USWNT Rise Above Competition in Second Matchup of Series Keeping Canada Scoreless

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The U.S. Women’s National Team met Canada beneath the 83-degree heat of the Californian sun for the second match of a four-game capped series. The final match report recorded a score of USA 5, Canada 0.

The same intensity from the first match was in full force during the teams second meeting in 2016. Settling into a quick rhythm from the starting whistle, Michelle Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made an outlet pass at the center midfield line to Caitlin Van Sickle (Wilmington, Del.) who spotted Katie Reinprecht (Perkasie, Pa.) to break into the circle for a penalty corner in the 3rd minute. Although that chance was denied by Canada’s defensive wall, USA lit up the scoreboard in the 14th minute when Jill Witmer (Lancaster, Pa.) located Loren Shealy (Charlotte, N.C.) who dented the backboard with a clean shot from the center of the circle, turning the score USA 1, Canada 0. Canada quickly transitioned play into their attack to receive a penalty corner, but quick fly Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y. ) scooped up the ball before Canada could fire a shot. Kelsey Kolojejchick (Larksville, Pa.) struck hard to bury the ball into the left corner of the goal to make the score USA 2, Canada 0.

Shortly after in the 21st minute, USA attack pushed play into their offensive end to nicely setup Emily Wold (Freehold, N.J.) who secured the result. Following quickly after, K. Reinprecht capped off scoring in the second half with a high flick into the mesh at close range. In Team USA’s backfield, Witmer sprinted out of the defensive corner unit to steal the action away from Canada to keep them scoreless in the first 30 minutes of play. The halftime score closed with USA 4, Canada 0.

The USA would score one more time during today’s contest. Off of a penalty corner, Rachel Dawson's (Berlin, N.J.) direct hit glided past the Canada defense to up the score USA 5, Canada 0. When play did transition into the USA defense, USA goalkeeper Jackie Briggs (Robesonia, Pa.) came up with a huge glove save to keep Canada at zero and shutting down another Canada advance. A steady attack presence continued through the second half of the game. Stretching the pitch and utilizing the depth, Team USA tested the Canadian backfield on several long runs into the offensive end. The impressive attack presence remained a constant until the conclusion of the 60 minutes to secure a final corner opportunity that was missed. The final report stood USA 5, Canada 0.

“Back-to-back games for us are important part of this week,” said Craig Parnham, USWNT Head Coach. “It gives us that physical challenge, certainly in that latter part of the game. Canada defended stoutly toward the end of the game and I was pleased that we were able to keep our tempo and energy high. It’s a testament of the work that’s done everyday preparing for the games.”

The series continues with the USWNT competing against Canada Thursday at 12:30 p.m. PST. Follow live match updates by following @USAFieldHockey on Twitter.

Haughn becomes youngest player to reach 100 caps; Canada drops second to U.S.

Women’s National Team forward Hannah Haughn made Canadian field hockey history Tuesday when she stepped onto the field in California becoming the youngest Canadian woman on record to reach 100 senior international games played for Canada.

At 21.43 years old, Haughn passes current teammate Abigail Raye, who previously held the record for the youngest women’s player to reach 100 games (at 22.95 years).

The four youngest Canadian women’s players on record to reach 100 caps are all active members of the Women’s National Team. In addition to Haughn and Raye, Danielle Hennig and Kate Gillis reached the milestone at 24.57 and 24.71 years respectively. Rounding out the top five is Sue Tingley, who reached the mark at 25.03 years.

North Vancouver’s Haughn reached the mark in a 5-0 loss to the United States on Tuesday in Chula Vista, California. Canada was playing in the second game of a four-game test series with the seventh ranked U.S. It is the team’s first competition of 2016 and the first time they have hit the field since capturing a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto last summer.

Haughn made her senior international debut for Canada in 2011, a year in which she was the youngest member of the Canadian women’s team that competed at the Pan American Games in Mexico. She has since represented Canada at the Commonwealth Games and another Pan Am Games and looks to be a part of the team that attempts to qualify for the 2018 Women’s World Cup and 2020 Olympic Games.

After opening the test series with the U.S. with an 8-1 loss, with Haughn scoring Canada’s lone goal, the Canadians put in a better performance on Tuesday. Despite the improved play, they were not able to beat U.S. keeper Jackie Briggs who stood tall when Canada was at its most dangerous.

