World rankings prevail as India, Netherlands and Belgium men enjoy convincing wins

Gorzelany triple lifts Leonas over Red Panthers

Results sided with World rankings down in Potchestfstroom, South Africa with convincing victories for the Netherlands and India. Harmanpreet Singh buried four goals from specialty plays to lift India 10-2 over the hosts, despite a gutsy opening half where South Africa only trailed 3-1. The Dutch were also kept at bay in their match up against the recently impressive French side and it wasn’t until the third quarter that their scoring cylinders started firing. Captain Thierry Brinkman’s composure in the circle put two goals to his name in the 5-1 victory, while teammates Jorrit Croon and Joep de Mol both celebrated their 100th internationals.

Men's Olympic bronze medallists India recovered from yesterday's surprise defeat to France by thrashing South Africa on their own turf in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League.

India show incisive touch to beat South Africa

The South Africans and Indians met today in Potchefstroom in their “return” fixture of the FIH Pro League. Following their 10-2 defeat in the first leg the South Africans were desperate to put up an improved performance against an India side smarting from their own defeat against France yesterday.

The South African men's hockey side lost again on Sunday in their FIH Pro League clash against India in Potchefstroom, going down 10-2.

India Pack Too Many Guns Against Fighting South Africa

It is never easy to regroup after a morale-pounding defeat, especially if it has to be back-to-back game. India exuded dollops of resilience putting aside the disappoinment of their 2-5 loss to France and carved out a 10-2 win over South Africa to round off their Pro Hockey League campaign in Potchefstroom on a bright note. The final scoreline hardly reflected the fight put up by the South Africans – the hosts were guilty of messing up several scoring opportunities, including a penalty stroke and who knows, the final outcome could have been a lot different if they had made their chances count.

After an evenly contested first quarter when the scores were tied 1-1, India completely dominated in the remaining three periods, pumping in nine goals against the hapless South Africans.

Potchefstroom (South Africa): Drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh scored four goals to help India demolish South Africa 10-2 and bounce back from their last outing defeat in style in the men's FIH Pro League hockey here on Sunday.

Indian hockey team’s lack of consistency and dipping intensity concern for coach Graham Reid

Indervir Grewal

Captain Manpreet Singh said missed chances cost India against France.

It was the two-minute break after the third quarter. India were leading 9-2 against South Africa. Yet chief coach Graham Reid was livid, blasting away at the Indian players for taking their foot off the pedal. “You are giving them oxygen. Let’s get our control back of the game. Stop playing casually. Run with your player,” Reid was heard telling his players.

Uninspiring Belgium Red Lions lose to Argentina

Disappointing performance from the proteges of Michel van den Heuvel who lacked the character to covet a 3rd success in the Pro League.

For their return to business in the Pro League, the Olympic champions had the firm intention of starting 2022 with a first victory against Argentina to erase their last disappointing performance against the Netherlands. But the Belgians were also well aware that this first duel of the year would not be easy to negotiate after the intensive training camp in Chile, against an opponent in great shape after the Pan American Games. The start of the match was nevertheless quite good but the last gesture was not precise enough to deceive the vigilance of the South American goalkeeper. However, in the 7th minute of play, it was the local team, via Agustin Bugallo, who took advantage of a little laxity and above all a marking error to deceive the vigilance of Loic Van Doren.

SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge

Northern KZN Regional Ferrum Hoërskool: Saturday 26 February

Finally, we can play! Ferrum Hoërskool’s First Hockey XI is excited to host the first tournament of the 2022 SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge 2022 on Saturday 26 February. Pictured here are the team’s Andiswa Mduli (Vice-Captain), Marlene Combrink (Captain) and Clarisse Whitehead (Vice-Captain), gearing up to welcome eight teams for the Northern KZN Regional. The first of the ten regionals for the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge kicks off on Saturday 26 February in Newcastle where Ferrum Hoërskool hosts eight teams for the Northern KZN Regional.

Ferrum looks forward to welcoming the teams from the northern parts of KZN onto their recently installed astro. The format for the day will see the schools divided into two pools, with the hosts heading up Pool A, taking on St Dominic’s, Newcastle High and the travelling Pongola High School. In Pool B, previous winner Sarel Cilliers, defending champs Pionier Hoërskool, Dundee High School and Vryheid High School

The first of 18 games, features host Ferrum, against the hard-working St Dominic’s team who made it to the 2020 regional final. The pool games are all 20 minutes one way running time, with a win earning four points, a draw with goals - two points, a goalless draw - one point and a loss zero points. At the conclusion of the pool games, all the teams meet in 20 minutes cross pool playoffs, followed by the semi-finals and then wrapping up the action-packed day with the regional final. Should any of the main games end with a tie, the result will move to a deciding penalty shootout.

Ferrum has dominated this area, having featured eight times at the nine Grand Finals. In 2016, Sarel Cilliers High School managed to topple Ferrum’s reign after a fantastic, well-crafted run in that regional. In an interrupted 2020, Pionier Hoërskool went all the way with a determined display on their turf, raising the trophy for the first time. They are currently the defending champs for this region.

The next regional, the PMB North Regional takes place at St Anne’s College on 5 March. All the KZN regional winners will head to St Mary’s D.S.G. for the Grand Finals in July.
