Argentina take bronze after shoot-out against Belgium in Paris

By Jawwad Qamar

Argentina needed the heroics of Cristina Cosentino in goal to get past Belgium in the shoot-out after 60 minutes of regulation play ended at 2-2 for the bronze medal in Paris.

Cosentino thwarted attempts by Belgium’s Charlotte Englebert, and Vanessa Blockmans, allowed Justin Rasir to score keeping Belgium’s hopes alive but then made another brilliant save on the fourth shooter, Stephanie Vanden Borre, to quash those hopes. For Las Leonas, Lara Casas scored; Julieta Jankunas’ attempt was stopped by the Belgium keeper, Aisling D’Hooghe. However, Zoe Diaz de Armas and Sofia Cairo succeeded to bring home the bronze medal.

Interestingly, Cosentino was involved in another shoot-out on Monday, in the quarterfinals, against the powerhouse Germany and saved all four shots she faced then. Definitely a must for goalkeeper of the tournament consideration.

Belgium keeper Aisling D’Hooghe making a last second penalty corner save against Agustina Albertarrio.

In regulation play, fans saw entertaining hockey but all the scoring took place in the first two quarters. Emma Puvrez gave Belgium a lead pouncing on a penalty corner rebound in the eight minute. Agustina Gorzelany replied on a penalty corner tally, up into the right corner, in the 22nd minute for Argentina and teammate Agustina Albertarrio put Las Leonas ahead, five minutes later, diving from the left on a goalmouth scramble. However, Rasir responded right back with a penalty corner strike to level things at 2-2.

Both goalkeepers made splendid saves late in the match, with Belgium’s D’Hooghe making two superb penalty corner blocks in the closing seconds to force the shoot-out.

This win gave Las Leonas their sixth Olympic medal in their last seven appearances. They won silver at 2000 Sydney, 2012 London and 2021 Tokyo Olympics and bronze medals at 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Netherlands women make it a Dutch double with gold against China after shoot-out in Paris

By Jawwad Qamar

Netherlands were the huge favorites to take the gold against China having blanked them in pool play 3-0. However, Australian legend Alyson Annan coached team from Asia had other plans and went on board quickly as Chen Yi scored in the sixth minute of the first quarter, deflecting in a pass from Dan Wen.

After this goal, China went into defensive mode frustrating the Dutch. It took the reigning Olympic, World, and European champions 51 minutes to finally level score much to the delight of a very large number of their fans and much to the relief of their coaches as Yibbi Jansen scored with a drag flick on her team’s fourth penalty corner.

Yibbi Jansen and teammates celebrating her tying goal

This was Jansen’s tournament leading ninth penalty corner goal and it could have not come at a better time. She not only made her country proud, she made her father Ronald, a legendary Dutch goalkeeper with gold medals from 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well as 1998 Utrecht World Cup, very proud.

The Dutch women frantically looked for a winning tally in the remaining last minutes but the Chinese held firm, sending the match into the shoot-out.

The Dutch took over in the shootout as Pien Sanders, Maria Verschoor scored. Freeke Moes was not so lucky but Marijn Veen put the fourth attempt in while their goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal did her job denying He Jiagxin, Zou Meirong and Ma Ning with outstanding saves. Zhong Jiaqi was the only Chinese player to put the ball behind her.

Kuddos to China for a valiant effort. Not many predicted them to be in the gold medal game. Absolutely a great job by both the players and the coaching staff led by the Aussie legend Annan.

This is Netherlands fourth Olympic gold medal from the last five Olympics, a feat not too many nations can claim!  The Dutch also became the first nation to win two hockey golds at the same Olympics after the men's team won their final on Thursday on a shoot-out as well.

Shoot-outs were the order of the day for women’s medal round as Argentina took bronze earlier, beating Belgium on a shoot-out as well.