Of note for the Canadian, defender Alexis de Armond made her senior international debut for Canada. She is one of three players who made their senior debut this series.

The Canadian women will look to bounce back from Tuesday’s loss to the U.S. when they face their North American rival again Thursday at 12:30pm PT/3:30pm ET. The final match of the series is scheduled for the same time on Friday.

Coach Rehan takes field as Pakistan fall one man short

Harpreet Kaur Lamba

Former Pakistan hockey star Rehan Butt’s first assignment as a coach took an unusual turn on Sunday. In Guwahati to take part in the South Asian Games, Butt was gearing up to guide the young Pakistan squad in the 12-day event when one of their players, Samiullah, failed to get the Non Validate Pass (visa) for the Games.

The team were left with no option but to ask Rehan to don the national colours yet again and the former skipper duly obliged. On Sunday, he played a vital part in the team’s 3-0 win over Sri Lanka.

"It has been quite a start to my coaching career!" said Rehan in a conversation with this newspaper from Guwahati. "It was an emotional moment for me as I reached India and suddenly was asked to play. We spent so much time training the squad last one month but I never thought that I would be playing too! It was surreal to be in the field and wear the jersey again," said Rehan, who last played for Pakistan at the 2012 London Games.

Butt, along with the likes of former skippers Waseem Ahmed, Mohammad Saqlain and world fame drag-flicker Sohail Abbas, have been the face of Pakistan hockey in the last decade that saw then beat top teams consistently. The four-time world champions were a formidable lot under current India coach Roelant Oltmans, who coached Pakistan from 2003 to 2008.

But the last few years has seen a sharp decline in the country’s hockey. The internal politics was to be blamed and the refusal of international teams - across all sport - to travel to Pakistan due to safety concerns added to it. The low came in 2014 when the former champions missed out on the World Cup for the first time and will also not be seen in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Pakistan has finished seventh at the London Games.

Rehan says the country is trying to recover from this "dark period".

"We have seen a lot of downfall and despair but hopefully the only way will be up from here. It was a real heartbreak to see the team not being represented at the World Cup and now the Olympics too. Pakistan hockey is capable of a lot more and we have to come out of this," says the star, who was once one of the most feared striker in world hockey.

"Recently a lot has changed in terms of administration and The target is to groom the new talent and take slow and steady steps. We are aiming for the 2018 World Cup now and the South Asian Games is the first step. A gold here shall be a good start for this build-up," the 35-year-old said.

Dabang Mumbai H.C. storm ahead defeating Delhi Waveriders 8-3

9th February, 2016, New Delhi: Delhi Waveriders witnessed another defeat today on their home turf playing against Dabang Mumbai H.C. at the Shivaji Stadium, New Delhi. Dabang Mumbai H.C. who came from behind to score four back to back field goals in the final quarter after trailing 3-0 for the first three quarters helped the visitors seal their third consecutive victory defeating Delhi Waveriders 8-3 in the 4th Coal India Hockey India League.

With this win Dabang Mumbai H.C. now jump to the fourth place in the 4th Coal India Hockey India League points table with 19 points from seven games so far, while Delhi Waveriders dropped to the bottom of the table with 17 points to their kitty.

The match began with Delhi Waveriders pressing hard to score. The hosts, who had lost three matches in a row started their campaign today with a clear intention to win. Their pressing game along with a strong defence line of Dabang Mumbai H.C. made the game extremely competitive and exciting. Forwards from both sides showcased top class hockey along with some crucial saves from goalkeepers on both ends of the field.

Dabang Mumbai H.C. however played with more control and managed some good moves on Delhi’s side but were unable to break through the defence deadlock of the hosts. The goal less first quarter saw many unsuccessful attempts to score from both the teams. The second quarter began with both the teams trying to take control of the game, but it were the hosts, Delhi Waveriders who found the gap to score their first field goal of the day through Steven Edwards in the 22nd minute, taking the much needed 2-0 lead in the game. The rest of the second quarter saw Delhi Waveriders playing an attacking game with an occasional counter attack from Dabang Mumbai H.C. but the defenders on both sides ensured no further goal conversions for either of the teams.

