South Africa's women have made winning start to their title defence at hockey's Africa Cup of Nations in Accra.





South African Hockey Men outclass Namibia in Opening match



The South African Hockey Men looked to continue their domination over their Namibian counterparts as they began their quest to defend the African Cup of Nations title once again. Namibia, missing all players selected for the now cancelled FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup were always going to be up against it facing the African Champions, missing several players themselves.

The South African Women opened their defence of their African title with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Southern African neighbours Zimbabwe. The game which marked both teams opening to the tournament as well as the first game for head coach Inky Zondi, presented as a typical opening game as both teams missed opportunities that they will expect to do better with as the tournament progresses.

Besides defending the title, a spot in this year's FIH Women's World Cup will be at stake for the Indian women in the Asia Cup to be held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex from January 21 to 28.

The home-and-away format will make a return in this season's Malaysia Hockey League (MHL), which starts on Feb 18 and ends in June.





LESCO win Wapda Hockey Tournament in Pakistan

LAHORE  -   Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has won the All Wapda Inter Unit Hockey Tournament played under the aegis of Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) at Astroturf Hockey Stadium Jhang. According to FESCO spokesman, hockey teams of FESCO, LESCO, GEPCO, PESCO, HESCO, QESCO, MEPCO, IESCO and NTDC participated in this tournament.

The FIH Rules of Hockey are updated in the January following the Olympic Games or FIH Hockey World Cups. FIH Sport Director and double-Olympian Jon Wyatt introduces the main Rules changes, which have just come into force.

In its bid to make the sport safer for its athletes, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has allowed players defending penalty corners to keep their protective equipment on even after the ball goes outside the striking circle, but must remove them at the first opportunity inside the 23m area.
