Fast start for favourites on day 1 of inaugural FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022

Spain and India came into the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022 as the two prohibitive favorites, and justified that status by putting on dominant displays in their contests against Ireland and Chile respectively, to take all 3 points in their opening encounters.

Ireland left chasing semi-final berth after opening loss

Ireland women suffered a 2-0 loss to favourites Spain in their opening match of the Women’s FIH Hockey Nations Cup this afternoon. Sean Dancer’s side were chasing the game almost from the outset as Spain started the game in electric fashion, winning a penalty corner inside two minutes and slotting home a slick drag flick past Elizabeth Murphy in goal.

Indian Women Make the Right Noises Against Chile in Tournament Opener

Chile were one of the surprise packets at the 2022 World Cup when they prevailed over Ireland and gave the mighty Netherlands a stiff resistance before going down 1-3, but any semblance of that ‘resoluteness’ was sorely missing when they locked horns with Olympic fourth-placed side India at Estadio Betero in Valencia. The Indian hockey eves made the right noises very early in the contest when vastly experienced Vandana Katariya weaved her way from the right and flicked it to Sangita Kumari, who first beat her marker Fernanda Villagran and subsequently Chilean goalkeeper Natalia Salvador to draw first blood.

What a sight! Rivalry of wife and husband teams in the Nehru Cup final!!

K. ARUMUGAM

Mighty Indian Railways fought hard and won the inaugural Sr Women’s Nehru Cup final over the Pritam Siwach Sports Foundation (PSSF) 2-1 on Saturday at the Shivaji Stadium in New Delhi. What of course caught the eyes were not only the intensity of the match which went down the wire, but also the coaches on the sidelines of both finalists. While Dronacharya awardee Pritam Siwach stood for the ultimate winners — she is chief coach of the Indian Railways for some years — whereas her husband Kuldeep Siwach, a former national player, did the same for the other team which is named after his wife’s name!