The second half began with Dabang Mumbai H.C. taking charge of the game and they started pressing hard on Delhi Waveriders, but were still unsuccessful to break Delhi’s defensive deadlock. Delhi Waveriders who were trying hard to capitalise on their lead were rewarded with a penalty corner in the 39th minute which was duly converted by Rupinder Pal Singh to give the hosts a much needed 3-0 lead in the game. The third quarter came to an end with Delhi Waveriders having a 3-0 lead over Dabang Mumbai H.C.

The fourth quarter began on a similar note with the hosts still hungry for more goals, but Dabang Mumbai H.C. had different plans and all their hard work finally showed the result through a beautiful field goal off Danish Mujtaba’s stick in the 49th minute, giving the visitors a comeback chance in the game. The score board now stood at 2-3 still in favour of Delhi Waveriders. Dabang Mumbai H.C. got a fresh breath of life through this goal and pressed harder to score.

Their efforts saw results as Dabang Mumbai H.C. scored their second goal of the day within three minutes through Nilkanta Sharma, taking a lead of 4-3 at a very critical moment of the game. This goal from Dabang Mumbai H.C. changed the perspective of the game as the visitors hunted in packs destroying Delhi’s defensive line, as they sealed the match in their favour through Manpreet who scored two successive field goals in the 57th and 58th minute respectively. The match ended with Dabang Mumbai H.C. winning the match 8-3 against Delhi Waveriders.

Jay Stacy: We were never out of the race

K. Arumugam

"We were never out of the race", said emphatically the beaming Australian-import coach of Dabang Mumbai after his team bulldozed home team Delhi Waveriders.

The loaded question was posed to him after today's entertaining encounter, against the backdrop of four consecutive loses the team had suffered in the beginning.

"We knew we will do better. Yes, we lost in the first phase, but at the same time all the parameters were falling in line, we were asserting, holding sway on the turf. Results did not come, but since we were doing well, and lost some matches closely, we were sure we will do better in the coming matches, today is one such", the former Australian Olympic medallist, said.

Dabang Mumbai, playing a match away, lost the first four encouters. It created an impression that the Mumbai team is jinxed since it did not qualify for the last three editions too.

Today also the team did not show any symptoms of great victory (3-8) as it trailed by a field goal and a penalty corner goal till the tend of third quarter.

Thereafter, the team inflicted four sharp field goals, reflected as 8 on the scoreboard, to romp home a famous victory.

This is the second biggest victory in the fourth Hockey India League after 2-10 number which Kalinga posted on hapless Uttar Pradesh Wizards.

The four field goals stunned not only the home crowd, but also the careful watchers.

Stay is a penalty corner expert in his hey days, and it was naturally expected his team will bang on penalty corner to come out of crucial matches. However, Dabang Mumbai on the contrary is one of the poorest performers on this count.

When he was asked whether the team's inability to convert any of the eight penalty corners in to goal int he first match had impacted his game plan, he said emphatic no.

"No, not at all. We still accord importance to penalty corners, and are getting it too. We go as the rival pose the challenge, and our ability to press in the circle. There is no boardroom effort to diminish the value of the penalty corner". With the 8-3 victory today, the visiting team that had dropped to bottom of the table since the HOckey India League started mid way through last month, rose to fourth position, pushing UP wizards to fifth and today's host Delhi Waveriders to bottom.

Manpreet the star as Mumbai thrash Delhi

Harpreet Kaur Lamba

Dabang Mumbai came up with a scintillating show, scoring four field goals in the final quarter to stun former champions Delhi Waveriders 8-3 in a round-robin match of the Hockey India League Season Four match here on Tuesday evening.
Young Manpreet was the hero, scoring two goals, along with sparkling efforts from upcoming star

Nilakanta Sharma and India midfielder Danish Mujtaba, as Mumbai showed class, composure and gumption.

Having played an ultra-defensive game in the first three quarters where they trailed 0-3 with Delhi

controlling the pace of the game, Matthew Swann-led Mumbai switched their tactics in the final quarter to turn the match on its head.

Their sudden shift to attack and effortless runs from the flanks threw Delhi off balance and has also put question marks on the hosts’ chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.

