Kiwis having the topped the other Pool with 4 victories. France’s opponents will be decided after the final pool A games on Thursday.
