Smooth sailing for Honamas while Korea win 10-goal thriller in the shoot-outs



The second day of crossovers at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 saw Germany and Korea seal their quarterfinal berths with wins over France and Argentina respectively. Germany will now take on England in the quarterfinals, while Korea will face Netherlands, with both matches to be played in Bhubaneswar. France and Argentina head into the 9-16 classification matches, which will take place in Rourkela.

Bhubaneswar — France endured a torrid afternoon in defence as efficient Germany set up a World Cup quarter-final clash against England with a cakewalk of a victory at the Kalinga Stadium.

Germany just needed a half to get the job done and book its place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup after dismantling France by a scoreline of 5-1 in the crossover stage match at the Kalinga Stadium.

Germany just needed a half to get the job done and book its place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. On Monday, a ruthless Germany dismantled France by a scoreline of 5-1 in the crossover stage match at the Kalinga Stadium.





Korea keeps Asian hopes alive with dramatic comeback win against Argentina

Hockey World Cup 2023: Having missed the previous edition and finishing 10th before that, Korea threw everything it had into the crossover match against Argentina and came out on top in penalty shootout.

Korea dug deep into its reserves to become the last and the lowest-ranked side to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a dramatic 3-2 shootout win in the crossover match against 2016 Olympic champion Argentina. The teams were tied 5-5 in regulation time in a game that saw honours constantly shifting before the Koreans prevailed to keep the Asian challenge alive in the competition.

Bhubaneswar — South Korea pulled off one of the great World Cup shocks on Monday night, beating Argentina 3-2 in a shoot-out after a thrill-fest 5-5 draw at the Kalinga Stadium.





Kookaburras wary but confident heading into Spain Quarter Final



The Kookaburras’ World Cup campaign continues tonight when Australia’s world number one ranked men’s hockey team take on Spain in the quarter finals in Bhubaneswar at 10pm AEDT.

The Host is in the Last Eight

New Zealand beat India in the second crossover match that ended in a 3-3 draw in Full Time, then came the penalty shoot outs in which India lost the game by  4-5 in the FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, 2023.

Now, India will face first to Japan for the last eight classification positions (from 9th to 16th).

Chartered accountant Leon Hayward, who plays hockey in ‘spare time’, knocks India out

Hayward, the chartered accountant from Auckland, who plays hockey in his ‘spare time’ made five saves out of eight penalties after the 3-3 draw in regulation time.

At nearly 20 minute-mark of the penalty shootout, Leon Hayward thwarted Shamsher Singh’s first attempt, pushed away the shot from a rebound and was scrambling across to throw his body as the Indian looked to have one last go. But the hooter went off and India was out in the crossovers. The cheers and whistles of 15,000-plus at the Kalinga Stadium were drowned out.

Bhubaneswar: On 22 January 2023, a week before the World Cup final will be played in Bhubaneswar, India crashed out of the 15th edition of the Men’s Hockey World Cup in the crossovers round. Graham Reid’s men fell short to the Vantage Black Sticks from New Zealand in a shootout after seeing out a 3-3 draw in regulation time.
