Spain and New Zealand reign supreme in shoot-outs to seal quarterfinals spots



The first day of crossovers at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 produced drama aplenty as Spain and New Zealand sealed their quarterfinal berths with shoot-out wins, in the sudden death stage, against Malaysia and India respectively. Spain will now take on Australia in the quarterfinals, while New Zealand will face Belgium, with both matches to be played in Bhubaneswar. Malaysia and India head into the 9-16 classification matches, which will take place in Rourkela.

BHUBANESWAR: The Malaysian team had their chances for glory in the Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Hockey World Cup but failed to convert in the shoot-out and let the quarter-finals slip out of their hands at the Kalinga Stadium today.

Spain had all the possession, circle penetration and shots on goal, but in the end, it needed a penalty shootout to prevail against a resolute Malaysia to book its quarterfinal berth. Mario Garin, who watched the 2-2 draw from the bench, turned hero in the shootouts with two saves to give Spain a 4-3 win in the crossover here at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday.

India had the home advantage. They had the firepower. Their defence was set. India’s rivals, New Zealand, were ranked six places below them. The Kiwis had struggled so far, and were alive in the tournament only because of the crossover format.

It took 19 shots in the shootout and the sudden death to separate the two teams but in the end, the host was left ruing the multitude of what-ifs as it crashed out of the World Cup, going down 4-5 on penalties to New Zealand after being tied 3-3 in regulation time.
