Perfect starts for favourites on day 1 of FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023



Pool A and Pool D got underway on day 1 of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 as the action began in Bhubaneswar and finished in Rourkela.





Argentina edge South Africa in opener



1 489 days since Belgium lifted their first ever FIH Hockey World Cup title at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, the same venue played host to the opening game of the next edition. FIH Hockey Nations Cup champions South Africa taking on the 2016 Olympic champions Argentina.





Argentina toil to beat South Africa 1-0 opener

After a barren and hard-fought first two quarters, Argentina scored the winner in the 42nd minute through a field effort from Casella Maico.

Bhubaneswar: Jeremy Hayward and Tom Craig scored a hat-trick each, first of the tournament, to hand Australia a convincing 8-0 win over France in a Pool A match of the FIH men’s hockey World Cup here on Friday.





Kookaburras send early statement with rout of France



It was the Tom and Jerry show at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar as the Kookaburras opened their 2023 World Cup campaign with an 8-0 demolition of France.





Australian Masterclass Overwhelm France



World number one Australia weathered some initial resistance from France before they slipped into fifth gear and racked up a ridiculously lop-sided 8-0 win in a Pool A tie at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. The Kookaburras, who missed on World Cup glory in the 2018 edition at the same venue after they outduelled in a shootout by the Netherlands in the semifinals, seized the initiative from the French via a first-quarter goal by Tom Craig. However, France fought resolutely and kept blunting out whatever was thrown at them by the Aussies.

India’s planning was perfect. Their execution near flawless. The hosts proved their credentials as medal contenders with one of their most astute, stoic and focused performances in recent times. The significance of the stage — the opening match of a home World Cup in front of 20 thousand roaring fans — did not unsettle them. The familiar yet tricky opponent — Spain had proved to be a difficult side to overcome for India in their Pro League ties last year — could not outwit them.

Pakistan, the most successful team in the history of the Hockey World Cup, are conspicuously absent even as the 2023 edition kicked off in Odisha on Friday. Though Pakistan won the title the last time 29 years ago, no team has been able to match their four title wins even today.
