Germany crowned World Champions at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023



The final day of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 was played in the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar as Germany were crowned the champions of the world, defeating the defending champions Belgium in a thrilling finals, where they went down by 2 goals early in the first quarter but fought their way back again and took the game into a shoot-out, where they held their nerves in the sudden deaths, winning 5-4. With the win Germany also claimed the top spot in the FIH Men’s World Outdoor Rankings.

Germany have dethroned reigning champions Belgium in the Men's Hockey World Cup after producing a comeback victory in the final in Bhubaneswar.

Germany managed to achieve what Netherlands could not in 2018 and Australia could not in 2021 — beat Belgium in the shootout of a major final.

Germany overturned a 2-0 deficit before defeating Belgium in a penalty shootout. Netherlands defeated Australia 3-1 in the 3rd place playoff.

Germany rode its momentum and belief on Sunday, prevailing in the shootouts for the second time in three games, to lift its third world title here with a 5-4 win in sudden death against defending champion Belgium after the teams were tied 3-3 in regulation time.





Germany crowned champions after scripting comeback against Belgium in final

The two sides were locked 3-3 at the end of regulation time of the thrilling final before Germany eventually won 5-4 in sudden death in front of a packed Kalinga Stadium.


This was the third time in the tournament that Germany had won after trailing 0-2 and their mental strength and never-say-die attitude came to the fore again as they denied the Belgians to defend their title. Twitter @TheHockeyIndia

After the painful semifinal defeat, the young Netherlands side overpowered Australia in a 3-1 win to seal a World Cup bronze medal. Having gone a goal down here in the opening half at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday, the young side recovered to show they wanted it more. “We are a young team and we want something. You really need to show in these kind of games,” Jorrit Croon, the Dutch attacking midfielder said after the game.

The Black Sticks have dropped a place to 10th in the world men’s hockey rankings despite finishing seventh at the just-completed World Cup in India.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The 2023 Sunshine Showcase, presented by Team IP, saw an action packed three days at the at ESPN Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World Resort. Although weather forced a slight delay on the final day, the teams competed for medals in all age division Flights and the atmosphere was magical throughout the entire showcase for all to enjoy. The 2022 event also marked the most teams ever competing at the annual Disney event with 199 teams.
