Pakistan faced a 2-1 loss against New Zealand in the FIH Nations Cup semi-final in Gnienzo, Poland on Saturday.

Green Shirts conceded a goal in the 2nd minute when New Zealand converted their early penalty corner through Kane Russel. Kiwis started dictating the tempo of the game and when they won a turnover in the midfield rounded off a flowing attacking move to double the lead.

Once again, as has been the case in all their previous 3 games in the tournament Green shirts had to mount a recovery.  No further goals ensued despite some favourable chances created by the Kiwis as the score stood 2-0 at half time.

In the final quarter Green Shirts increased their intensity and saw Rana Wadood’s attempt come off the underside of the bar with the Kiwi goalkeeper beaten. Eventually with 5 minutes of the match remaining, a lightning run from the left saw Rana Waheed able to deflect a cross into the goal.

However Green Shirts despite frantic efforts in the dying minutes were unable to force an equaliser as they succumbed once gain to the Kiwis who had eliminated them at the Olympic qualifier in January.

Pakistan will play third-place with South Africa on Sunday. New Zealand’s opponents in the final will be France.
