Pakistan to play Malaysia in the opening match
By Shahid Khan

Pakistan’s men’s hockey team will feature in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup be played in Gniezno, Poland from 31 May to 9 June 2024.
Green Shirts recently impressed during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia where they remained unbeaten and managed to win silver medal after losing to Japan in the final on a penalty shootout,
Pakistan hockey was at an all-time low when they failed to qualify for the Olympics, where they won three gold medals, for the third consecutive time earlier this year. Additionally, the Green Shirts also failed to qualify for the World Cup, where they bagged gold four times in the past, last year.
However, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup proved to be a breath of fresh air for hockey fans after Pakistan qualified for the final of the event for the first time in 13 years.
The Nations Cup is important because the winning team will be promoted to the elite FIH Hockey Pro League for the 2024-25 season
Pakistan will play the curtain raiser against Malaysia on Friday. Ironically, the teams met in the opening day’s fixture at the recently concluded Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia. Although Pakistan trailed 3-1 in that match, they went on to stage a remarkable recovery and won the match 5-4.
Pakistan’s remaining matches in Pool B will be against Canada and France. Meanwhile while the Pool A consists of Austria, Korea, New Zealand, Poland and South Africa.
The top two teams in the respective Pools will play in the semi-finals
Malaysian coach Sarjit Singh, recognising their tough opposition in their first match, said ‘Pakistan will be boosted after their performance at Sultan Azlan Shah Cup’.
Meanwhile, Green Shirts preparations for tournament in Holland have been hampered by visa issues where they had to scrap the match against the national Dutch team.

Easy money for the Kings at Cal Cup 52 while Thirsty Turtles prevail in a shootout for women’s title.
By Jawwad Qamar
Memorial Day at Cal Cup 52 witnessed two contrasting Super Division finals. In the women’s final, a tightly contested match between The Olympic Club and Thirsty Turtles remained scoreless until very late in the match. The Turtles scored first, on a penalty corner, in the 46th minute goal by Bibi Donraadt. After that the Olympic Club pulled their goalkeeper and got a tying field goal by Paulina Lee in the 50th minute to send the match to a shootout. The Turtles scored on all four of their shootout attempts and that was all they needed to win as Olympic Club tallied only 3 goals in their five attempts.
The men’s final saw the Kings from Simi Valley cruised to a 4-0 rout of defending champion and five times winners, LA Tigers, thanks to three spectacular goals from their Dutch import Miles Bukkens. Forward Bukkens scored two goals in the first half and one in the second. Welsh international James Carson was the other scorer for the Kings. The Kings also benefited from having the services of veteran Belgian Sebastian Dockier (Olympic gold 2020 and silver 2016, World Cup gold 2018 and silver 2023).
However, despite all the international help, it took a second round of sudden death shootout for the Kings to move past the local favorites, the Bulldogs in the first semifinal, early in the morning. After a very competitive scoreless tie in regulation and a 4-4 tie in shootout, both teams scored in the first round of sudden death shootout to make it 5-5. Then the Kings scored on their next shootout but the Bulldogs shot, on their attempt to tie, hit the post and that was the difference in the game.
In the other semifinal, LA Tiger prevailed over Yuba Brothers 2-1 thanks to the second tally in the closing minutes by England native Ross Gilham-Jones to break a 1-1 tie. German international Florian Sperling had leveled score in the first half for Yuba Brothers.
Founded by Tom Harris in 1972, the 52nd edition of one of the oldest and largest field hockey tournaments in the world, the Cal Cup, featured 127 teams, consisting of over 1,600 athletes competing in 12 divisions ranging from Under-8 to Men/Women Super Divisions.
In addition to $5,000 top prize in each Super Division, all players in the top three teams of each division received Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals.
The Super Division umpiring pool this year include three umpires that are heading to the Paris Olympics in July. They are Ayanna McClean (TTO), Sean Rapaport (RSA), and Gabriel Labate (ARG). Sean and Gabriel umpired the men’s final. Ayanna umpired the women’s final along with Ana Vazquez Escalante, an international umpire from Mexico.