Leading 3-0 after three quarters following a field goal from Steven Edwards and drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh, Delhi seemed well on their way to victory having dominated most of the game. Mumbai, till then, had only one penalty corner to show against their name having played a withdrawn, lacklustre game.

The visitors through smelled a chance when Mujtaba pulled one back in the 49th minute (2-3) and what emerged was a team with self-belief and energy. Barely had Delhi settled down, when the sprightly Nilkanta put Mumbai ahead tapping in a high ball past Delhi goalkeeper Devon Manchester (4-3).

Mumbai then took their game up several notches, and for once Delhi had no answers. Home coach Cedric D’Souza threw back his players but Mumbai forwards were unstoppable and found gaps with ease.

Man of the match Manpreet pulled off two brilliant goals (57th, 58th) to take his team to an exciting 8-3 finish as the crowd watched in disbelief.

Mumbai, who were static at the bottom of the points table since the beginning of this season, thus leapfrogged to fourth place (19 points) ahead of Uttar Pradesh (18) and Delhi (17).

The hosts, who have not missed out on a last four berth in the last three seasons, will have to regroup quickly ahead of their next home match against table toppers Ranchi Rays on Thursday.

Mumbai steamrollers Delhi

Nine minutes was all it took for Dabang Mumbai to leapfrog from bottom of the table into semifinal contention after registering a comprehensive 8-3 victory against Delhi Waveriders in the Hockey India League at the Shivaji Stadium here on Tuesday. It was its third consecutive win of the competition.

The host, with its third defeat on the trot at home and with 17 points and just two more games remaining, is all but out of the race for the semifinals barring some exceptional performance and favourable permutations from other teams.

Given the way its defence collapsed in the last 10 minutes on Tuesday, however, that appears unlikely.

That was, in fact, the only period of any excitement in the match. For a major part, the game was confined to the midfield with few scoring opportunities and fewer attempts at breaking the deadlock.

Close marking by the teams also meant there was little room to manoeuvre for the players. After a barren first quarter, Steven Edwards made the most of goalmouth melee to put Delhi ahead in the 22nd minute.

Rupinder Pal Singh converted the team’s second penalty corner to increase the lead in the 39th minute. But there was no concerted attempt from either side to add momentum to the game that appeared to be meandering away to a tame end before Danish Mujtaba perked up the proceedings and opened up the floodgates.

Receiving the ball on the move from Vikas Sharma on the right, Mujtaba shot in from the top of the striking circle in the 49th minute to reduce the margin moments after Mumbai’s only penalty corner went waste.

Three minutes later, Affan Yousuf put Nilakanta Sharma through and the latter struck from in front of the goal to put Mumbai ahead.

That appeared to stun Delhi, which went on the defensive, but there was no structure as the host perhaps realised the game was slipping away. Desperately throwing everything into the defence did not help and despite almost five defenders in the circle, a brilliant Gurjant Singh managed to lift pass them all to unselfishly send the ball to Andrew Philpott, whose backward pass found Manpreet perfectly positioned to sound the board.

With the scoreline 6-3 for Mumbai, Delhi changed its goalkeeper as a last-ditch attempt to contain the damage and ended up conceding another field goal a minute later, again by Manpreet as Harjot Singh hardly got time to settle down before it was all over.

The result: Dabang Mumbai 8 (Manpreet 4, Gurmail Singh 2, Nilakanta Sharma 2) bt Delhi Waveriders (Steven Edwards 2, Rupinder Pal Singh (PC)).

Dabang Mumbai rally to crush Delhi Waveriders 8-3 in thrilling HIL match

Dabang Mumbai rally to crush Delhi Waveriders 8-3 in thrilling HIL match

NEW DELHI: Mumbai lads finally proved as why their team named Dabang Mumbai as the visitors staged a remarkable comeback in the final 10 minutes of the game - down with a deficit of three goals until third quarter - to turn the tables on their opponents and register a crushing 8-3 victory over Delhi Waveriders in the league match of the Hockey India League (HIL) played at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

With the third victory on the trot, Mumbai moved to fourth place in the standings with 19 points while Delhi, who lost their fourth successive match and their third on home turf, is the bottom-ranked team among the six teams with 17 points in their kitty and with only two matches left in the competition, their chances of making into the semis look very bleak.

