Unlike major football tournaments, hockey does not have the final pool games played simultaneously. This becomes easier for teams playing later as they go in knowing the mathematics of qualifying for the next round. On a day when Bhubaneswar hosted four games back-to-back, India were scheduled to play the final game at prime time. So, when the buzzer went off marking the end of the game between England and Spain, India knew what they had to do to finish first in the group – win by a margin of eight goals.

Hockey Social: Belgium’s Nicolas de Kerpel

In our regular anything goes Q&A, we speak to players and coaches on topics ranging from temptations, influences, fashion sense and match teas. This time: Belgium and Red Lion Nico de Kerpel.

The greatest ever? Belgium’s quest for hockey immortality

No men's hockey team has ever successfully repeated as Olympic and world champions in the same eight-year window. But in the next two years, the Red Lions of Belgium have an opportunity to achieve this almost mythological feat.

By William Imbo

In the next two years, Belgium’s men’s hockey team could enter into the pantheon of sporting legends. Of course, one may argue that they are already there. They are, after all, the defending Olympic and world champions. Multiple nations have achieved the feat of winning Olympic and world hockey gold in the span of two years, but what about winning back-to-back Olympic and world championships? Well now, that’s something that’s never been achieved before. Throw in a possible European title into the mix, and you move past the historic and into the legendary.

Penalty Corner Scenario: Mere 19 out of 150

K. ARUMUGAM

In the 80s, South Korea in Asia and before that a select few top hockey powers in Europe set the benchmark in the art of penalty corner conversion, making it a trump for success formula. This led to abolition of off-side rule so that field goals can regain its pride of place. Super specialty in the penalty corner area helped likes of South Korea scale high in the global hockey hierarchy. From nowhere it unseated both giants India and Pakistan from top. Asian Games history in these two decades would vouchsafe for this. The Netherlands did the same to other powers.