Danish Mujtaba (49' FG), Nilakanta Sharma (52' FG), and Manpreet (57' FG, 58'FG) scored for the winners while Steven Edwards (22' FG) and Rupinder Pal Singh (39' PC) struck for the losing side.

Delhi boys, who looked a different bunch altogether today, dished out an attacking brand of hockey right from the word go but they somehow lost the plot late in the fourth and final quarter after holding on a good 3-0 lead against the visitors. Delhi might have lost due to their overconfidence as everything was going well in their favour until those superb three field goals in the span of exactly nine minutes undone their hard work and put them in another miserable position.

Steven Edwards opened the account for Delhi with a brilliant field goal in the 22nd minute after an exciting first quarter couldn't produce a single goal from both the sides despite having created numerous chances. Delhi went into the lemon-break with a healthy 2-0 lead.

On changing ends, Delhi players look even more menacing when it comes to play attacking style of game as Rupinder Pal Singh, who has scored maximum 9 goals via PC so far in the fourth edition, extended Delhi's lead to 3-0 with his trademark drag-flick. Mumbai players were also getting opportunities to score but they stuttered at the goalmouth on quite a few occasions.

The fourth and decisive quarter of the match came out with a surprise for everyone, from experts to fans, as everybody on the ground was somewhat sure of Delhi's victory by then but seasoned Danish Mujtaba came up with a clever deflection inside the striking circle to reduce the Mumbai team's lead to 2-3 in the 49th minute and three minutes later young Nilakanta Sharma scored a fine field goal which stunned many to give Mumbai team a crucial 4-3 lead.

The second strike provided Mumbai team much-needed adrenaline as they were running up and down to create more pressure on their rivals and their efforts reaped benefits too after Manpreet Singh came up with back-to-back goals in the dying moments of the game to seal the final nail in the coffin.

Coal India Hockey India League: Week 3 Round-up

Ranchi Rays continue to shine in HIL

A big crowd took in the Kalinga Lancers v Dabang Mumbai game (Photo: Coal India Hockey India League)

In week three of the Coal India Hockey India League, Ranchi Rays bounced back from a surprise mid-week defeat against Dabang Mumbai to claim a crucial victory against high-flying rivals Kalinga Lancers to tighten their grip at the top of the table.

On Wednesday (3 February), Dabang Mumbai took their first win of the competition with a 7-5 victory over the Rays, with Germany striker Florian Fuchs netting what proved to be the winning goal in the 48th minute.

It was a result that few expected and looked even more unlikely when Dabang were permanently reduced to ten players following Affan Yousuf’s 30th minute dismissal.

Ranchi’s defeat was certainly not ideal preparation for Monday’s top-of-the-table away clash against the Lancers, who went into the match level on points with the Rays but, like their opponents, had also suffered a loss in their most recent contest, going down 4-1 at home against Jaypee Punjab Warriors.

Ranchi fell behind in the ninth minute when Dharamvir Singh scored a field goal - which count double in this year’s HIL - to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead, before Rays’ captain Ashley Jackson continued his sparkling form with a 10th minute penalty corner to make the score 2-1.

The Rays had to wait until the fourth quarter before grabbing the winner, with Mohd Amir Khan firing home from open play to give Ranchi a 3-2 victory and open up a four point lead over the Lancers, who have played a game more, at the top of the table.

Third place in the Coal India Hockey India League table is currently occupied by Jaypee Punjab Warriors. As well as their victory against the Lancers, the Warriors also claimed a 5-2 triumph at Delhi Waveriders (fifth place) before falling to a 3-0 defeat on home turf against the fourth ranked Uttar Pradesh Wizards.

Dabang Mumbai are still at the bottom of the standings, but successive victories over Ranchi Rays and Uttar Pradesh Wizards (2-1) suggest that they have found form and will be looking for a rapid climb up the league table with the aim of securing an all-important top four finish and a subsequent place in the competition semi-finals.

The race to finish top of the scoring chart is currently being lead by Aussie goal-machine Glenn Turner (Kalinga Lancers) with 15. Turner, Jackson and Fuchs have each scored eight times in the competition, but Turner’s six field goals give him a clear advantage over his rivals.
